About

SUZANNE VEGA IN CONCERT:

In the late '80s, singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega carved a small but potent niche for herself with a relaxed, poetic brand of alt-pop. Nuanced, witty songs like "Tom's Diner" and "Luka" drew heavily on folk traditions, earning her popularity in alternative circles that she continues to enjoy today. A humble, genuine performer, Vega's soothing voice and smart songwriting will be front and center as she embarks on a 2014 tour in support of her eighth studio album Tales from the Real of the Queen of Pentacles.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

LA-born, New York-raised Suzanne Vega was a precocious young talent, beginning to write poetry at age nine and penning her first song by age 14. While majoring in literature at Bard College, she frequently traveled to Manhattan to perform in small venues and participate in the songwriter cooperative Fast Folk. She became one of the first artists from the Fast Folk family to make it big when she landed a major label contract in 1984, releasing her self-titled debut a year later. The album was a critical and commercial success, setting the stage for a string of acclaimed releases that included Solitude Standing (1987) and Days of Open Hand (1990). On the road in 2014 in support of her eighth album, fans can expect to hear some much-awaited new material alongside favorites like "Tom's Diner" and "In Liverpool."

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Suzanne is an amazing performer; she is so personable and comfortable with her audience. I almost felt like she was in my living room. Her voice continues to be strong and unique; she hasn't aged at all.”

"Suzanne has definitely got stamina...she took no breaks, her voice was remarkable, and her story-telling added to the enjoyment. She gave a walk down memory lane encore (Luka, Tom's Diner, Calypso, + one other) and played the guitar with energy."

"Incredible show. Once again Suzanne Vega impressed with her simple poetic lyrics and quirky folk/rock/pop. Her guitarist is amazing!"

Great venue, but not enough Suzanne Vega

    by VegaFans2 on 5/2/12Birchmere - Alexandria

My wife and I are big Suzanne Vega fans from way back. We saw her in 1990 at the Kennedy Center. We had never heard of Duncan Sheik and figured he was just the "opening band". We got there early and got a great table right up front. So it was a big disappointment to discover that this was really the Duncan Sheik show, with a few Suzanne Vega songs thrown in. She did maybe 5 songs from her albums, and 4 more from a play she wrote (DS did the music.) The show started at 7:30, and lights were on and we were out of there by 9:30.

    Suzanne Vega was awesome!

by seaver on 11/24/11Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - Washington

I very much enjoyed this show. I had not seen her in concert since the late 80s/early 90s and I would see her again soon. Her music is timeless and I loved the new tunes I didn't know as well as the old. The venue--the Historic Synagogue in DC--was special. I recommend getting there early when the doors open to get good seats, which we managed to do. Overall, a great show!

    Underwhelming

by Vegafan on 11/23/11Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - Washington

Suzanne Vega is a fabulous songwriter and studio artist, but the live performance was quite underwhelming. There seemed to be no energy, and going through the motions. Maybe not feeling the best, or other things going on. I will likely not pay for another Vega concert, but will continue to support her recordings. Gerry Leonard, however, was amazing. I would love to see him as main act in the future. I will not return to this venue - poor sight lines, uncomfortable seating, and poor acoustics, too.

Suzanne Vega was great at the I&6th

by HeleneDC on 11/21/11Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - Washington

The setting was very cosy; the acoustics great. Suzanne brought many of her classics and some new songs, accompanied by an amazing electric guitar player. Before most songs, she told us what had prompted her to write them. Some of those stories were really funny. My daughter and I had a pleasant surprise for the afternoon before the concert. Through our ticketmaster purchase, we won tickets for the songwriter workshop led by Suzanne. Both the afternoon and the evening were unforgettable. If an artist I like comes to the I&6th synagogue, I'll certainly go and watch. If Suzanne Vega ever returns there, I'll be there!

    Suzanne Vega is extraordinary!!!!!!

    by emilycat2 on 11/21/11Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - Washington

What a joy to see and hear Suzanne Vega!!! She does not come to DC too often, to say the least, so it was a treasure to see her. This glorious historic synagogue came to life when she stepped onto the stage. Everyone in our party was utterly delighted with her choice of songs and how well she performed them. Her band mate, I forget his name, was also terrific! I can't wait for her to come again!!!

Always good to see this wonderful performer

by texandrews on 11/21/11Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - Washington

This was a quirky venue that would be good for jazz, but it put a damper on the crowd and I think kept the energy level a bit low (and the crowd skewed older anyway...). I have a feeling it affected her a bit. Her backup guitarist was amazing, but I wish both had coordinated a little bit more on what was possible with just 2 people (some canned effects were just too much---for instance, drum effects work best with club, techno, rave or hip hop forms). The set list was comfortable, but pandered to the "favorites" expectations of the audience a bit too much---her songbook is so rich that one wants to hear more of it. I would say it was a "B" night for her---which means a superb night for most performers. But the show didn't compare with the one she did at Ram's Head Live in Baltimore a couple of years ago, which was one of the best concerts by anyone I've ever experienced over 40 years.

Spectacular performance in a wonderful venue

by Waif on 11/21/11Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - Washington

Concert exceeded my expectations. A great selection of her work. She has wonderful stage presence, and the stories that gave rise to some of the songs were really interesting.

    The New Suzanne

by puddinghead on 2/1/11Montalvo - Saratoga

I have seen Ms. Vega many times in the 80's and 90's, but this is the first time I had seen her in over 15 years. I didn't think it was possible, but her voice has perhaps even gotten better. There is a different energy about her...mature, but not old...more passionate than ever. Her new interpretations of her old material are truly amazing. If you are even a moderate fan of Suzanne Vega, I highly recommend seeing her live. She has a way of making each performance feel intimate and relaxed. The electric guitar accompanying her was truly amazing as well. I really really liked the trio. I would love to see the 3 of them perform again and again. Rock on SuzyV!

Suzanne Vega at Montalvo - Stunning Performance

    by 1MrMike on 2/1/11Montalvo - Saratoga

The Suzanne Vega Trio took the stage at Villa Montalvo in Saratoga, CA, and it was like she was in my living room. With Suzanne on vocals and guitar, plus the bass player and electric guitarist, she played her classic songs I have listened to for decades. The sound was crisp and lively, there were new twists on old songs, and she topped it off with some great new songs from a play she is doing in NY. Unlike some artists, she did not phone her performance in. Suzanne cares about the fans - she interacted and told jokes throughout. She was fully present, through and through.

I loved the performance and she seems to be very approachable. Her voice hasn't changed through the years and all the repertoire she sang sounded awesame.

    Suzanne Vega in Alexandria VA

by Jiyuno on 8/5/10Birchmere - Alexandria

Her last full album won the Grammy for best produced album, but this tour she's paired up with an excellent lead guitaritst and bassist for an uncluttered presentation. She was very chatty and the venue initimate- it felt like a conversation with an excellent poet and two artists.

    Non - Plus - Ultra

by BigSpace on 8/5/10Birchmere - Alexandria

Suzanne Vega is the non plus ultra of singer/songwriters. She is without peer.I know that in a world full of hype not many have understood or will understand her art.I accept that.I feel privileged to be privy to such an extraordinary vessel. Long live Suzanne Vega.

Great music, show was a little short

    by ur2x9798 on 8/5/10Birchmere - Alexandria

Suzanne played somewhat stripped-down versions of her prior hits, including some from her original album that is celebrating it's 25-year anniversary. She was accompanied by a bass guitarist and lead guitarist, both of whom looked out of place standing next to her. Suzanne looked like I would expect her to be at work next to me in my office the next day, while the other guitarists were more eccentric and flashy. Volume levels for the guitarists were too high at times and seemed to overpower Suzanne. She did only play for about an hour and 20 minutes though so we were done by 9:40 that evening, which was somewhat disappointing with the size of her collection from which she could have played. I would have expected that from maybe a band with only a couple of albums. But, all in all I really like her music and her voice sounded great.

Perfect venue to see Suzanne Vega

by fergjones on 8/5/10Birchmere - Alexandria

This was my first time to see Suzanne and the first time at the Birchmere. What a fantastic night. It was both inimate and edgy. I was blown away with "Blood Makes Noise".. so raw and intense and then like the diverse artist she is, Suzanne flows into a smooth renditionof Caramel. Amazing in every sense of the word. I'll definitely go back to the Birchmere for more shows. It's a great room!
