Steve Martin & Martin Short on Tour

As two titans of comedy, Steve Martin and Martin Short have conquered film, television, and the stage in the course of their long, dazzling careers. But the live shows that grew out of both their friendship and their undeniable comedic chemistry create something special enough to stand out even among the many achievements of these two show-biz veterans.

In 2015, they worked up a show that combined both of their quirky gifts and started taking it around the country. Even more people got a share of the laughs when one show was filmed for the 2018 Netflix special An Evening You'll Forget for the Rest of Your Life, where Short and Martin joke, jab, and jibe with each other and inject a little music into the mix as well. Martin showed off his Grammy-winning banjo prowess and Short displayed his Tony-winning vocal chops.

Later that year, the pair announced a new tour: Now You See Them, Soon You Won't. It presented an evening of all-new material and reunited them with Steve's Grammy-winning bluegrass compatriots — the Steep Canyon Rangers — for a couple of hot-picking musical moments in the bargain.

Steve Martin & Martin Short Background

Steve Martin debuted his offbeat brand of stand-up comedy in the 1960s, when he first reached a wide audience via the TV shows of the Smothers Brothers and Sonny & Cher. His appearances on Saturday Night Live in the mid '70s helped him become one of the most successful stand-up comedians on the planet. His idiosyncratic, often absurdist style translated to sold-out arena shows and platinum albums.

In short order he became a film star, with movies like The Jerk and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. It was on the 1986 film Three Amigos that he first worked with Martin Short, who had become famous for his outrageous characters and sketch comedy mastery on SCTV and SNL earlier in the '80s.

Short went on to plenty of big films himself, and the two teamed up again in 1991's Father of the Bride as well as its 1995 sequel. Short became a Broadway star in the '90s with shows like The Goodbye Girl and Little Me, and he inhabited the classic character Jiminy Glick in the '00s for his Comedy Central series Primetime Glick. But for all the many accomplishments lining both their legacies, when Martin and Short come together for their live performances, they create an utterly unique comedic force.

  • Not Much of a Show

by Daflabear on 9/11/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 2 out of 5

As much as I really have enjoyed these two great Comic actors through the years, it was a pretty lackluster show and I cannot recommend spending the $$$$ on it. Catch Martin Short when he performs on his own and you will get a much better show. Steve was all about the banjo, if you like that facet of his talent you are in luck. Otherwise, pretty lackluster show. Of course, maybe the drunks bounding up and down from their seats to the "bar" and back found it entertaining. Sadly, my wife and I were bored. Lazy, lazy effort.

  • a big disappointment!

    by doubletrouble2 on 9/11/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 1 out of 5

The show was soooo short ( no pun intended). Martin Short is still funny & canbe spontaneous - Steve Martin is barely funny & played his banjo too much! If we wanted to see a music act, then we could have bought tickets for one - however, this was billed as "a conversation" with the 2 of them & that was not what we got. Although Martin is very talented, we did not expect a bluegrass concert. Way too much money for such a short, unfunny show.

  • Ok, not great!.

    by Theatergoer2013 on 9/11/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 3 out of 5

They played archived video footage that was entertaining but that was more interesting than the live show. Steve Martin's several banjo songs were blah. Lots of guests headed for the bathroom/snack line.

  • Steve Martin and Martin Short were amazing

    by jeanthebean7 on 9/11/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

What an incredible night. I had always wanted to see Steve Martin in concert and this was even better than I imagined because I got to see him and Martin Short tell stories, sing songs, and be just plain funny. My husband and I had an amazing time. We love comedy and these are two comedic legends we could not miss. So glad we did this.

  • Martin and Martin were FANTASTIC

by CindySuefromKalamazoo on 9/11/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

We all loved the show. We laughed through the whole thing, except when Steve and his band were playing banjo. But, that part was great too. Loved them doing skits together, loved them separate, loved the old clips. All in all a terrific show. Would go again!

  • Steve & Martin - forgettable!

    by Stevefan1 on 9/11/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 2 out of 5

When I heard about this pairing, I was thrilled. Two legends of comedy on the same bill. Short with a diverse range of characters and Martin, well, he's Steve Martin!!!! The brief filmed just illustrated what amazing talents these two are. Unfortunately, they completely wasted a brief 90 minutes. It was billed as a "conversation" and when seeing the set (2 lounge chairs) I thought, OK, this could be interesting, I suppose. I saw Al Pacino last year where he just casually spoke to a moderator and it was brilliant!! They really only used the chairs for about a 10 minute segment of chit chat that seemed genuinely off the cuff. The rest of the show wasted time on a lot of pretend insults of each other, an audience participation piece with 3 drunks brought on stage to do the 3 Amigos salute and to facilitate a costume change, a filmed segment of a Martin appearance on the tonight show which was hilarious, but I didn't pay to watch film clips I could see at home. The only saving grace was Steve Martin's bluegrass band and a touching tribute that Steve did for Robin Williams on a solo banjo piece. To cap off the evening (it seemed like it had just got started), they end with a shtick piece about being contractually obligated to do 5 more minutes. Finally, I think a contributing factor was that the venue is WAY too big for this type of show. Indeed, it was a full house, but would have been better served in a theater setting over 2 -3 shows. But I suppose the economics of greed were too strong to turn down the opportunity to fill a cavernous concrete shell for a theatrical piece. Very, very disappointed.

  • My Tummy Still Hurts From the Laughing!!!

by LaughterAficionado on 9/11/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

From the beginning of ther show with all of those fond, laughable moments of these two stars throughout the past 20-30 years to the very end we laughed till tears were running down our faces and our tummies hurt from all the laughter. Wished the screens were bigger or there were more close-ups because from where I sat, the stars were very small and I relied on the big screens for my visual of the performance. Thought my husband would bust his gut over Martin Short's bagpiper bit. As a bagpiper he has often had to "perform" using his nose when he meets someone who doesn't know what a bagpipe sounds like and unfortunately, his is nowhere around at the time. Loved Steve Martin's recollections with Martin Short and "The Hollywood Insult" bit, plus his banjo playing is superb - the group accompanying him was terrific as well.

It was great. Do not think I have ever heard my husband laugh that much!

  • Entertaining but slow

    by AKF1 on 9/11/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 3 out of 5

The show was ok, a good night out. Funny at times but not enough. It dragged at times. I didn't know what to expect, both men are so talented. I guess I expected to be entertained, to laugh a lot. I did not expect a bluegrass band.

  • It was a bit stupid and expensive

    by applejedi1 on 9/11/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 3 out of 5

A combination of videos of past glories and lots of reminiscences and riffs on Steve Martin's art collection punctuated by some nice bluegrass music which was really the highlight of the evening. For $60 I could have said it was fun to sit in on Steve and Martin riffing off the audience (you can substitute the "f"s for "p"s and it works both ways). For $144 I kind of expected something a bit better on the comedy side, like, oh, COMEDY. Maybe a sketch or two rather than the videos. The tribute song to Robin Williams was kind of ironic since this was the venue that he missed with the heart attack and then came back a year later and killed, with everyone leaving the building weeping and gasping for air. Not on this night, buddies. The comparison wasn't intended but it was there for people who pay for comedy down here. Steve Martin's one great story about meeting Russell Brand was that he said, going out of a party: "I was just going out and you're just coming in" and Brand quipped: "It's a metaphor." I wish I had paid to see Brand. Hard Rock Live is still a terrible venue for watching comedy events. It's built like a hockey rink, not an amphitheater. Seats on the risers point to center floor, not the stage. Floor seats outside of the first two sections are far enough away that you're watching the TV screens for $144. Spend the money, CASINO, to put riser seats on the floor so people can SEE.
