    Color Purple - perfection

by tanya37 on 6/12/18Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

This was my 4th time seeing this show because it's my favorite!!! Pantages never disappoints and the cast this time around was simple stupendous!!!! Everyone has perfect pitch, blended well together and again brought tears to my eyes. I'll see it every time it's in town.

The singing was great!!! Everyone in the show had lovely voices but the show lacked in a lot of other places. Could have used more creativity on the set and maybe do a background change here and there. Also felt like the show was rushed the actors hurried through their lines and sometimes did not speak loud enough so that the audience could hear. For winning so many awards thought the show was going to be better

    first visit

by tyjere67 on 6/12/18Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

it was my first visit to the Pantages. I went alone. it's lovely inside for photo opps. I sat left orchestra, row G. not much of an incline and at times I had difficulty hearing; but it could have been the players microphones. Seats are old Hollywood inside the theater and I was pleased. I may next time chose a seat in the front mezzanine. The performance and the people were all equally pleasing. I parked on Selma-but wont again. Plenty of places to eat before show. Doors opened 1-hr before and theater opened approx 20 mins before show for seating. My favorites were Hell No, Too Beautiful for Words & The Color Purple. Enjoy the Theater.

    The Color Purple

by LisaBD on 6/12/18Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

Excellent. Saw it in NYC years ago and bought the CD. My kids grew up hearing the songs in the car. The LA show at the Pantages didn’t disappoint. Brought the entire family and we all thoroughly enjoyed! It was hard not to sing out loud from our seat!s!

    Not worth the hype.

by Noonewantsthosepants on 6/12/18Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

Sorely disappointed. I expected so much more. The cast had serious pipes. I mean, blasted me away on a the next to the last song. But could not act their way off a hot tub roof. I have seen better acting in high school. Not sure if the stylized direction is the fault. But I do feel they pandered to the audience and made the experience cheap.

    The Color Purple

by Zaia on 6/11/18Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I wasn't sure how the play would be interpreted from the book and the movie but it was spectacular. I enjoyed how each character was developed more in the play. I like that the props were simple and the concentration was on the characters and the acting instead. It made it more enjoyable for me not to be distracted from the props. I would and have recommended the play to all my friends and family. Thank you for a lovely day at the play.

    SMH

by 1Gina1 on 6/11/18Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

This play was a disaster. This is not the original "The Color Purple" with Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson, etc. I don't know how they figured this was worth producing because my ten yr old's elementary schools stage play was much more enjoyable than this hot mess. There was no change in scenery. We had to visualize where the next scene was taking place. No background change or anything. Just a weird fascination with wooden chairs. They seemed all over the place with no connection or flow. It just didnt make any sense. PLEASE save your money and time. During intermission my whole row got up at the same time and headed to the exit shaking our heads in disbelief. This play was awful.

Very disappointed! If you loved the movie you will hate this production there was only a few parts from the movie no original songs from the movie. They were oppressed with using chairs which was very annoying and stupid.

    Amazing show

by ConstanceK on 6/10/18Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I was told by a friend who saw this in New York that the show was a "must see". I have to agree with her. The music is outstanding and even though the subject matter is quite difficult, at the end you are cheering. The woman that played the lead was incredible, and everyone else is amazing as well. I'm still singing some of the songs and its 4 days later. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five, is because the sound at the Pantages--which is usually very good--seemed off. I was only 8 rows back and off to the right and I had a hard time hearing when they were speaking.

    Color Purple

by ADrop on 6/9/18Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I came to the play with the movie in mind. The movie was lush, vividly colorful. It took a few scenes for me to adjust to the minimalist, monochromatic set design. It was truly an actor's show. The cast was so talented. They sang with heart-centered passion. The voices were gorgeous. I did have difficulty in understanding all the words...I wanted to hear them...the songs were beautiful. I especially liked the song about God being inside and "I'm Here." The play was engaging all the way through.

    Absolutely Amazing!!!

by ChefEwing on 6/9/18Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

Color Purple is an exhibition of pure talent. The writing was excellent capturing me from the start of the play. From pain and sorrow to redemption I was allured into seeing through the eyes the main character. I was uplifted by her courage and overjoyed in her triumph.

The show was amazing, so glad I got the chance to see it. The only thing I would complain about would be audio. The road guy either didn’t care or wasn’t paying attention to the mix. Especially with the Preshow announcement, it sounded like it was only going thru the on stage monitors.

by BettJ on 6/8/18Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

The performers were outstanding. Vocals were amazing. However, it was often hard to hear dialogue. Also I was disappointed with staging and lack of scenery or scene changes. That was u an fortunate surprise.

    Color Purple...Second Visit!

by 2MuchSugah on 6/7/18Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

This was my second time seeing this musical. The music was great as I remembered from the first time seeing it,however I was a little disappointed in the characters of Sug Avery and Celie. I thought the presentation was weak. Sug was not portrayed as I remember her in the original.

The Color Purple a wonderful experience

by rocky48 on 6/6/18Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I saw The Color Purple on June 3rd at The Pantages in Hollywood, CA. The show was so amazing. The vocals were strong and the acting was powerful. The actresses playing Celie, Shug Avery and Sofia were particularly exceptional. Even with the minimal staging it was such a powerful story that they did not need all the different sets to tell the story. I highly recommend everyone see this musical.
