I love Sweet Honey in the Rock. They are sweet and their voices are smooth, like honey. The use of sign language is entertaining and appreciated. They are intelligent, talented, beautiful women. They are creative song writers and a pleasure to listen to. Your spirit will be lifted.
They were very moving. Reminded me of old spiritual songs that still need to be heard.
Wasted time. I thought it’s going to be much much better . Poor show pool voices! I was very disappointed
We follow Sweet Honey - hearing and watching them is an inspiration. I have been to numerous venues in the NY area to see them. My ideals have brought me to meet them. Carnegie Hall, Lehman Center and now Colden -Kupferberg are a few venues. If you love acapella, message music, or need to have hope pumped into your system go to see Sweet Honey and be renewed.
Honey In The Rock never disappoints! The whole show was uplifting and amazing. If you have never seen this group, it is a must see. The Kupferberg Center for the Arts is a great space with wonderful acoustics, unfortunately the actual seats could be more comfortable. Still a good space for the price point and caliber of performers they attract.
I wouldn't miss Sweet Honey in the Rock for anything! I love their sound, their show, their rapport with the audience, their energy, their dedication to music and justice. This particular concert had a few missing pieces. Two of the five musicians kept clearing their throats and guzzling water. It appeared to me that their throats needed a rest or the allergies in our area got to them. I hope their throats recover but wish it wasn't on my dime. Apparently Sweet Honey is no longer drawing a diverse audience age-wise. I looked for young people but didn't see any. What a disappointment! They bring a unique energy which I appreciate. I wonder if marketing was done at local university campuses. I also wonder if marketing was done in the deaf community. The small venue, the percussion, and the always present sign language interpreter are particularly suited to that audience. One thing I have noticed in this area is that audiences rush to the doors before the last entertainer has walked off stage after the bow. One would think we were at the Coliseum or the Scope and had to get on the road before the crowds coming out of only one driveway of a parking garage. How awkward for Sweet Honey to give most of the audience the encore for which they asked while some of you are standing in the aisles or slinking back to your seats. The American Theatre audience was by far much better than the Ferguson Center audience which Sweet Honey sang to, and mostly not with, in their second-to-last visit to the Peninsula. Even at this concert, however, I ended up sitting next to four older, white, upper middle-class folks (season ticket-holders?) who eventually put their hands together for the music. At least they came and gave Sweet Honey a chance to touch them! But I was glad that there weren't too many folks like them; a Sweet Honey concert without audience participation is a real downer. The selection of music performed was varied and showed the talents of the individuals' contributions to the sound of the group. I'm heartened by the presence of a young woman not mentioned in the program notes, Rochelle Rice. Wonderful voice; great stage presence. And the veteran performers can still belt it out; oh yes, they can. In the afterglow, I wanted to purchase their latest CD in the lobby after the show. Alas, the seller couldn't get the phone to take a charge card. My observation of her frustration led me, after more than a few minutes, to spare her, and I left with a promise to buy the CD online. Now that I'm home, however, I am better able to heed my necessarily frugal self and will bypass the purchase. I'm sad for both purchaser and seller. The experience wasn't as polished as I would have liked or expected, especially for a Sweet Honey in the Rock concert, but Sweet Honey is still Sweet Honey, and I wouldn't have missed it for anything! *Disclosure: Reviewer is white female, age 55-60, with graduate degree.
A very enjoyable and uplifting show. I would recommend it for anyone.
My first time inside this theater. I like the intimacy of the theater. I did not like the dark area in which I had to park. After seeing the original "Sweet Honey in the Rock" group, I did not care for this new group. They sound like a typical jazz ensemble.
I have quite a few Sweet Honey In The Rock albums, but this was my first time enjoying them in person. What a time I had!! I have lived in Hampton, VA for 25 years and have been to a lot of concerts This was the first time that I've been to a concert where an encore was requested and given. I am so delighted; I can do this again and again.
Loved the concert! Missed a couple of the regulars who werent there!
Sweet Honey was as sweet as they ever were. They are the voice for all seasons, as relevant as they were yesterday, dynamic today and ready for tomorrow. The added treat of mama sage, Bernice Johnson Reagon in the house created an atmosphere that was holy. Everyone present experienced Pentacost!
This was an awesome performance. Their music moves you spiritually which gives you a deeper sense of awareness when you leave. The struggle continues. Their harmony is spectacular!
All one can say is that these wemen are the best at what they do. One must thank them for their insight, wisdom, council, life & song it was a great night.
Lovely ladies with outstanding voices. Good vibes and holiday cheer which work to better the community. May we all have peace and contentment after listening to their wonderful messages.
I totally enjoyed the talented singers and musicians. Their voices were "angelic" and the lyrics were awe inspiring and thought provoking. The selections were informative as well as educational . Lovely ladies providing a service to Humanity through words and song. Thank you Sweet Honey in the Rock and Thank you NJPAC for providing the venue Greatful!
I bought the tickets for my mother and husband. My husband is an old fan and this was my mother's first experience with the group. They both loved it. They had a beautiful show that fed the soul. Their voices are their instruments and wonderful instruments they are. I'm not a big time listener, so I didn't know a lot of the songs, so most where new treasures to me and my mother. I was so impressed with the group and the mixed audience. A wonderful warming, positive experience. If you get a chance to go, GO !
The show was amazing. We had great seats, the diversity of the audience was awesome. There was a sweet warmness in the air as the powerful song filled the auditorium and the audience participation was great. I will plan to attend more shows at the Carolina Theater.
An inspiringly, inspirational, wonderful/musical evening!
Fantastic performance by Sweet Honey in the Rock. Always try to see them when they are performing in or near the carolinas. Wishing they had done a few more oldies. All the best to the best female acapella group ever!!! Love me some Sweet Honey in the Rock
