About

Alone in the dark, with little more than her celluloid memories, Norma Desmond remains what she has always been — the greatest star of all.

This spring, she will reclaim the spotlight once more.

Glenn Close returns to Broadway in the tour de force performance that earned her the Tony Award for Best Actress – and a place in Broadway history – in Sunset Boulevard.

Featuring a 40-piece orchestra, the largest in Broadway history, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award®-winning masterwork of dreams and desire in the land called Hollywood comes to the Palace Theatre for a limited engagement following a sold out run in London’s West End.

“ONE OF THE GREAT STAGE PERFORMANCES OF THIS CENTURY! YOU HAVE TO – AND I MEAN HAVE TO – SEE IT IN PERSON!”  -  Ben Brantley, The New York Times

“WITH ONE LOOK GLENN CLOSE BRINGS DOWN THE HOUSE!   A performance gutsier and more gripping than ever.  IT LEAVES YOU THUNDERSTRUCK.  Your heart somehow sinks and beats faster all at once.” -Peter Marks, The Washington Post

“THE APPLAUSE ECHOES LONG AFTER THE CURTAIN FALLS!” – Entertainment Weekly

    Sunset Boulevard

by Pacor on 4/16/17Palace Theatre New York - New York

The cast was great, especially Ms. Close as was the orchestra but the story has not held up well and the staging took away from the glamour of the show that I saw 29 years ago. Also the Palace theater is huge and if you sit upstairs to avoid the price gauging you have a minuscule view of what is going on which also takes away from the show. If you have an interest in a bygone time you will appreciate some of the references. Not Sir Weber's best and far from the best that Broadway currently has to offer. Only for those who must see Ms. Close.

Glenn Close Triumphant As Ever in Sunset Blvd.

by RobbRJ on 4/15/17Palace Theatre New York - New York

This revival confirms my view that Sunset Boulevard is Lord Lloyd Webber's finest score. Although I saw the superb Betty Buckley in the original London production over two decades ago, it could not compare to the current one, with Glenn Close reprising her Tony-winning turn as the tortured, demented ex-silent film queen Norma Desmond. Michael Xavier, Siobhan Dillon, and Fred Johanson also performed brilliantly in their respective roles as the doomed Joe Gillis, Betty Schaefer, and Desmond's sycophant Max von Mayerling (based in large part upon Erich von Stroheim, who created the role in Billy Wilder's original 1950 Paramount film noir drama). Kristen Blodgette, who was the associate musical director of the original Broadway production, conducted a crack 40-piece onstage orchestra (the largest on Broadway in recent memory) which elicited the full dimensions of the orchestrations by Lloyd Webber and David Cullen. Lonny Price, a protege of the legendary Hal Prince (director of Lloyd Webber's Evita and The Phantom of the Opera), has expertly taken the helm of this prodcution, and hopefully the show will be recorded for future telecast.

    Glenn Close is FABULOUS!

by Queud on 4/13/17Palace Theatre New York - New York

Sunset Boulevard is one of my favorite shows, and this production did not disappoint. Glenn Close was wonderful as Norma Desmond. Michael Xavier was a great Joe and Fred Johanson was a marvelous Max. The show was beautifully staged and the entire cast made this a wonderful night of theatre. Don't miss it!

by SuzyQE1 on 4/12/17Palace Theatre New York - New York

We loved the "new" Sunset Blvd! The stage was simple & didn't distract from the actors. The music was wonderful! The voices, whether speaking or singing, were clear & showed such emotional strength! Loved the whole experience!

So disappointing on one level; good on another

by NoTheater on 4/12/17Palace Theatre New York - New York

Ms. Close was so much better 22 years old. Her voice is weak now, and her acting is way over the top. At one point, she looked like a maniacal witch instead of a sad, lonely, forgotten actress. It saddens me to say this because she is a great actress. Michael Xavier was really good and so was Ms. Dillon and Mr. Johanson. The orchestra was lush. But to spend $299 on the ticket just wasn't worth it. I would have preferred to see the understudy in the role of Norma Desmond rather than Ms. Close.

    sunset blvd mediocrity

by Anonymous on 4/12/17Palace Theatre New York - New York

my daughter and son in law and I were all extremely disappointed... our seats were great and glen close did her best which was good enough but her supporting role ( xavier ) seemed like he was an actor they had pulled from a small town play...missing notes, not projecting, poorly acting and not giving his energy...mediocre!! We found the chorus lacking, predictable and bla... overall, we were glad to see glen close but had she not been in the production, it would have been unbearable....wish we had decided to see a drama, or spend the day in the sun in the park...

    Sunset Boulevard Excellence

by Babydogmickey on 4/11/17Palace Theatre New York - New York

Glenn Close in Sunset Boulevard was absolutely amazing. The entire cast was amazing. The conductor Kristen Blodgette, and her orchestra, on stage, for the entire production was fantastic to hear and see. It is a must for all people to see Glenn Close in this production.

    Phenomenal!

by ParkAvenue6 on 4/11/17Palace Theatre New York - New York

I make it a point to travel to NYC each year and always attend as many plays as possible. But I have to say I have never experienced the same thrill as I had seeing Sunset Boulevard. I cannot find one bad thing to say about it. It was amazing to see Glenn Close reprise the role she was made for. I particularly loved the glittery gowns she wore. The audience response after her songs "With One Look" and “As If We Never Said Goodbye" just rocked the theater! The roles of Max, Joe and Betty were all played perfectly as well. I was very surprised to see the orchestra on stage and was curious to see how that was going to work out but it was perfectly incorporated into the show. I was also happy to see the orchestra conducted by a woman - Kristen Blodgette. I can't think of one bad thing to say about this show. So, if you get the opportunity to see a Broadway show, put this one on the top of your list.

    Glenn Close is fabulous.

by DHampton1 on 4/11/17Palace Theatre New York - New York

Norma Desmond as a 40-something actress living in a dream world is one thing... Norma as a 70 year old actress believing she can play a teen-aged ingénue is something totally different. Creepy, so sad, and wonderful all at the same time. The largest orchestra on Broadway in over 80 years is something to hear. The supporting cast is strong. It's a must see.

    Not worth it

by Dani1426 on 4/11/17Palace Theatre New York - New York

We went to see this because Glenn Close is such a great actress, and that is where her talent stopped. She could not sing at all. It was so bad that it brought down the amazing talent of her costars. She was flat and airy and it was almost like she could not get the phrases out. The story was a tad dated but it was not hard to follow. The other actors and actresses were absolutely amazing. I just wish they casted someone else instead of Glenn Close.

    FABULOUS!

by GOTFORD9227 on 4/11/17Palace Theatre New York - New York

FABULOUS doesn't begin to describe this production! From Michael Xavier, who nailed Joe Gillis, Siobhan Dillon, who was absolutely delightful, Fred Johansson, WOW!! What an incredible voice and range and the INCREDIBLE ORCHESTRA! Last but most definitely not least, Ms. Close who is the ONE AND ONLY, Norma Desmond! We are so happy that we had the opportunity to see Ms. Close and Sunset Boulevard. BRAVO to the entire cast! Will now cross this off of our bucket list! THANK YOU!!
