    Porgy and Bess

The show was phenomenal! I brought my niece, who had never seen any production of Porgy and Bess and she was just blown away. Sorry its Broadway run has ended.

    Porgy and Bess

by TigerOwl on 9/26/12Richard Rodgers Theatre - New York

Nikki Renee Daniels (Clara) has a beautiful voice but her acting was lacking. She is singing one of the most tender lullabies of all time, yet she moves around in an awkwardly disjointed manner, shaking the baby in a frenetic way. it was distracting and ruined the scene. I saw the performance twice and she did it the same way both times and I just did not like watching her. I have seen Porgy and Bess several times before, but this is the first time that I felt the character of Bess was portrayed as such a vulnerable and tortured soul. Audra McDonald's Bess engenders empathy and elicits curiosity about what abuse she must have experienced in her past that led to her current desperation. The audience feels genuinely sorry for her, laments her lack of self-esteem, and mourns her descent into relapse. McDonald reveals Bess as seen through Porgy's eyes, such that we, too, see that part of her that is worth saving, worth pursuing, and worth loving.

The two leads had excellent voices but overall the music wasn't as good as most of the other performances that I've attended.

Everything about the show was fantastic -- not just Audra McDonald, but the entire cast. Loved the choreography and lighting too. Too bad the show has closed.

    The Gershwins Porgy & Bess

by TinaJay on 9/25/12Richard Rodgers Theatre - New York

I absolutely loved it from start to finish. The singing was impeccable & i'm sure just short of a real opera instead of a broadway musical. Kudos to everyone who made this possible. It was an honor to be in the presence of such true and talented artists.

    Porgy & Bess

by Pudgers on 9/24/12Richard Rodgers Theatre - New York

Beyond all expectations. One of the best Broadway shows I've ever seen. One fault. The sound system. Waaaaay too much mid-range on the voices during the singing and vocal performances. For the most part, the words to the songs were unintelligible.. Very muddy and mid-rangie. I would think that for a big time Broadway show this could be seriously much better. It's not good when you can't understand a word that the actor is saying. Same for the dialog of the script. Too much mid-range and waay too muddy.

    Jazz basics - opera style

by SandraLS on 9/24/12Richard Rodgers Theatre - New York

I was pleased to listen to old 30s jazz songs and the acting was very good. Just a bit surprised by the opera/soprano style of some of the songs. It was excellent as regards the voices and I like the opera too, but I was expecting more jazzy songs and it changed the soundtrack too modernly for me. Maybe if I knew before I would have appreciated, with less surprise. The quality of acting and of singing is however outstanding and I would definitively recommend the show.

by Dramatherapist7 on 9/24/12Richard Rodgers Theatre - New York

The chemistry between Norm Lewis and Audra McDonald as Porgy & Bess touched me on a soul level in a way I will never forget. The authenticity of Norman Lewis's performance as a cripple was astounding! Bravo to the whole cast! Loved it!

Performances exceeded my already high expectations

by misssun56 on 9/24/12Richard Rodgers Theatre - New York

David Alan Grier and Norm Lewis should have received Tony awards along with Audra McDonald's. Norm Lewis' portrayal of Porgy's physical disability was unbelievable. The rest of the cast was amazing and could have had lead roles in any Broadway production. It was definitely worth my 500 mile travel to NYC.

Best staging of "Porgy and Bess" I have ever seen. Totally worth the trip from Boston to NYC to see this show - and a pity that the show closed the day after I saw it.
