About

The Drums on Tour

For those who like their indie rock both sweet and sour, you can always count on The Drums to put on a loud, lively and emotionally powerful show. With magnetic frontman Jonny Pierce at the helm, the Brooklyn-based band has experienced a successful, if not rocky, evolution since first performing together in 2009 in NYC. The Drums have been busy on the road every single year since, even while enduring lineup shifts. Still, Pierce has always managed to bring his heart and soul to the stage, from the band's first big shows in the U.S. and across the pond in the U.K. to multiple major festival appearances at Coachella (in 2011 and 2018), Outside Lands (in 2015) and Lollapalooza (in 2011 and 2017). He continues on with The Drums name - and signature style - touring the U.S. in support of the band's fifth album, 2019's Brutalism.

The Drums in Concert

The Drums have been helping keep indie rock alive and raw since 2009, when childhood buddies Jonathan Pierce and Jacob Graham moved to Brooklyn, added drummer Connor Hanwick and guitarist Adam Kessler, and soon took the band to an international level. While their career seemed to take off rather quickly, it was actually several years in the making. Pierce and Graham first met at bible camp during their pre-teen years and hit it off with a mutual adoration for synth-pop. They started the short-lived band Elkland, in New York, but after that project dissolved, the two moved down to Florida, where the seeds for The Drums began to form. It wasn't until they relocated to Brooklyn, though, that the band took off. Their debut EP, 2009's Summertime!, caught on with the American and British press, especially the catchy surf-pop single "Let's Go Surfing." Their self-titled debut album followed the next year and peaked at No. 17 on the U.S. Heatseekers chart. Only one more year would pass before they released their sophomore album, Portamento, and took to the road for a busy world tour. But by this point, the lineup was starting to crumble. Kessler had already left the band and soon Hanwick would as well. Pierce and Graham kept the group going for 2014's Encyclopedia. Then, in 2017, Graham announced his departure, as frontman Pierce took on the full job of writing and producing The Drums' fourth album, Abysmal Thoughts. Though he's become the last remaining member of The Drums, Pierce has continued to keep the band's synth-lined aesthetic intact as his songwriting has turned more poignant and personal, especially on the 2019 album Brutalism.

    FIRE THE FOG MACHINE GUY!

    by Rickaree on 8/15/23

LOVE LOVE LOVE THE DRUMS! AND JONNY IS PURE GOLD. Band sounded amazing, Jonny has the moves and is a gifted showman and vocalist. His lyrics are on par with Ian Curtis and Morrissey. This is the second time seeing The Drums live at The Showbox in Seattle. His opener, a joke named Cold Hart was painful!! a guitar and computerized soundtrack coupled with autotune vocal made his act beyond horrible. Avoid at all cost. So, one and only criticism of The Drums show was that fog machine and lighting guys must have been on high dose mushrooms. the fog machine ran full blast the entire set and you could not really see the band at all!! such a bummer. and the lights were only from behind so you could barely see Jonny and his signature moves. I recommend that Showbox rethink the whole crew and how they light a show. anyway, Jonny signed my Money shirt and I'm pleased. Carry on!

Live Nation are crooks ruining live music.

    by Ticketmaster sucks on 8/13/23

Live Nation and TicketMaster have destroyed accessibility for folks to experience their favorite bands. They crushed small promoters who actually have passion for the industry and have strong armed their presence into every corner of the industry with forced cooperation. They are monopolistic crooks.

    Not so eventful

    by J. S. on 8/9/23

DONT get me wrong, they sound AMAZING. They’re just not engaging with the crowd at all! Kinda eventful because of that. The bass guitar was so loud I could barely hear Johnny singing. They sound great, just don’t expect something cool to happen

Amazing!my second time seeing him but THIS RIGHT HERE

    by Diamond <3 on 7/24/23

Johnny did so good! Apart from him not aging and having the funkiest dance moves it felt so easy to be present, I was in a trance and holding tears back without holding back these dance moves! I even woke up crying the next and just feeling so grateful to experience that!

    Once in a Full Moon!

    by S. G. on 7/22/23

I've been a fan since Abysmal Thoughts and was so excited to attend the show in Houston. The whole show from start to finsh was amazing. The energy in the crowd and from the band was so real. Only wish some people hadn't tried to start a mosh pit in the crowd. Aside from that, this was my favorite concert experience! Id come to another show someday ♡

    by Rob on 7/19/23

This band and the venue are both spectacular. The Van Buren is such a great place to see your favorite band because you are so close and the sound is right in your face. The band was amazing and Jonny stayed after the show to sign autographs and connect with his fans and I was able to meet him, shake his hand and thank him for over a decade of great music!
