About

THE ENGLISH BEAT IN CONCERT:

More than three decades after storming the world as a key player in Britain's late-'70s 2 Tone ska revival, The English Beat continue to fire up audiences with their snaking basslines and upbeat-heavy rhythms. Equal parts ska and punk, the band's live shows combine snarling showmanship and polished playing, including wailing saxophone and toasting (monotone rhythmic chanting) by Antonee First Class. Helmed by original frontman Dave Wakeling, the latest incarnation of the band is set to deliver another round of epic performances on their 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Founded in 1978 in Birmingham, England, The English Beat joined a roster of like-minded artists on Britain's seminal 2 Tone Records for their 1979 debut single "Tears of a Clown." A year later, their debut LP I Just Can't Stop It peaked at No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart, spawning one of the biggest hits of the new wave era with 2 Tone classic "Mirror in the Bathroom."  1981 follow-up Wha'ppen was a similar success, supported by extensive touring in the US with The Pretenders and the Talking Heads. After the band's breakup in 1983, vocalists Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger found success as General Public, releasing a string of hits including '80s synthpop anthem "Tenderness." Today, the two each head a different branch of The Beat, with Ranking Roger heading up the UK version of the band while Wakeling fronts California-based The English Beat.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Loved, loved, loved the show! Danced the whole time. They played all their great songs. They really have timeless music that could be enjoyed as much today as it was 30 years ago!"

"English Beat was so fantastic! The energy was high and positive! Everyone was dancing and happy. They totally rocked it out and sounded amazing."

"Dave Wakeling continues to carry the torch for this latest version of the English Beat. The current lineup does a great job. The band kept everyone moving throughout the night and I would definitely go see them again..."

    Can't Beat the English Beat

by NY68 on 10/22/12The Rapids Theatre - Niagara Falls

The English Beat continues to impress. The years have been very kind to this group of musicians who still play with amazing energy. They are tight, and their music still sounds fresh after all these years. Listening to the radio today is pretty boring. The pop songs all sound the same - industrialized versions of the same stale beats and singers whose voices go through computer mixers to make them sound generic. The English Beat brings a variety of takes with tgheir music. It goes deeper than most people think. Great to see them rocking on after all these years.

I just loved the venue for this show. It was small enough that no seat was a terrible seat. The bands were both awesome and sounded great. I enjoyed every minute of it.

    Amazing Show

by SoCalToon on 7/31/12OC Fair & Event Center - Costa Mesa

The Beat performed better than I could have imagined. I have not seen them in concert since 1980 and this concert reminded me of when they were on top of the world.

    The Beat & The Originalites

by Clairey on 7/31/12OC Fair & Event Center - Costa Mesa

What a great evening they gave us! Had never seen The Originalites and became an instant fan. How wonderful to hear real ska music in OC - not only their original music but amazing covers of the Beat, the Specials & Sublime. Their drummer is crazy intense; I haven't seen a drummer with his level of energy and stamina in a long time. Dave Wakeling gave us such a wonderful concert. He played all the favorites but amped it up with a young man from Jamaica, Antonee First Class. He improv'd and emceed, rapping to the crowd as a modern day poet. The best part of the night, aside from the music, was that Dave met up with his fans and allowed us all a chance for a hug and photo! He gave every fan several minutes and wouldn't allow others to intrude upon that time! Icon!

    The Beat in the O.C.

by TheVitaminJ on 7/31/12OC Fair & Event Center - Costa Mesa

The English Beat was great. The played all of their best songs. Dave still has a beautiful voice and the sax was clean and smooth. Also, they did extended versions of all their songs. Lots of people were very drunk, but that made things all the more exciting. Would do it again in a heart - beat.

The English Beat Have Not Lost Their Beat!

by Evilsteph on 7/31/12OC Fair & Event Center - Costa Mesa

I first saw the English Beat at Red Rocks Amphitheater almost thirty years ago (REM and Bow Wow Wow were the opening bands) and I have loved them ever since. For the last couple of years I have been stalking them on the internet to see where they they were if they would be touring any time soon. After I discovered they were coming to Southern California each day I counted the number of days untiil the concert. I WAS NOT DISSAPOINTED! Futhermore, I was able to share this wonderful concert with my husband and daughter. The band, Dave and Roger are still the best ever! Next time I would love to hear my all-time favorite song "Save It for Later" so they owe me one, but for now I will keep playing it in my car! Love you guys! <3

The English Beat was as good as ever!

by Arkablat on 7/31/12OC Fair & Event Center - Costa Mesa

I missed The Originalites, but I came in to the Hangar just in time for the main show, which was better than I had expected after 30 years of just listening to their records. They put on such a great show without missing a BEAT, improvising here and there and then after the show I got to hear The Originalites at the bar next door and even meet Dave Wakeling! Could this have been any better? Only if they had signed one of my original LPs that I failed to bring with me! But what a good time! I like that the Hangar opens to the fair so it's not such a claustrophobic experience for the band while they're playing. It's like they're playing to a huge room, almost stadium-like. Decent light-show, good sound, not too loud, altogether well done!

    dave wakeling is the best

by lalabo on 7/8/12The Norva - Norfolk

great show at the Norva! small crowd, band sounded great, played all the hits. only flaw was the audience.. a bunch of women from the audience jumped on stage dancing like strippers. was embarrassing to watch, esp. with only 1 of the 6 apparently even knowing the lyrics! but overall had a great time, enjoyed hearing Dave's raunchy yet charming banter b/w the songs, and the Toaster, whose name i can't remember, is tops.

    The English Beat was unforgettable

    by Jude125 on 7/1/12Mickey Finns - Toledo

One of the best concerts that I've attended in my life. The crowd and venue were small, but Dave and the boys played their heart out. The energy was unreal, and I felt that I was back in 1982 when they were filming the video for "Save it for later". They engaged the crowd, keeping them dancing on their feet. They also played a few General Public numbers. I was ecstatic they played "Sole Salvation" something they hadn't done since their 1983 tour.I wish the show had been advertised/promoted them better.

The English Beat; Up Close and Personal!

by futer on 6/25/12Mickey Finns - Toledo

This show was great. Small venue and the Beat sounded great; just like they did back then and on their albums. The band was available before and after the show to chat and praise. One problem: the show was booked to start at 8pm and did not start until 10 pm. Mickey Finn's also did not have food, but allowed pizza delivery (good compromise).

English Beat play out more than any other band...

by rufusina on 6/12/12The Canyon - Agoura Hills

It was an excellent show, although I thought they were tighter at the last show i saw at that crazy tiny venue in Long Beach, CA. Still I danced my feet off to the point of needing an asian massage the next day so I could actually walk. Can't wait for the next show... What else can I say, it was great and I love the band, they are my all time favorites..
