About

The Drums on Tour

For those who like their indie rock both sweet and sour, you can always count on The Drums to put on a loud, lively and emotionally powerful show. With magnetic frontman Jonny Pierce at the helm, the Brooklyn-based band has experienced a successful, if not rocky, evolution since first performing together in 2009 in NYC. The Drums have been busy on the road every single year since, even while enduring lineup shifts. Still, Pierce has always managed to bring his heart and soul to the stage, from the band's first big shows in the U.S. and across the pond in the U.K. to multiple major festival appearances at Coachella (in 2011 and 2018), Outside Lands (in 2015) and Lollapalooza (in 2011 and 2017). He continues on with The Drums name - and signature style - touring the U.S. in support of the band's fifth album, 2019's Brutalism.

The Drums in Concert

The Drums have been helping keep indie rock alive and raw since 2009, when childhood buddies Jonathan Pierce and Jacob Graham moved to Brooklyn, added drummer Connor Hanwick and guitarist Adam Kessler, and soon took the band to an international level. While their career seemed to take off rather quickly, it was actually several years in the making. Pierce and Graham first met at bible camp during their pre-teen years and hit it off with a mutual adoration for synth-pop. They started the short-lived band Elkland, in New York, but after that project dissolved, the two moved down to Florida, where the seeds for The Drums began to form. It wasn't until they relocated to Brooklyn, though, that the band took off. Their debut EP, 2009's Summertime!, caught on with the American and British press, especially the catchy surf-pop single "Let's Go Surfing." Their self-titled debut album followed the next year and peaked at No. 17 on the U.S. Heatseekers chart. Only one more year would pass before they released their sophomore album, Portamento, and took to the road for a busy world tour. But by this point, the lineup was starting to crumble. Kessler had already left the band and soon Hanwick would as well. Pierce and Graham kept the group going for 2014's Encyclopedia. Then, in 2017, Graham announced his departure, as frontman Pierce took on the full job of writing and producing The Drums' fourth album, Abysmal Thoughts. Though he's become the last remaining member of The Drums, Pierce has continued to keep the band's synth-lined aesthetic intact as his songwriting has turned more poignant and personal, especially on the 2019 album Brutalism.

I love The Drums and was really excited about seeing them live for the first time and Bowery Ballroom is my favorite venue in the city. Unfortunately, it was nothing I was expecting. They sounded awful live. I left after two songs. I even posted a video of the "noise" on my instagram and warned my friends never to see them live.

    The Drums

by LeDrums on 6/12/12Body English at Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas - Las Vegas

I know it's a cliche however it was one of the most amazing concerts I've been too! From Part Time to Craft Spells to The Drums it was awesome! It was a great environment, and nothing but good vibes all night! Part Time sounded unbelievable live, and Justin with the Craft Spells killed it! The Drums set list was unreal! It was a perfect mix of Portamento and the Self Titled Album. The way each band interacted with the crowed made for a great concert. Even if the tickets were $50 each I would still attend. The Hard Rock needs to bring back The Drums, and guests in concert in the future. Also being able to interact with the band after the concert was epic! I received the most awesome Bob Dillon dollar drawing and signature from Justin of the Craft Spells! Overall, it will be a night that I never forget.

I traveled from Los Angeles to Las Vegas just to see this show. I even missed MOther's Day, oops. Haha. When I stepped into this venue I was so amazed. There were many locations to stand and look at the bands play. I loved how close the stage was. Best time I had in a long time. The Show was Great and so was this Venue.

The Drums were absolutely great - couldnt have asked for a better show. they were everything my friends and expected, being big fans we were not let down. even one of my friends who had never heard of them enjoyed herself. they sounded great, were totally sweet and up beat and Johnny's dance moves stole the show. I will definitely be attending their next show in the area

The Drums were great (as always)

by Mcdirk on 4/28/12Webster Hall - New York

The Drums were wonderful, energetic and intense, as they always are. Great sets - highly recommended. Craft Spells were good. Nice set overall. Part Time was also quite good - much better than I'd expected - solid sound. Webster Hall still doesn't let you up on the second floor, which sucks, but the sightlines from the main floor are decent from most spots. What's the point of having wifi at Webster Hall if you need a password to access it?

I have been waiting.to see the Drums for.such a long time and finally I got.to see them last Sunday. They were AMAZING!! I love Jhonny's dance moves. The two bands were great, but I like Craft Spell. They were as well Amazing. The only thing was the audio sound. We couldn't hear what they were singing. Overall, The 3 bands are worth to see.

    The drums were amazing!!!!!

by Anonymous on 4/25/12Webster Hall - New York

I didn't know the other two bands that played (part-time, Craft Spells) but they were good. I think everyone was looking forward to The main event though. It was awesome I was right by the stage. The singer was funny as always and we all were dancing, he played a few songs from his old album and some new songs (money!) from their new album Portamento. After they played thought the whole set list they thanked everyone and said how happy they were to be in new York again and they left. Everyone starting chanting "Encore! Let's. Go. Sur-fing!!" They came back out and played 3 more songs! There the best :D
