The Drums on Tour
For those who like their indie rock both sweet and sour, you can always count on The Drums to put on a loud, lively and emotionally powerful show. With magnetic frontman Jonny Pierce at the helm, the Brooklyn-based band has experienced a successful, if not rocky, evolution since first performing together in 2009 in NYC. The Drums have been busy on the road every single year since, even while enduring lineup shifts. Still, Pierce has always managed to bring his heart and soul to the stage, from the band's first big shows in the U.S. and across the pond in the U.K. to multiple major festival appearances at Coachella (in 2011 and 2018), Outside Lands (in 2015) and Lollapalooza (in 2011 and 2017). He continues on with The Drums name - and signature style - touring the U.S. in support of the band's fifth album, 2019's Brutalism.
The Drums in Concert
The Drums have been helping keep indie rock alive and raw since 2009, when childhood buddies Jonathan Pierce and Jacob Graham moved to Brooklyn, added drummer Connor Hanwick and guitarist Adam Kessler, and soon took the band to an international level. While their career seemed to take off rather quickly, it was actually several years in the making. Pierce and Graham first met at bible camp during their pre-teen years and hit it off with a mutual adoration for synth-pop. They started the short-lived band Elkland, in New York, but after that project dissolved, the two moved down to Florida, where the seeds for The Drums began to form. It wasn't until they relocated to Brooklyn, though, that the band took off. Their debut EP, 2009's Summertime!, caught on with the American and British press, especially the catchy surf-pop single "Let's Go Surfing." Their self-titled debut album followed the next year and peaked at No. 17 on the U.S. Heatseekers chart. Only one more year would pass before they released their sophomore album, Portamento, and took to the road for a busy world tour. But by this point, the lineup was starting to crumble. Kessler had already left the band and soon Hanwick would as well. Pierce and Graham kept the group going for 2014's Encyclopedia. Then, in 2017, Graham announced his departure, as frontman Pierce took on the full job of writing and producing The Drums' fourth album, Abysmal Thoughts. Though he's become the last remaining member of The Drums, Pierce has continued to keep the band's synth-lined aesthetic intact as his songwriting has turned more poignant and personal, especially on the 2019 album Brutalism.
Great show! Very impressed. Both my son and I highly recommend!
I HAD SO MUCH FUN!!! definitely quite an amazing show. would definitely recommend this kinda show to anyone who’s looking for a great time (like i had). a bit rougher than i expected as far as the crowd but me and my brother had a lot of fun nevertheless. i <3 the drums forever and ever!!
The crowd was all TikTok age kids, which I should’ve done my research beforehand about their new audience but okay. The crowd was rude, didn’t know basic etiquette so you know what you’ll get when you go. Some guy was zonked out of his mind touching women and then playing stupid (happened to me) and when I told security they asked me where he was and then said they had been chasing him all night. An almost three hour show and you can’t find someone whose description is very easy to find? Useless
Like the 5th time I’ve seen them in person and each time is the same: amazing! He did an encore and everything. Spoke to the audience and made us feel special. Fantastic stuff
Overall a great experience no major problems, just to slightly improvements y’all should make. If it’s raining please place some tents out for for guest and guest safety. A lot of people were pushing to get close to the front
It was absolutely phenomenal. They sounded perfect. Jonny Pierce can do no wrong. Couldn’t have been better.
It was a great night, the music, the venue, everything all around was a good time. Line was well organized and optimized.
I had never seen The Drums but felt like they may be a great live band. They exceeded my expectations. From the beginning to the end, frontman Jonathon grabbed the crowd and never let go! It was like seeing the Smiths or the Cure for the first time. Somehow everyone in the crowd knew every word and the energy was mind blowing! Amazing show!
The drums were fantastic! Their energy permeated the room and they sounded awesome
This was seriously one of the best nights of my life, even got to meet Jonny and Jacob it was like a dream I love this band and even the opening act was awesome love the drums, forever and ever
The Drums were great as usual, but that venue is just bad.
Okay, before I start, I would only recommend to a friend because I LOVE the drums. But honestly it was annoying that the show claimed to start at 8 and the band came out at 10:06. I've been to shows before and I've never experienced such a long wait. The opening band came out at 9 so it's not like they performed for two hours either. Personally I thought that was rude especially since it was on a Sunday and my ride expected it to be over at 10. I only got to watch them for five minutes. However, I really liked the venue.
first of all, i am so in love with this venue! seriously i think its my favorite! the mayan decor, its intimacy, everything is amazing. I would love for all of the future concerts i attend to be here! that would be amazing! The Drums were beyond incredible! I wish i could see every show they play! They are truly amazing! They played so many songs & are so amazing live! they really put on an amazing show that gets the crowd going and you'd wish it never ended! one of the best ive been to. overall, id love to repeat this moment over & over.
Their show was seriously beyond amazing, words cannot describe how good it was, the crowd was just right, their set list was perfect played just a perfect amount of songs from their new album and from their past albums. Seriously best two hours ever!!!
3rd time i've seen them and they never disappoint.
The Drums put on a great show, the crowd sang along to almost every song. GREAT BAND. LOVED IT. Jonny Pierce has some good dance moves.
I waited 3 hours in line but it was totally worth it! Jonny and Jacob are incredible and seeing them live makes my heart explode!
The Drums put on a great show for a great, sold out crowd!
Great show, great sound and great atmosphere. The Drums put on a lively and fun show. I definitely recommend.
it was a really cool show; very crowded! a little rowdy in the back, near the bar. they played several songs off of the new album that were not yet available on itunes. at any rate, a really good set. the sound was good & loud!
