About

The Drums on Tour

For those who like their indie rock both sweet and sour, you can always count on The Drums to put on a loud, lively and emotionally powerful show. With magnetic frontman Jonny Pierce at the helm, the Brooklyn-based band has experienced a successful, if not rocky, evolution since first performing together in 2009 in NYC. The Drums have been busy on the road every single year since, even while enduring lineup shifts. Still, Pierce has always managed to bring his heart and soul to the stage, from the band's first big shows in the U.S. and across the pond in the U.K. to multiple major festival appearances at Coachella (in 2011 and 2018), Outside Lands (in 2015) and Lollapalooza (in 2011 and 2017). He continues on with The Drums name - and signature style - touring the U.S. in support of the band's fifth album, 2019's Brutalism.

The Drums in Concert

The Drums have been helping keep indie rock alive and raw since 2009, when childhood buddies Jonathan Pierce and Jacob Graham moved to Brooklyn, added drummer Connor Hanwick and guitarist Adam Kessler, and soon took the band to an international level. While their career seemed to take off rather quickly, it was actually several years in the making. Pierce and Graham first met at bible camp during their pre-teen years and hit it off with a mutual adoration for synth-pop. They started the short-lived band Elkland, in New York, but after that project dissolved, the two moved down to Florida, where the seeds for The Drums began to form. It wasn't until they relocated to Brooklyn, though, that the band took off. Their debut EP, 2009's Summertime!, caught on with the American and British press, especially the catchy surf-pop single "Let's Go Surfing." Their self-titled debut album followed the next year and peaked at No. 17 on the U.S. Heatseekers chart. Only one more year would pass before they released their sophomore album, Portamento, and took to the road for a busy world tour. But by this point, the lineup was starting to crumble. Kessler had already left the band and soon Hanwick would as well. Pierce and Graham kept the group going for 2014's Encyclopedia. Then, in 2017, Graham announced his departure, as frontman Pierce took on the full job of writing and producing The Drums' fourth album, Abysmal Thoughts. Though he's become the last remaining member of The Drums, Pierce has continued to keep the band's synth-lined aesthetic intact as his songwriting has turned more poignant and personal, especially on the 2019 album Brutalism.

One of the best concerts I've been to so far.

by Kiddiex3 on 11/9/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

I've seen most of my favorite bands already but nothing ever compares to the Drums. I've seen them twice, and by far, the second time around was the best. They have the best quality sound for a live show (let's be honest, some bands sound like shit live) and each member are just amazing to watch as they play. You can really tell they're enjoying themselves which makes you very happy for them. Johnny is an amazing lead for the band and seeing him dance just gets you into that mood of dancing yourself--even if it's a bit ridiculous. They played two of my favorite songs, "Submarine" and "I felt Stupid", which definitely had me in tears. They're just beyond amazing and so far the best concert I've been to. Can't wait for them to come back around the NY/NJ area.

The Drums will always be a favorite band of mine. I really enjoyed the show. The only thing that really stood out was that the vocalist was very intoxicated. I thought he was going to fall off stage at one point. The fact that the singer was so intoxicated caused the guitarist to clearly be agitated. He turned his back on the audience for the majority of the show.

The Drums are a Class Act

by FunkyStrawberry on 11/9/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

It was a sold-out crowd, The Drums were in top form, and the entire venue was dancing-- and this was on a MONDAY night. I would definitely recommend seeing the band live. Videos posted online don't do them justice. Also, Bowery Ballroom provided a great atmosphere as a nice cherry on top!

The Drums were great live; a lot of really obnoxious people who were single-song fans though. Jonny's dancing was rad, and the setlist was a really good selection.

The show was a great dancing party! I felt the show was too short. Though, majority of the show was from the second album Portamento with a few songs from their first album. The boys did come back out for two additional songs that ended the show. It was fun, great energy. The venue was perfect for The Drums.

Just pop music... no more, no less!

by ClaudioRoma on 10/26/10Webster Hall - New York

After an intense and efficient opening act by Surfer Blood (whose gig is by far much better than the album, as their songs gain a lot of power when performed on stage), The Drums got onto the stage for a set full of classics. Let me to explain that: their are catchy, simple, and you have the impression they just play hits all the time. Their choruses stuck in your memory, and despite that "I've heard this before" impression, they play with passion, and it's just impossible not having fun with their show. I believe I've seen one of the best new bands of the year. I hope their next albuns keep bringing us some other bunches of classic tunes for us to keep whistling along.

    The Drums saves pop music!

by Rocknerd on 10/23/10Webster Hall - New York

I haven't been excited about a new band in years. Along comes The Drums and reminds me of how great a Pop band can be. There's something familiar & fresh about their sound. It's a touch of the past with a future sound. This was my first Drums concert & they did not disappoint. I love their youthful energy. The songs sound amazing live. I had a blast & the audience did too. A great night at Webster Hall!!

Surfer Blood live was absolutely amazing! My friends and i were dancing all night non stop. Pretty much the only ones dancing. They even played again after the show was over---awesome! First time I saw a band twice in the same day! The Drums were great too, so charismatic definitely got the crowd going finally. The opening acts were awesome, i'm listening to The Dewars now. All of these bands were GREAT live, i've been to alot of shows and have been let down, i sure wasnt here

    The Drums: stunning performance!

by lifesAnOcean on 10/22/10Webster Hall - New York

It's shocking that The Drums aren't as famous in the USA as they are abroad. The danceable tunes they achingly delivered me one of the highlights of the year for me. The boys can dance and make you wanna go surfin'

Could easily have earned a 5th star if only the sound at the venue had been better. Excellent performance!
