About

THE ENGLISH BEAT IN CONCERT:

More than three decades after storming the world as a key player in Britain's late-'70s 2 Tone ska revival, The English Beat continue to fire up audiences with their snaking basslines and upbeat-heavy rhythms. Equal parts ska and punk, the band's live shows combine snarling showmanship and polished playing, including wailing saxophone and toasting (monotone rhythmic chanting) by Antonee First Class. Helmed by original frontman Dave Wakeling, the latest incarnation of the band is set to deliver another round of epic performances on their 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Founded in 1978 in Birmingham, England, The English Beat joined a roster of like-minded artists on Britain's seminal 2 Tone Records for their 1979 debut single "Tears of a Clown." A year later, their debut LP I Just Can't Stop It peaked at No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart, spawning one of the biggest hits of the new wave era with 2 Tone classic "Mirror in the Bathroom."  1981 follow-up Wha'ppen was a similar success, supported by extensive touring in the US with The Pretenders and the Talking Heads. After the band's breakup in 1983, vocalists Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger found success as General Public, releasing a string of hits including '80s synthpop anthem "Tenderness." Today, the two each head a different branch of The Beat, with Ranking Roger heading up the UK version of the band while Wakeling fronts California-based The English Beat.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Loved, loved, loved the show! Danced the whole time. They played all their great songs. They really have timeless music that could be enjoyed as much today as it was 30 years ago!"

"English Beat was so fantastic! The energy was high and positive! Everyone was dancing and happy. They totally rocked it out and sounded amazing."

"Dave Wakeling continues to carry the torch for this latest version of the English Beat. The current lineup does a great job. The band kept everyone moving throughout the night and I would definitely go see them again..."

    The English Beat Rocked!

by BT82 on 6/11/12The Canyon - Agoura Hills

They sounded great! They had just as much enthusiasm as they did in the 80's.

Though I went to the event to see The Romantics, I have to admit I thoroughly enjoyed seeing The English Beat as well. Many old memories with these two bands!

The English Beat - Kept me dancing

by DimestoreNovelist on 4/25/12Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

The English Beat was amazing. From the moment they started playing, I couldn't stop dancing. The venue was perfect -- intimate and wonderful acoustics. The only thing missing was a mosh pit (am I too old for that -- never!) The opening act was fun too.

    Twist and Crawl

by EnglishBeatup on 4/25/12Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

The body felt twisted the day after, and I am pretty sure I crawled home, but it was WELL worth the price of admission physically and monetarily speaking!

    Keeping up with The Beat

by BeatfanfromOC on 4/23/12Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

Dave and the Beat have not lost anything since I first saw them 30 years ago Orange County, CA. They played all the staples with even Stand Down Margaret included. Throw in some General Public and the show went on for 2 hours. Seeing The Beat is a ritual when they come through St Louis and they never disappoint.

The English Beat was great - Venue So-so!

by Bloomingtonboy on 4/23/12Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

As usual, The English Beat put on a great show! The sang their popular songs for a storied career, and Dave Wakeling still sings his heart out. For those of you who loved the original ska music, with its ranking and upbeat tempos, this is a must show! The venue left a lot to be desired, though. The Duck Room at Blueberry HIll is infamous for its performances, but this night the room was filled with middle age housewives and men who forgot they are 50 and can't hold their liquor the same as they did when they were 18! The place was packed, but you had drunk folks dancing wildly, spilling alcohol everywhere, bumping into you throughout the night (without a care or even knowledge of what they were doing), screaming along with the songs, and even causing a couple of fights to break out. You know you have a problem when the band has to stop to address a couple of idiots in the crowd who are fighting! Perhaps I am getting too old, but this ruined the show for me (that and standing for 4 hours - when did I get this old!). The band - superb! The crowd and venue - sucked!

    EXHILARATING

by rednepenthe on 4/20/12Blind Pig - Ann Arbor

time and time again, it feels like the first time I've seen them live. wonderful that Dave shows no sign of tiring - playing the excellent "save it for later", perhaps for the 10,000th time in his life, with as much zest and vigor as in the 80s. this man's voice is so incredibly unique and so good on the ears. the concert is and energetic experience that stays with you for days. GO.

Almost On Stage With the Beat !

by DRCook on 3/26/12Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

The show was incredible! Dave sounded the same after all these years. They really got the crowd jammin' (newbies and Boomers the like) with their waves of ska beat. The sound of the sax was as smooth as a baby's bottom...such good jazz. ! We watched just about the entire show leaning on the stage shakin' to the Beat. Crowd went wild with last song "Mirror in the Bathroom"..ha ha !

We had great seats up front at a side table. The lead singer was humorous and they sounded great. The sax and ska was right on.

Great fun! too crowded though, because the venue was smaller than the popularity of the group. It caused a few fights to break out and the band had to stop the concert momentarily to remove the irritants. But overall, it was very fun. I didn't stop dancing the entire time!

    Not a good night

by neuromode on 2/5/12Tiki Bar - Costa Mesa

Kinda an odd day - I woke up at 3:30am that morning... and I had to get up the same time the next day...so I was really tired, but I told myself I was going to just power through it and get to the show. Show was scheduled to start at 8:00. So, I drove about an hour and a half from Venice, on a friday night, got there about 8:45. Opening act as expected... Kinda a dinky sports bar, all is fine. So, I grab a beer... hang in out... 9 rolls by, no band... 10... no band.... 11, still no english beat. FINALLY, something starts to happen on the stage around 11:15. With no announcement, some guy comes on stage waving his hands and some music starts up. I wonder to myself, could this be them? I could barely hear anything - this felt like some high school band playing. The crowd in my immediate area looked CLUELESS that the main act had just come on and continued to chat in their circles. I figured this was time to finally make a break for the bathroom. While I'm walking out, this big black guy is handing out towels asks, somewhat disappointingly "Is that the english beat? I kinda just shrugged, and said "I think so" Then some other guy chimes in "No, that's the british beat" I couldn't tell if he was joking, if it was some alternate name i'd never heard, or if this was some cover band" hahah Anyway, I get outta the bathroom - by this time they've moved onto some other song, which sounded vaguely familiar - but I couldn't be sure because it was like they were playing unplugged. So, midway into the second song, I left. I'm really disappointed. I don't want to bash the english beat - Aside from being way late, I can't blame them entirely for this crap venue... but wow, what a disappointing night. I've wanted to see them for years, but now that's been crushed after wasting money like this. IF (big if) I ever go to see them again, it's going to have to be somewhere I'm more familiar with.

Fun-old school Band! The random small hometown venue made it seem like we were seeing a local band. It was also very invteresting in some ways... The Engish beat is so Iconic of the 80's, It was kinda cool.

    Dave was magical

by Dpbdds on 10/3/11Whiskey Roadhouse-Horseshoe Council Bluffs Casino - Council Bluffs

It would of been great to see Ranking Roger and Dave together again, but Dave is the ultimate entertainer, who enjoys performing and interacting with the crowd. Sound was great.

English Beat great! Whiskey Roadhouse not!!!

by ZenDruid49 on 10/2/11Whiskey Roadhouse-Horseshoe Council Bluffs Casino - Council Bluffs

Saw the US-version of The Beat, led by original-member Dave Wakling, at the Horseshoe Casino's Whiskey Roadhouse in Council Bluffs, IA. I saw this band last year at Omaha's great show bar, Slowdown. This year's show was good, and would have been much better except for the venue. The band covered hits and so tunes I didn't know, and clearly enjoyed themselves as much as the crowd enjoyed listening. They played for two uninterrupted hours! But no encore :(. The Roadhouse is basically the Casino's bar with a stage and dance floor (& open to all the noise from the slots on the Casino floor). Only a few high-top tables and side banquet seating; all "reserved" for their comped "high rollers" so those of us who paid for tickets were forced to stand or sit off to the side in bar (and have the music compete with the slot "ding, ding, ding" all through the show. Security staff was rude beyond belief. Bar food abysmal. Would not recommend this venue to anyone. Hope the English Beat comes back to Omaha and plays the Slowdown or Waiting Room. Great ska band with some classic tunes.

    Great to see live.

    by chaw16 on 9/19/11SOHO - Santa Barbara

They may not have all original band members but their show is so great to see live. I see them every time they come through Santa Barbara. They seem to really love playing every time and Dave sounds as good as ever. I would recommend everyone that is into music go check them out. Their music gets everyone dancing.
