One of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s finest works, THE KING AND I boasts a score which features such beloved classics as “Getting To Know You,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Hello Young Lovers,” “Shall We Dance” and “Something Wonderful.” Set in 1860’s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children.

Don't get me wrong, everyone performed admirably. However, I was underwhelmed by the performances with the main two characters, Anna, and the King of Siam - the two characters which make this a classical story, which I have fond memories of as a child, which is why I bought the tickets. Maybe I don't understand how roles are assigned in theatre, but I had a hard time seeing how the performers chosen for Anna and the King resembled the characters in the movie, in any way shape or form, outside of them being able to sing and dance. Everything else was off. In the movie, Anna was more graceful, and the King was more intriguing, appealing in how he carried himself, and MUCH more masculine. If it wasn't for the supporting cast, particularly the performer who played Tuptim, I'm afraid this show would have been a complete disappointment.
Cast was so talented, voices extraordinary. Funny, sad just marvelous
It was often impossible to understand what they were saying/singing, especially the boy playing Louis
We loved The King and I!! All the singers were on point! The stage designs were awesome too!! I would highly recommend seeing this, if it’s in your area!!
Awsome—great preformance—beautiful singing—actors were fantastic
The main actors (teacher, king and prince), especially the king were not good. The two secondary actors (the wife from Burma and her lover) were actually the best ones. I would not go watch it again or recommend it to anyone...
My adult daughter and i went to see this and we were blown away. The voices of the singers were beautiful! We wish we could see it again.
The performance was excellent. My only issue was with the behavior of people who sat in front of me with teo children sitting on there laps. They ruined the experience. It got to be so bad that the couple sitting next to them left after the first act. I was not aware a theater would allow people to bring children in , not pay for separate seats and allow them to ait on laps snd stand up throughout most of the first act.
The seats were excellent, the performance was magnificent and as also the staff at the Duke Energy Performing Arts Center was great.Couldn't have asked for a better night!
It was great!! We really enjoyed it. I hope that we can see more plays in the future.
Very entertaining and love the music. One of my favorite musicals. A must see.
The production of The King and I was wonderful! The voices of the entire cast were just beautiful! Really enjoyed our evening in “Siam”!
Talented cast, vocals did not disappoint, wardrobe awesome stage and lighting perfect. Truly impressive show great evening. I have been to shows in New York and Chicago. Wonderful to experience equal performance in smaller city.
The young lady who played the part of the slave girl had a magnificent voice. The lead lady was good but often did not project her speaking voice well. Too much time taken dancing for me. I have seen THe King and I before but this was not my favorite production.
Cast sings beautifully but the overall show is missing the MAGIC and the emotions of the play. The costumes are nice and the set is functional. Mark it as a B.
Nice performance, beautiful singing, wasn’t sure the scene about Tom’s cabin was never going to end, found that to be a little boring. Overall good but would not see again.
Wonderful production! Vocals; costumes;scenery exceptional!
The show was fantastic, loved all the actors and the sets. If it ever comes through again I'll definitely get tickets. Clowes Memorial was wonderful too, clean and easy to get around and the box seats were actually fantastic. As long as you put your seat up near the concrete, you can see everything perfectly.
Don't miss this wonderful revival of one of the best musicals in the great, old tradition of Broadway shows. It is delightful! The music makes your heart sing. The production is a great vehicle to launch female singing careers as the best of songs are given to the women. The company of women in this tour are more than adequate, powerful & outstanding. They do not disappoint. Don't walk...run to get tickets!
