  • some great some not so great

by gigiflynn on 2/26/11Lakeland Center Youkey Theatre - LakelandRating: 3 out of 5

The really talented dancers shone or rather outshone the average and mediocre. The theatre didn't really provide adequate props for this or the Nutcracker. The corps is prestigious but the dancers in this performance were second stringers. I love the ballet and was delighted to be there. The major performers were a pleasure to watch. Keep them coming. I miss the Boston and Met where I had season tickets for years and am thrilled to have the russian company here in Lakeland/

A fabulous example of classical Russian ballet. We had three generations of admirers in our group and it was enjoyed by all.

  • Different, Still Wonderful

Whether you're new to ballet or a veteran ballet-goer, you should see this production. The dancing is world class. If you're very familiar with Swan Lake, you'll either be startled by the changes or enjoy most of them (I did). The music (taped), sets, and dancing are wonderful. Here's what's different: A jester has been added, apparently so the company could showcase one of their top male dancers. Throughout Acts I and III he did amazing leaps and spins. The ballet ends differently (I won't tell you how.) The ballet has been compressed into two acts. A choral number in Act II was cut (Swan Lake veterans call it the "Rosie O'Grady" dance). Instead of standing on a rock in Act II, Rothbart comes down to the stage and dances with Siegfried and the swans. The ethnic folk dances in Act III were done by guests at the ball, led by one of the fiancees, rather than by folk dancers in costume. The choreography was redone. There was some business with white roses that I liked and hadn't seen in other productions. In Act III, Odette tries to enter the ballroom instead of dancing in a window. There were no programs, so I can't name any of the dancers. The ballerina who played Odette/Odile had amazing extension. It was a wonderful night. Recommended!

The music was over the speakers rather than a live orchestra. However, this was fine as the performers clearly have the music perfectly memorized so they end every dance right on beat. The performance was very well done and enjoyable in all respects.

  • Poor executian

Venue is very unprepared for any show, 8 pm show started 10-15 min. late and people were still entering & talking. Sound systems is unbelievable bad . So many dancers were out of timing and I couldn't believe main actor/dancer's outof balance landing. Group was smaller in scale than any other swan lake I ever watched. I thought I was going see something magnificent since their name was Russion bale afterall. I think valley performing art center found the cheapest local , amateur group to make money . But no thanks, I am not going back to this place ever. !

  • Swan Lake overflow

by cello1 on 2/11/11Valley Performing Arts Center - NorthridgeRating: 3 out of 5

The stage was much too small for this ballet. The dancers were having to try to adjust all their moves and sometimes stumbled trying to make everything fit in the small space. We were also disappointed that there was no live orchestra.

  • Left me a little disappointed.

This performance of Swan Lake was fine, but not, in my opinion particularly special or moving. The particular disappointment was that this show did not have live music, but rather a recording. With live music I would have been much more engaged, and I think the dancers would have been as well. As it was, I didn't feel particularly engaged. One bright spot, though, was the dancer playing the jester. He was phenomenal. There were other dancers that were perfectly lovely, but not particularly memorable.

everything was great...the music, sets, costumes...and obviously the performance. I took my mother, who is a former professional ballet dancer and performed in Swan Lake, and she was equally amazed - great show - cannot say enough.

  • Absolutely breathtaking!!!

by rmdupl on 1/18/11Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

The Russian Ballet production of Swan Lake was amazing! The costumes and scenery in Act III were absolutely breathtaking!! The harpist was very gifted and left you mesmorized as the dancers unfolded the story. The only disappointment was the amount of people allowed in the theatre after the curtain was up and doors closed! Constant traffic across the upper balcony getting patrons to the other side. Three times just in my section I had to get up for people to get to their seats or lost view of the stage because of people standing in front of me. It was a disruption for the first 20 minutes of the ballet!!!

The show was fantastic. I recommend attending, if it is coming to a venue near you.

  • Hmm???

This being my first ballet, I was a bit taken aback. I loved the costumes and the lovely, graceful ladies, but the guys doing their dainty little leaps into the air, just didn't quite make it for me. But with that said, I would try a ballet again. Is there a ballet with just ladies? I can only hope for a wardrobe malfunction.

  • Disappointed on many levels...

by Leo808 on 1/18/11Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - BaltimoreRating: 2 out of 5

I was excited to see a Russian Ballet company version of Swan Lake and it was the first time that my 13-year-old was seeing it. We had box seats that the ushers didn't seem to know how to get to. They were low on programs and were allowing 1 per two guests. I was surprised to see that this production did not have a live orchestra. I will call ahead next time. I felt the costumes were bland and cheap looking and was frankly bored during the first act. The principal dancers were fantastic and loved the connection between the swan queen and the princt...so fluid and effortless. Same for the dancer who portrayed Rothbart. Some of the corps dancers were on the older side and not very inspiring. This were also two intermissions that people were confused by but that's not the productions fault. Overall was dissapointed and my seats were horrible.

The dancers were not synchronized well in the first act. I had better expectations for the Russian state ballet.

Outstanding performance, excellent seats, a very enjoyable night.

  • Swan Lake was O.K.

by TimH67 on 1/17/11Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - BaltimoreRating: 3 out of 5

O.K. was about the best I could give it. There was no live ensemble accompanying the on stage performers. So they were dancing along to a CD basically. The interaction between the dancers and the musicians helps to allow a piece to live and breathe. This major factor was lost.

The State Ballet Theatre of Russia presented a wonderful and magnificent evening of the arts with its rendition of "Swan Lake." By far, this has been the best production of the arts I have ever seen.

  • Gorgeous incredible music and ballet

by shilohandpugface on 1/10/11Times Union Ctr Perf Arts Moran Theater - JacksonvilleRating: 5 out of 5

If you have never seen ballet before or listened to gorgeous classical music, Swan Lake is a must. The dancers were incredible and athletic. The scenery was stage worthy and the dancers costumes were so beautiful. The second act was my favorite with the traditional ballet costumes, all in white. Each dancer mirrored the other in grace and beauty. The main female dancer was outstanding. The dances with her male counterpart were so smooth and graceful and the crescendo of the music to the lifts brought tears to my eyes. The only negative experience with this performance is that there weren't enough programs. I did not and could not get one. I am always interested in the names of dancers, performers, singers, and the orchestra. I asked every usher there and no one had a book left. Too bad about that.

  • Swan Lake was mesmerizing!

by trulee on 1/10/11Times Union Ctr Perf Arts Moran Theater - JacksonvilleRating: 4 out of 5

The ballet was beautifully performed. It was interesting, however, that 4 different ballerinas played the lead in the 4 different acts. It didn't take anything away from the experience, just interesting. I will say that I saw Swan Lake performed by the Bolshoi Ballet Company about 6 years ago, and this company was not quite as good.
