About

See what Time Magazine exclaims is, “A don’t miss theatre event!  The #1 Broadway musical of the year.”  Winner of the 2012 TONY AWARD® FOR BEST REVIVAL OF A MUSICAL, The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess is hitting the road with award-winning members of the Broadway cast in this stunning and stirring new staging. Accompanied by a lush 23-piece orchestra, this re-envisioned Broadway production includes such legendary songs as “Summertime,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” and “I Got Plenty of Nothing.”

Praised by the New Yorker as, “A great achievement!” and hailed by the Associated Press as, “a Gorgeous version of the Gershwin masterpiece,” The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess is coming to you from its record-breaking engagements at the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University and Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre.   One of Broadway’s most accomplished creative teams, led by Tony Award® -winning director Diane Paulus (Pippin, Hair), Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks (Topdog/Underdog), and two-time Obie Award-winning composer Diedre L. Murray (Running Man), have re-imagined George Gershwin, DuBose and Dorothy Heyward and Ira Gershwin’s legendary masterwork specifically for the musical theatre, what USA Today calls “a canny and exuberant re-affirmation of the original’s enduring brilliance.”

  • Porgy and Bess

Fabulous event. This was the first time I have seen this opera live. I could never understand it when I saw it on television. I brought my teenage nieces and nephew who really enjoyed it also. The singing was perfect and the actors movement on stage was great. Minimal props still tell the story.

This was a terrific performance. It's wonderful to see this work in different versions (the opera and this musical).

The performers were great, but the variations from the original music were not as pleasing

  • Porgy & Bess is Great

Porgy & Bess is awesome. A Classic Musical. A Must See. The changes of the script in the opening scene and the use of profanity was unnecessary. But overall it was Outstanding.

First class performance! Moving and entertaining. Also loved the full orchestra. Their musicianship truly added to the performance.

  • Great Show and Excellent Performance

This was an outstanding touring company performance. The actors were excellent, with beautiful voices. It was a very professional production, which my wife and I enjoyed tremendously.

  • Staging

    by mnrt1012 on 3/10/14Detroit Opera House - DetroitRating: 3 out of 5

I was not impressed by the "one-set-fits-all-scenes" staging. All of the moving of chairs and crates was distracting.

  • Porgy and Bess

by Gmdexter on 3/10/14Detroit Opera House - DetroitRating: 2 out of 5

I was very disappointed by this production of Porgy and Bess. The staging was ok However the acting especially in some of group numbers was poorly done, very amateurish. The voices of the actors were very good. The classic numbers except for 'Summertime' were underplayed.

I prefer the original Porgy and Bess with memorable songs and understandable dialog. I thought the music lacked melodic qualities and I couldn't understand the words. Overall I was disappointed.

The talent was first class, vocally, acting and dancing. The show kept us engaged throughout. Choreography was not difficult, but it was very appropriate, enjoyable, and well-rehearsed.
