THE ENGLISH BEAT IN CONCERT:
More than three decades after storming the world as a key player in Britain's late-'70s 2 Tone ska revival, The English Beat continue to fire up audiences with their snaking basslines and upbeat-heavy rhythms. Equal parts ska and punk, the band's live shows combine snarling showmanship and polished playing, including wailing saxophone and toasting (monotone rhythmic chanting) by Antonee First Class. Helmed by original frontman Dave Wakeling, the latest incarnation of the band is set to deliver another round of epic performances on their 2014 tour dates.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Founded in 1978 in Birmingham, England, The English Beat joined a roster of like-minded artists on Britain's seminal 2 Tone Records for their 1979 debut single "Tears of a Clown." A year later, their debut LP I Just Can't Stop It peaked at No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart, spawning one of the biggest hits of the new wave era with 2 Tone classic "Mirror in the Bathroom." 1981 follow-up Wha'ppen was a similar success, supported by extensive touring in the US with The Pretenders and the Talking Heads. After the band's breakup in 1983, vocalists Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger found success as General Public, releasing a string of hits including '80s synthpop anthem "Tenderness." Today, the two each head a different branch of The Beat, with Ranking Roger heading up the UK version of the band while Wakeling fronts California-based The English Beat.
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:
"Loved, loved, loved the show! Danced the whole time. They played all their great songs. They really have timeless music that could be enjoyed as much today as it was 30 years ago!"
"English Beat was so fantastic! The energy was high and positive! Everyone was dancing and happy. They totally rocked it out and sounded amazing."
"Dave Wakeling continues to carry the torch for this latest version of the English Beat. The current lineup does a great job. The band kept everyone moving throughout the night and I would definitely go see them again..."
They played for 2 hours. Really high energy. Danced the whole time. Love them!
One of the best Beat shows I've ever been to, and I'm a frequent flyer. Venue is tops and the band played an extra long set. Audience was actually BEGGING FOR MORE at the end!
Opening band was pretty bad but The English Beat sounded great! Venue was so-so but sound was decent and you could get up nice and close to the stage if you wanted.
It was a great show I'd see the English Beat as often as I could! They have a high energy show and is truly fun!
The Uptown Theatre in Napa, CA is a wonderful venue with an amazing sound system. Parking for the event was easy and free. The English Beat had the whole theatre up and dancing. The lead singer has a great voice and the band sounds fantastic live. If you like Ska music then this is the band to see!!
Great show! They played two sets. Lucky us. Great venue.
They played 2 hours of pure fun, all of the songs were good, they played everything I wanted to hear, tenderness, Save it for later, Mirror in the Bathroom, I Confess, Can't get used to loosing you and more!
Amazing! The only thing missing was Ranking Roger...incredible!
how could I have forgotten just how great they are? they stole my heart again - look fantastic, sound fantastic. Love, love, love TEB.
Always a dance band that that gets the mild crowd crazy. The sounds sound great over and over performance after performance. Dave is a legend, really and he likes his job. Showbox with its wood floor moves to the rhythm of the band and the crowd. As Dave says- put your cameras away and live the moment with English Beat!!! I will go again and again!!
I've seen them a few times now and was drawn in by the sheer talent if Dave Wakeling. Fantasic! If you want to see a real group of talented artists, grab a show and you will be treated to a great live show.
English Beat has been rocking the ska club scene for 32 years now, as they reminded us on Wednesday night at the Showbox-Market. Despite the long tenure, they sound as fresh as ever. They kept the mostly over 30 crowd hopping and there were more than the normal quotient of hot mommas, shakin it 80s style. There were drunks and punks as well, but they were in the minority. It was my third time seeing the Beat and they didn't disappoint. Roger is back with some interesting rythmic chatter between songs. It was great music and a great night out. Felt more like the weekend than a Wednesday although the over 30 crowd left a little early to get home for the babysitters. I can't recommend the Beat enough. I'd see them again in a heartbeat.
Small crowd. Great Dancing. The Beat Still has it. The food at the Show box was marginal.
The English Beat haven't lost a beat! Dave Wakeling sounded amazing and the band played a tight set that lasted over two hours. Great time had by all - I'd definitely see them again!
they did not come on the stage until 10pm...very annoying when you cant sit down..doors opened at 8pm...thank goodness i did not show up until 9pm...or else i would have left...sound was good...but they should have played songs from general public
