THE ENGLISH BEAT IN CONCERT:
More than three decades after storming the world as a key player in Britain's late-'70s 2 Tone ska revival, The English Beat continue to fire up audiences with their snaking basslines and upbeat-heavy rhythms. Equal parts ska and punk, the band's live shows combine snarling showmanship and polished playing, including wailing saxophone and toasting (monotone rhythmic chanting) by Antonee First Class. Helmed by original frontman Dave Wakeling, the latest incarnation of the band is set to deliver another round of epic performances on their 2014 tour dates.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Founded in 1978 in Birmingham, England, The English Beat joined a roster of like-minded artists on Britain's seminal 2 Tone Records for their 1979 debut single "Tears of a Clown." A year later, their debut LP I Just Can't Stop It peaked at No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart, spawning one of the biggest hits of the new wave era with 2 Tone classic "Mirror in the Bathroom." 1981 follow-up Wha'ppen was a similar success, supported by extensive touring in the US with The Pretenders and the Talking Heads. After the band's breakup in 1983, vocalists Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger found success as General Public, releasing a string of hits including '80s synthpop anthem "Tenderness." Today, the two each head a different branch of The Beat, with Ranking Roger heading up the UK version of the band while Wakeling fronts California-based The English Beat.

ska reigns with English Beat's high energy, dancy music
Excellent show! This was our third time seeing The English Beat.
Great venue - first timers at The Rose and Noel and staff took great care of us. English Beat still get their Ska on - really fun. Would go here again to see a performance.
English Beat was terrific. However the mics were liw and they had problems wuth the sound. The girl running sound seemed very inexperienced. It was the only down side of the show. They should train her better or get someone else to run sound. This was the third time i had seen them ar Ace Of Spades and the other two times sounded great. Hope next time they have the sound problem worked out.
Intimate venue and a stellar performance by Dave Wakling and the rest of the English Beat.
Dave Wakeling has a magnetic energy that pulls you in to skank to his music just like he did in the 80's, he truly is the godfather of Ska! He sounds absloutely brillant, and the Cave is a cozy place to capture the feeling to move yer feet! The English Beat has me Ska'd fer life!
The room was very nice, well lit, good sound, with plenty of seating and room to dance. The staff was very nice and they even changed our seat to a better one when we asked.
The music was awesome and props where due to the Beat! Performance was like a 4 or 5 star. The Canyon besides being an intimate venue could have had a better mix for the audio. Overall the mids were too much, and bass/treb were too low. Not sure if it was the acoustics or the pa/speaker setup. I did enjoy like zero wait for the bar and restrooms. I gave a 3 star due to the seating configuration mostly. The rear seating benches were super tight. Staff was cool and pretty accommodating.
It only took a few song to fill up the *dance* pit and the Beat kept it filled for nearly two hours. Dave wakeling was in fine form and looked happy to be there. The band was great and included members from General Public (I believe) along with Wakelings daughter. They played a good assortment of their tunes with "Sooner Or Later" really charging the crowd up. Alas no encore, not sure why, but it was a good time for all.
Great performance- got us up to dance and enjoy the fantastic music by the Englush Beat/General Public!! They still sound great!!
We had never been to the Libby Bowl before and it was a small, but great venue. We were able to get great seats, which we didn't stay in for long once the band started playing. After a few songs, our favorite song came on and we went to dance by the stage. After a few more songs, we were actually standing at the stage and watching the rest of the show. It was amazing! We got to shake everyone's hands and tell them thank you. What a great venue and experience.
Highly recommend! If you want to do some dancing, this is the band!
Great memories and wonderful night dancing to all the favorites . Love that Dave still sound is timeless!
The Hangar at the OC Fair was an intimate yet rocking venue. Concert was wonderful!!! I attended with old friends and we all enjoyed ourselves. Until next time Mr. Waklin.
We got to hang out with Dave before the show. He has the greatest stories and of course they kill it on stage! Always fun to see a band who appreciates their fans!
Everyone was up dancing and having a fantastic time!
This is one fun band, I would go watch twice a month if they were playing close to home. Always sold out, always worth it. I'm ready for the next performance already.
After all these years still wonderful. Dave Wakeland a great showman. Music can't stop dancing. Love this band!
Traveled all the way from Miami, and had a blast! Even our teenage daughter loved it!
