    What a Revival!

by Loving60s on 9/24/12Richard Rodgers Theatre - New York

The house was packed and the audience hushed as the orchestra began and the curtains lifted... Porgy & Bess! A beloved musical was once again living on stage in all its glory... and glorious it was! It was apparent the cast "felt" their roles on stage as they presented extraordinary performances. It was a thrilling experience!

    The Gershwin's Porgy and Bess

by Leonwatcher on 9/22/12Richard Rodgers Theatre - New York

This remains one of the great American musical theater pieces, even in an adaptation that was less than stellar. Norm Lewis as Porgy is the find of this show. He is poignant and moving as the title role. Audra McDonald is a great singer, but her part seems abridged. Although I understand the push to a more contemporary adaptation, wish they emphasized the operatic qualities more.

Porgy and Bess is an amazing-must-see Broadway Masterpiece! The story is a timeless American classic with an African American cast. This time around the cast was unforgettable! Audra is in a class by herself! The story is compelling! The music will replay in your mind over and over again! If you love Broadway, you must see Porgy and Bess!

    The Best

by Dan208 on 9/22/12Richard Rodgers Theatre - New York

It's too bad there are only five stars -- I'd give this more! "Porgy" has a leg up on other musicals: every song is a standard, a classic. This "Porgy" has two great voices -- Audra MacDonald and Norm Lewis. The minor characters' voices are also terrific. The sets are beautiful, the choreography is stunning. I've seen the opera version of "Porgy." The people who put this "Porgy" together have shown that it works wonderfully as a musical. I hope they filmed this production. It was magnificent.

    I will NEVER forget it!

by Chanteuse52 on 9/22/12Richard Rodgers Theatre - New York

This was an absolutely spectacular show from start to finish. The cast was talented. The voices were incredible, but the acting set this production apart from another production I saw years ago. Unlike many other shows I have seen over 30 years, the songs are not separate from the story and the actors bring out the emotional content of the story as they sing. I loved this production so much that I returned to see it 4 weeks after I originally saw It, and thought it was even better at the second show. (I have seen some shows more than once in the past, but never in such quick succession.). Audra McDonald is a treasure....she SO deserved the Tony for her performance.

    Saw it 3 times!

by piggypoo on 9/21/12Richard Rodgers Theatre - New York

Absolutely loved this contemporized-a-bit classic! Went to see it three times, and would have gone again had it played longer...very sorry to hear it closing. Audra was spectacular as Bess - even unforgettable! Very powerful. A story near and dear to my heart.

Porgy and Bess was beyond awesome

by fiekcine on 9/21/12Richard Rodgers Theatre - New York

I am so thankful I saw Porgy and Bess before it closed. It was truly amazing. Every actor in every part was perfect. I don't know how they perform with that much gut wrenching emotion day in and day out.

    WOW!! What a delight!

by Pawlet18 on 9/21/12Richard Rodgers Theatre - New York

Wonderful! I especially liked the interpretation, by the actors, of Gershwin's Lyrics! Audra McDonald was very convincing as Bess, you really feel for her character and want to help her out of a bad situation as Porgy does. It is always a pleasure to hear her sing. My heart went out to Norm Lewis who plays Porgy because he had to hold his leg in such an ackward position for so long, something most people couldn't do. He did an amazing job and made the audience fall in love with his character. And then there was Carmen Ruby Floyd who played Mariah, her portrayal of this character made you sit up and take notice of Mariah. She nailed her role hands down. The entire cast did a great job and the students sitting next to me that were from Baltimore, MD agreed as well!!! Kudos to their teachers for exposing them to this classic American Operetta.

    Porgy and Bess

by Jewel21 on 9/21/12Richard Rodgers Theatre - New York

There are words to say but I am just so speechless. Porgy and Bess singing to each other confessing their love was just too much for me (crying like a baby).

Porgy and Bess lived up to highest expectations!

by KDivaSpad on 9/20/12Richard Rodgers Theatre - New York

I'm so glad I finally found the time to see this true American masterpiece before it closes forever! Audra was beyond amazing, the entire ensemble was superb, the directing was daring and realistic. Everyone must be exhausted after each show. I can't imagine 2 shows a day!! This is a major musical requirement for everyone.

    Breathtakingly Powerful

by OPA118 on 9/20/12Richard Rodgers Theatre - New York

From start to finish all the actors were superbly in character and the music was excellent. I am more a Gershwin fan today than I have ever been. This was a great present to my husband. He absolutely loved every minute of it. Audra McDonald has more Tonys in her future than she is aware of.
