Steve Martin & Martin Short on Tour

As two titans of comedy, Steve Martin and Martin Short have conquered film, television, and the stage in the course of their long, dazzling careers. But the live shows that grew out of both their friendship and their undeniable comedic chemistry create something special enough to stand out even among the many achievements of these two show-biz veterans.

In 2015, they worked up a show that combined both of their quirky gifts and started taking it around the country. Even more people got a share of the laughs when one show was filmed for the 2018 Netflix special An Evening You'll Forget for the Rest of Your Life, where Short and Martin joke, jab, and jibe with each other and inject a little music into the mix as well. Martin showed off his Grammy-winning banjo prowess and Short displayed his Tony-winning vocal chops.

Later that year, the pair announced a new tour: Now You See Them, Soon You Won't. It presented an evening of all-new material and reunited them with Steve's Grammy-winning bluegrass compatriots — the Steep Canyon Rangers — for a couple of hot-picking musical moments in the bargain.

Steve Martin & Martin Short Background

Steve Martin debuted his offbeat brand of stand-up comedy in the 1960s, when he first reached a wide audience via the TV shows of the Smothers Brothers and Sonny & Cher. His appearances on Saturday Night Live in the mid '70s helped him become one of the most successful stand-up comedians on the planet. His idiosyncratic, often absurdist style translated to sold-out arena shows and platinum albums.

In short order he became a film star, with movies like The Jerk and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. It was on the 1986 film Three Amigos that he first worked with Martin Short, who had become famous for his outrageous characters and sketch comedy mastery on SCTV and SNL earlier in the '80s.

Short went on to plenty of big films himself, and the two teamed up again in 1991's Father of the Bride as well as its 1995 sequel. Short became a Broadway star in the '90s with shows like The Goodbye Girl and Little Me, and he inhabited the classic character Jiminy Glick in the '00s for his Comedy Central series Primetime Glick. But for all the many accomplishments lining both their legacies, when Martin and Short come together for their live performances, they create an utterly unique comedic force.

  • Terrible!

I didn't know this was going to be a show where two famous comedians discuss how great they are! They basically interviewed eachother. I could've gotten all of that information from articles and books. I wanted to see a comedy show! I think that the premise of this show should have been described. I wouldn't have bought tickets if I knew it wasn't going to be a comedy show. Total waste of good money. Steve and Martin didn't even seem like they wanted to be there!

  • Steve Martin and Martin Short a disappointment

by Cindymrn on 6/23/11The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

At over $70 a ticket for our family of four, I do not feel like we got value for our money at this show. A good portion of the show was watching film clips, another portion was advertisement for books and music CD's. Steve and Martin seemed annoyed to be there and although there were some funny moments, there were many uncomfortable and silent moments as well. Folks around us were not laughing either. We left feeling like we had paid lots of money for a fine meal and got bad service and cold food. We attend shows and events frequently and in fact saw Steve Martin and his banjo band at Ravinia last year. Paid a lot loss and got an amazing show. This was a huge disappointment. The TWIX commercial at the start was pretty low too.

  • SNL Reunion Worth It

To see these two on stage together was amazing! Hilarious, warm, nostalgic! Absolutely worth the flight

  • These guys might have a future in Show Business

by TZsurreal on 6/22/11The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Steve Martin and Martin Short have known each other for 30 years. The timing with which they interact is impeccable. You can tell they know each other very well. Marty sang, Steve played banjo, they sang together, there were video clips, Marty dressed up as Jiminy Glick and did a bit. They even took audience questions, although this segment could have been executed a little better. Nevertheless, these are iconic superstars who delivered the goods. If they schedule a tour, don't miss them!

  • martin short stole the show

    by bigfan4ever on 6/22/11The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I couldn't stop laughing. I went thinking it was goin to be a Steve Martin show. And Martin Short stole the show making laugh so hard I cried. I forgot how good he is.

  • Very Stupid Indeed!

    by JBradley58 on 6/22/11The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 1 out of 5

The best moments were the video highlights from Mr Martin's and Short's illustrious careers. The conversation onstage was utterly forgettable and inane

  • Sometimes stupid can be funny.

by GhostNote on 6/22/11The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 1 out of 5

Waste of time and money. Glick saved the day. Old footage, a song Short performed on Letterman, a song Martin played to tell us he has a Banjo CD, this is not live Comedy.

  • They are truly pro's!!

Although it wasn't as much knee slapping non -stop laughter, the two have a great repoire With each other. They are amazing entertainers-- That do more than just tell jokes. It was a pleasure to watch and listen.

interesting to hear these two performers talk. Not as funny probably as a stand up show, but still many fans throughout and it felt special to see these two on stage.

  • Awesome!

    by N11duski on 6/22/11The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

It was like I was at a party and got to eavesdrop on a conversation between my two good friends, Steve and Marty....or as I like to call them; Steve Martin Short. At times, Steve seemed to feel uncomfortable about the whole idea but that was probably just some insecurity about holding a conversation in front of a theatre full of strangers, especially since rumor has it that he's not great with strangers. And this fact was unfortunately brought up as the very first question by some woman who apparently has passed Steve in the street several times and wondered aloud why he wouldn't ever say "hello" to her. I think I would ignore her too! I wanted to boo her question, but I was afraid people would think I was booing Steve. Marty was able to overcome uncomfortable spots with his quick witt to fill in gaps caused by stupid audience questions. Clips were shown from the past along with an appearance by Jiminy Glick which were all very enjoyable. A bed was rolled on stage so Steve could take a nap during Marty's song about the happily departed Bin Laden. Overall, it was extremely entertaining to watch these two terribly clever and entertaining fellows. I wouldn't hesitate to buy tickets over and over again to see these two in what turned out to be not a very stupid conversation at all.

  • Stupid but a bore!

by jrjmutuel on 6/22/11The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 1 out of 5

My wife and I attend this performance and the most entertaining part were the video clips. Steve Martin seemed totally disengaged. Martin Short at least atetmpted to humor the audience.

  • Great show, idiotic audience questions

by ChiChica on 6/22/11The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Martin and Short were great. Entertaining, informative, revealing stories not heard before about the start of their respective careers. I particularly enjoyed Martin explaining comedic theory. The good vibes came to a screeching halt when the audience was permitted to ask unvetted questions. One woman (a former New Yorker) took the opportunity to be rude to Martin. Another self-servingly requested that Short sing a birthday song for her son. A third, oddly, asked that Martin step in as wedding host for an audience member, with that person's own father sitting right there in the audience. If they repeat this show, I suggest the audience questions be selected in advance after being pre-screened. The guys build up a great vibe with laughter and thoughtful discussion, only to have it derailed by those who took the mic after them.

  • Steve Martin & Martin Short were fantastic!

    by Lucky6786 on 6/22/11The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I, being a large fan of Steve Martin and also enjoying Martin Short, thoroughly enjoyed this performance. I have always wanted to see Steve do stand-up, but he quit when I was very young. This fulfilled my dream of seeing him perform. I enjoyed that they both included their musical talents in the show as well. Thank you to both of them for the entertainment.

  • Steve & Marty Were Awesome

by Zumbie on 6/22/11The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Wish this could have lasted longer to hear more tales of days gone by from both. Would even go see this again as they may talk about a few new things each time. I liked the clips from shows and movies.

  • Truly funny

    by Av8rx on 6/22/11The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Steve and Martin are funny without even trying. Would live to see a stand up routine. I was surprised that the questions from the audience were so dull, especially since it was a Chicago audience.

  • Unfortunate

by Gypsypix on 6/22/11The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

Can I get my money back? I should have taken the show title literally, as the performance was indeed Very Stupid. And what I mean by that is Not Funny. The only exception was Martin Short's brief appearance as Jiminy Glick interviewing Steve Martin. The majority of the show was just the two of them, sitting in arm chairs side by side, recalling encounters with other famous people. It was like watching an episode of Inside the Actors Studio. And that was not entertaining or what I expected to see. Being a big fan of both mens' work, it was sincerely disappointing.

  • by tamazam on 6/22/11The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

Both of these comedians are typically hilarious. My family just found this improv not a strong format for them. It felt more like the Johnny Carson show than a stage act. Some good laughs, but my expectations were higher.

  • It was OK for die hard fans

by BilWithOneL on 6/22/11The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

I love both these guys but am a huge fan who knows their reputations. It was a pleasure to see them chat on stage and watch the old clips. The worst part of the show, unfortunately, was the Question and Answer session at the end with the audience. Most every question was awkward and left me leaving feeling foolish that I attended. I am not sure the motivation of some of the questions from the audience. "When you lived near me in NY and walked by me on the street, why did you not say 'hi'". Again, I already know Steve's reputation. Not one question about Damages, Picasso at..., or Novocain. I guess I am more critical of the audience than the show.

  • Steve Martin and Martin Short in Chgo

by topdocrg on 6/22/11The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

It was a rare treat to see those two together and LIVE! However, the chemistry seemed a little off and Steve, in particular, did not seem to be having a good time and kind of phoned it in at times!
