About

THE LAST SHIP is a new musical with an original score by 16-time Grammy Award® winner Sting. Inspired by Sting’s own childhood experiences, this World Premiere production features direction by two-time Tony Award® winner Joe Mantello (Wicked), a book by Tony Award® winner John Logan(Red) and Pulitzer Prize winner Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal), and choreography by Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett (Once). THE LAST SHIP is set in the English seafaring town of Wallsend, a close-knit community where life has always revolved around the local shipyard and the hardworking men who construct magnificent vessels with tremendous pride. It is a portrait of a community so bound together by passion, faith and tradition, they'll stop at nothing to preserve the only life they've ever known.

    You won't be disappointed!

by Mg415 on 1/27/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

Generally speaking, I really liked the play, especially Act I. I enjoyed the choreography of the group; in particular, the subtle use of slo-mo dancing. Sting was fabulous and nicely blended in with the other players. My compliments to the other players as well. On the other hand, I felt that Act II was too long..too dragged out. I believe that some of the scenes could have been omitted or streamed down, for example, the scenes with and about the priest could have been handled with a mention by one of the other characters. Oh, I almost forgot....where was the big ship at the end of the narrow street??? I missed seeing it.

    Great Show

by ssd6 on 1/27/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

This is the third time I am seeing this show - that is how amazing it is. Unfortunately, this was the closing & so hard to understand. The music & the story are amazing. If this show tours regionally or is revived in the future, run don't walk to see it!

    The Last Ship

by StingFanfordecades on 1/27/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

My wife and I are big Sting music fans, and his play the last ship did not disappoint at all. The music and performances were excellent and the style was unique for a Broadway play.Unfortunately we cannot recommend it to other playgoers as the show has now closed in only 3 months due to slow ticket sales. In our view there is no explanation, except that it is very unique and not at all like most campy flamboyant remakes that are populating most NYC theaters these days. Hopefully the show will go into licensing in either London or a road tour so the wonderful production can be seen by more audiences in different cities.

    I would see it again!

by LadySadieGrace on 1/27/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

This musical was unbelievable! Great storyline, fantastic songs and outstanding actors. I think the only reason it left is because it is an original. It seems everything else on broadway is or was a movie. This was an original piece of art.

    Passionate Performance

by annieowl on 1/27/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

Great Singing & Acting and music. Interesting choreography especially when Meg (female lead) slides down fellow actors back -loved this part with the contact choreography. The 1st Act was tighter as far as the story and action. Music and acting commitment was strong and great throughout the musical. However, it's a few moments for 2nd Act that break the story momentum so they have an extra male dance number that probably should be more personal male story line entwined instead.. The priest is fantastic and important part of the show; he's carrying a lot of the second act story. The cast is truly fantastic and you always feel their heart brings you on the Journey of the Last Ship!!! I am so Happy I got to experience this show. THANK You.

    The Last Ship was stunning!

by TheaRR on 1/27/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

What a stunning performance. Amazing cast and a show with such integrity, passion, heart and poetry. Great songs by Sting. The set was perfect for this show and added to the excitement. Not fair this was the final performance, Sting gave a beautiful and heartfelt curtain speech, Saw it 4 times wish it had been more. Cheers to all involved.

by Pandy14 on 1/27/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

Sting's "The Last Ship" was a haunting story buoyed by a mesmerizing score. It's a shame that more people didn't discover this musical, before it was forced to close....

    The Last Ship

by Broadwaybound1 on 1/27/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I really enjoyed the show and thought the score and songs were excellent! The cast was very good as well and would definitely recommend it to anyone who can appreciate a quality musical without all the fluff and pomp of fancy costumes and elaborate sets. I was surprised and disappointed to hear it was closing and hope it will play in other venues.

    Last Ship should stay afloat

by GillianChristina on 1/27/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

The Last Ship was a brilliant show with lovely music and top rate performances. It was very moving, and how many times does a musical really get to you? Every song was a winner, the stage design was very dramatic and the finale with the ship "sailing" off into the ocean was amazing and brilliantly conceived and carried out. It's hard to imagine why the show has had to close when it is of such top quality, but perhaps it needed a tighter story line and the pace could have been faster (eg. the hospital scene of the dying priest could stand to have been cut or considerably shortened - it wasn't credible to have someone dying of lung cancer singing a long song although I guess Mimi has been doing it for years!). And finally - where was the ship going?!!

    It's beyond me

by BillfromMA on 1/27/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

why this show was not a hit! Guess it just goes to show the low intelligence level of most theatregoers to musicals. It is a shame that this show and Side Show could not make it this year. Two beautifully staged shows and great music. Both flops. But Momma Mia rolls on.
