About

THE ENGLISH BEAT IN CONCERT:

More than three decades after storming the world as a key player in Britain's late-'70s 2 Tone ska revival, The English Beat continue to fire up audiences with their snaking basslines and upbeat-heavy rhythms. Equal parts ska and punk, the band's live shows combine snarling showmanship and polished playing, including wailing saxophone and toasting (monotone rhythmic chanting) by Antonee First Class. Helmed by original frontman Dave Wakeling, the latest incarnation of the band is set to deliver another round of epic performances on their 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Founded in 1978 in Birmingham, England, The English Beat joined a roster of like-minded artists on Britain's seminal 2 Tone Records for their 1979 debut single "Tears of a Clown." A year later, their debut LP I Just Can't Stop It peaked at No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart, spawning one of the biggest hits of the new wave era with 2 Tone classic "Mirror in the Bathroom."  1981 follow-up Wha'ppen was a similar success, supported by extensive touring in the US with The Pretenders and the Talking Heads. After the band's breakup in 1983, vocalists Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger found success as General Public, releasing a string of hits including '80s synthpop anthem "Tenderness." Today, the two each head a different branch of The Beat, with Ranking Roger heading up the UK version of the band while Wakeling fronts California-based The English Beat.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Loved, loved, loved the show! Danced the whole time. They played all their great songs. They really have timeless music that could be enjoyed as much today as it was 30 years ago!"

"English Beat was so fantastic! The energy was high and positive! Everyone was dancing and happy. They totally rocked it out and sounded amazing."

"Dave Wakeling continues to carry the torch for this latest version of the English Beat. The current lineup does a great job. The band kept everyone moving throughout the night and I would definitely go see them again..."

    It was fantastic!

by Brooklyn Beast on 4/3/23Palladium Times Square - New York City

The Palladium is new and nice. The beverage prices reasonable. The sound was great. Also, the best woman's bathroom ever at a concert.

    Meh

by Ernie Tross on 4/3/23Palladium Times Square - New York City

Seeing and hearing the English Beat live was quite fun. However, the venue and scheduling caused quite a bit of disappointment. Doors 6:30, show 7:30 apparently means the band comes on at 9:10pm. Before the band a DJ played, and the sound was so awful and distorted that it was impossible to wait in the main hall. I suspect this was done on purpose by the sound board guys at the venue. Lastly, $20 drinks is insane.

    High energy fun

by katnap on 3/23/23Birchmere - Alexandria

Great to hear the original singer is still in great voice and clearly enjoys performing. And the rest of the band are so energetic and fun to watch. The rapper is way talented, and the sax player is totally non-stop. My friends and I had a fantastic time.

    Fun night with Dave Wakeling

by SKAMAMA on 4/11/22Delmar Hall - Saint Louis

Dave sounds great and plays all the hits from The Beat and General Public. I don't think I've danced that much since before COVID.

    They've still got ska!

by Poodle rock on 4/11/22Delmar Hall - Saint Louis

Delmar Hall is a great venue. The music sound level was perfect. It has a dance floor. They served water for free! The opening band was great. English Beat/General Public was great. Had an amazing time. Now, if people would be just about more polite about showing up late and then pushing their way in front of other people! Overall great experience.

Some glitches, but overall fun night!

by Beat Fan on 4/2/22Chevalier Theatre - Medford

Was a good show overall. Opening band didn’t show up which was a bummer. The entire “moving venue from Wilbur to the Chevalier and making it general admission” was pretty awful and stressful, since we had front row tickets for the original show and a hotel booked in order to walk to the Wilbur. Having said all that, we had a great time dancing and the music was good. If you are a fan and haven’t seen the English Beat, it’s well worth going, but if you saw them in their younger days, you might want to keep that memory. The Noble drink app was very confusing. Just know that at the Chevalier they have a full bar (expensive) but more selections than the app shows. One great thing about Chevalier is free parking nearby!

The Beat sounded great and can still bring it

by Bos Guy on 4/2/22Chevalier Theatre - Medford

Raking Roger's son did a good job, but it is so hard to fill his father's shoes. I wish they had played I Confess and General Publc, but it was still a fun show..

The English Beat - still the best!

by Suzie Q on 3/22/22Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

Great band, great venue. Everyone grooving to the English Beat. Two things would have made the show sensational: if they had played longer and if they had used a professional opening band. So glad the English Beat are still performing!

Love the English Beat. They had the joint rockin from the first note. Very tight band with a lot of young talent.
