Steve Martin & Martin Short on Tour

As two titans of comedy, Steve Martin and Martin Short have conquered film, television, and the stage in the course of their long, dazzling careers. But the live shows that grew out of both their friendship and their undeniable comedic chemistry create something special enough to stand out even among the many achievements of these two show-biz veterans.

In 2015, they worked up a show that combined both of their quirky gifts and started taking it around the country. Even more people got a share of the laughs when one show was filmed for the 2018 Netflix special An Evening You'll Forget for the Rest of Your Life, where Short and Martin joke, jab, and jibe with each other and inject a little music into the mix as well. Martin showed off his Grammy-winning banjo prowess and Short displayed his Tony-winning vocal chops.

Later that year, the pair announced a new tour: Now You See Them, Soon You Won't. It presented an evening of all-new material and reunited them with Steve's Grammy-winning bluegrass compatriots — the Steep Canyon Rangers — for a couple of hot-picking musical moments in the bargain.

Steve Martin & Martin Short Background

Steve Martin debuted his offbeat brand of stand-up comedy in the 1960s, when he first reached a wide audience via the TV shows of the Smothers Brothers and Sonny & Cher. His appearances on Saturday Night Live in the mid '70s helped him become one of the most successful stand-up comedians on the planet. His idiosyncratic, often absurdist style translated to sold-out arena shows and platinum albums.

In short order he became a film star, with movies like The Jerk and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. It was on the 1986 film Three Amigos that he first worked with Martin Short, who had become famous for his outrageous characters and sketch comedy mastery on SCTV and SNL earlier in the '80s.

Short went on to plenty of big films himself, and the two teamed up again in 1991's Father of the Bride as well as its 1995 sequel. Short became a Broadway star in the '90s with shows like The Goodbye Girl and Little Me, and he inhabited the classic character Jiminy Glick in the '00s for his Comedy Central series Primetime Glick. But for all the many accomplishments lining both their legacies, when Martin and Short come together for their live performances, they create an utterly unique comedic force.

  • Two of the funniest men in the business

Excellent show, Didn't know what to expect, but the bits together were very funny, Martin's banjo playing and Bluegrass band were unexpected pleasant surprises. Great overall show.

  • Comedy may not be pretty but it should be funny

by JudyBatBat on 9/10/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 2 out of 5

Was expecting a full comedy show and much of it was not funny. Steve Martin is a great banjo artist and would prefer a banjo concert when I buy tickets for a banjo concert. Would have preferred some old comedy routines from Steve than the Banjo. Comments putting down having to play at the Hard Rock are also not funny they are just condescending. Martin Short was the better part of the show. Liked the open forum living room setting at first then it seemed staged (not sure if it was) Show was better than poor but I know several people walked out. Encore should have been an encore not a mediocre song about encores. Show needed a wild a crazy guy with some cruel shoes.

  • Once in a lifetime opportunity...

    by Blackhawks18 on 9/10/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

To see two of the greats. They obviously are great friends and they put on a great show. Martin Short was hilarious and Ste Martin played the straight guy perfectly. It was almost like Reiner and Brooks. Highly recommend

  • The Martins were very funny!

  • A fan of Short and Martin? You'll love it!

    by Miami1960 on 9/10/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

Not for fans of modern, foul mouthed, in your face comics. These guys are subtle (at times), make many references to each other's work and careers, with Short playing the Jester and Steve Martin playing the King. The segments with Steve's Bluegrass band were great. A hilarious segment was Steve playing ventriloquist with Marty as the "dummy", Jiminy Glick ... It made me go back and watch all the Glick Videos on Youtube. I thought it would be two separate stand up routines, but instead they were onstage together through most of the show, giving each other a bit of solo time. These guys love each other, at least in a genuine, fake show-biz way! LOL!

  • Bottom Line

by Gooteau on 9/10/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 2 out of 5

If I had read the reviews before I bought my tickets, I would not have done so. This was Steve Martin and Martin Short whom I thought would present their histerical stand up comedy. In stead, I got what you can read from the other reviews. I fell asleep several times during the first part of their preformance. Seriously. Then I was shocked at the number of people that walked out during the second half of the preformance. Perhaps it was more entertaining if you were in the first 20 rows or so on the floor. But if you are looking at the purchase of seat af any significance distance of the stage, you might want to invest your money in some other venue.

  • Definitely worth it!

They are a great team! Watching clips during the show from their acts along the years was very nostalgic. It was a great add to the show. I would go see them again!

A lot of fun & good memories from the past. The duo was very clever & worked well together. My only complaint was that it was no longer than 1 hour 40 minutes, which for a $117 seat was a little brief. I would have felt better had they come back out and done a true 15 minute encore.

  • Entertainment galore

Always wanted to see Steve Martin in person and my wish came true. I was not as familiar with Martin Short but glad I got to see him too...he's very funny and quick witted. Put them together and prepare to laugh. Steve is a very talented Banjo player and another dream came true to hear and see him play. Steve is one of the funniest men on the planet!!! Great entertaining show.

  • Less chat more jokes would have been better

by AlanMatthews on 9/10/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 2 out of 5

These guys are hilarious except they weren't in this case. They had a grand old time and Steve played banjo with his pals and they all reminisced about old times. And there were some jokes but they were tired and old and not funny enough given that 8000 people were primed to laugh.

  • Martin and Short were wonderful!

  • The Martins were Super Funny

by SteveJN on 9/10/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

One of the best concerts ever. Both were very funny. Great clips from their movies and TV shows. Steve's banjo playing was excellent. Definitely an R-rated show with some great adult humor.

  • Steve Martin & Martin Short - once in a lifetime

    by Ron5172 on 9/10/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Hilarious night watching two comedy legends perform with each other on stage. I've been a big Steve Martin fan for a long time and he did not disappoint. He and Martin Short played off each other spectacularly when together and were equally as funny during their stints on stage alone. If I had the opportunity, I'd see this act every week.

  • Amazing show!

  • by namenotchosen on 9/10/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 3 out of 5

First half of the show, with men bantering, was very funny, quick & enjoyable. They are both smart, witty guys. The second half, with Steve on the banjo and Martin in costume was boring. Martin Short brings 'game' to the stage. Steve just brings himself. Yawn. Lots of video playing to take up time. Alarmingly short show.
