About

THE ENGLISH BEAT IN CONCERT:

More than three decades after storming the world as a key player in Britain's late-'70s 2 Tone ska revival, The English Beat continue to fire up audiences with their snaking basslines and upbeat-heavy rhythms. Equal parts ska and punk, the band's live shows combine snarling showmanship and polished playing, including wailing saxophone and toasting (monotone rhythmic chanting) by Antonee First Class. Helmed by original frontman Dave Wakeling, the latest incarnation of the band is set to deliver another round of epic performances on their 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Founded in 1978 in Birmingham, England, The English Beat joined a roster of like-minded artists on Britain's seminal 2 Tone Records for their 1979 debut single "Tears of a Clown." A year later, their debut LP I Just Can't Stop It peaked at No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart, spawning one of the biggest hits of the new wave era with 2 Tone classic "Mirror in the Bathroom."  1981 follow-up Wha'ppen was a similar success, supported by extensive touring in the US with The Pretenders and the Talking Heads. After the band's breakup in 1983, vocalists Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger found success as General Public, releasing a string of hits including '80s synthpop anthem "Tenderness." Today, the two each head a different branch of The Beat, with Ranking Roger heading up the UK version of the band while Wakeling fronts California-based The English Beat.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Loved, loved, loved the show! Danced the whole time. They played all their great songs. They really have timeless music that could be enjoyed as much today as it was 30 years ago!"

"English Beat was so fantastic! The energy was high and positive! Everyone was dancing and happy. They totally rocked it out and sounded amazing."

"Dave Wakeling continues to carry the torch for this latest version of the English Beat. The current lineup does a great job. The band kept everyone moving throughout the night and I would definitely go see them again..."

    Review / Experience

by Doogie on 3/21/22The Masquerade - Heaven - Atlanta

The Masquerade - Heaven, Atlanta, GA Show was supposed to start at 7 and doors didn't open until 7:20 - The reason this was an issue was due to the fact that it was pouring rain, yet they wanted us to remain in line in the elements? Why? Very rude. We're not a bunch of kids, consider who's coming to see the Beat... Overpriced drinks, but the bartenders were good. Show The opening band, a Ska band (Don't know their name...) and the Beat were great.

    Band still amazing!!

    by F. A. on 3/21/22Culture Room - Ft Lauderdale

This band still makes the cut! Still sounds great and played most of the hits remembered. They lost their counter part last year as it has been difficult for Dave I’m sure. I wish they had come back out for an encore, but no…& the band that opened up for them, “Bryce Allen Band” from Jupiter, Fl was also amazing as well!!

    Oklahoma Stackhouse

by UptownJohn on 3/20/22Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

I actually purchased tickets to this show to see the opening act, Oklahoma Stackhouse perform in this amazing venue. Their set was energetic, entertaining and "spot on." The sound and lighting engineers did a great job at presenting a very enjoyable show. (I left after their set was finished and cannot comment on the English Beat's presentation.)

English Beat was amazing- Live Nation ignored Covid protocol

by JB on 3/18/22House of Blues New Orleans - New Orleans

Attended this show at the Parish last night. Asked host at the top of the stairs if she was going to check my group's COVID status/vax status and she said it should've been checked downstairs, but this was not the case. Emailed Live Nation to please advise on HOB New Orleans SOP regarding current mandate in NOLA - no response.

    The Beat

by Oliver on 3/13/223TEN Austin City Limits Live - Austin

The band was great it was a wonderful experience, however the show started way too late and I did not see the whole thing. There was no reason for the show to start at 9:15.

    Memories of Youth

by Aussiewebmaster on 3/10/22Marquee Theatre - Tempe

While the band may have changed its lineup - they were recording in the late 70s and released their best work in the early 80s. They played all but one of their well known hits and it was a great overall show. Engaged with the older audience - got everyone dancing and singing along. A really great night

    Full Stop!

by ranKING on 3/10/22Marquee Theatre - Tempe

Overall, the venue, sound, lighting were otstanding. Beer prices are outrageously high. Staff were good. Parking is also overpriced. The band absolutely killed it. Though key members are no longer with us, the band was musically solid and had a lot of fun. Dave's voice was exceptional! Still sounded like 1980! I was disappointed they didn't play "I Confess" or "Tears of a Clown". Would definitely see them again at the same venue. Had way too much fun!

    Review of The English Beat

by W. W. on 12/29/21The Canyon Santa Clarita - Santa Clarita

It would have been a great concert if the lead singer hadn't been completely wasted. He didn't know the lyrics. We couldn't understand a word he said. At one point he was so wasted that 2 people had to go on stage to make sure he didn't fall over or fall down. They brought out a chair for him to try to sit on. They clearly were trying to make sure he stayed upright. It was sad and pathetic. They actually stopped the show twice for a 5 minute break. The band left the stage and did come back but the situation was not any better. To top it off, before the end of when they were supposed to play until, the lead singer declared he was done and proceeded to walk off the stage. I felt so badly for the rest of the band who had to endure this behavior. We paid for and expected a full show with all band members functional. This was a huge disappointment and frankly a rip off. We should all be reimbursed for cost of our tickets,

    SKA

by Brian on 8/31/21The Canyon Santa Clarita - Santa Clarita

English Beat did great. We had a fun time. Worth the experience. I wish they would have played I Confess, but they hit the most of all their top hits. Played for ~1 hour and 30-45 minutes. Also, first time at the Canyon and the venue was really nice.

Dave and band still got it!

by Steve on 8/30/21The Canyon Agoura Hills - Agoura Hills

You can always count on Dave Wakeling bringing his "A" game. His voice is still great (including his amazing sound effects!), the band is tight, and his smile says he loves being able to play again after lockdown. Seeing The English Beat is a great way to relive the 80s. The only improvement would be if he played a couple songs off the 2018 "Here We Go Love!" because that's a surprisingly good album too!

    Friday the 13th Oxnard concert

by M. H. on 8/16/21Oxnard Performing Arts Center - Oxnard

Cool 😎 concert! First time I ever saw English Beat in concert, only had an album from back in the day and they sounded just as good as album. The band’s performance was so much fun. Band mates looked happy to play for us and audience was happy to listen and dance! Great night, thank you English Beat 💓

    Ska at it's best!

by Sammie on 8/16/21Oxnard Performing Arts Center - Oxnard

Always love experiencing Dave Wakeling and the English Beat... takes me back to the '80s! Great start to the 'back together again' concert season after a 1-1/2 year hiatus due to the pandemic.
