Steve Martin & Martin Short on Tour

As two titans of comedy, Steve Martin and Martin Short have conquered film, television, and the stage in the course of their long, dazzling careers. But the live shows that grew out of both their friendship and their undeniable comedic chemistry create something special enough to stand out even among the many achievements of these two show-biz veterans.

In 2015, they worked up a show that combined both of their quirky gifts and started taking it around the country. Even more people got a share of the laughs when one show was filmed for the 2018 Netflix special An Evening You'll Forget for the Rest of Your Life, where Short and Martin joke, jab, and jibe with each other and inject a little music into the mix as well. Martin showed off his Grammy-winning banjo prowess and Short displayed his Tony-winning vocal chops.

Later that year, the pair announced a new tour: Now You See Them, Soon You Won't. It presented an evening of all-new material and reunited them with Steve's Grammy-winning bluegrass compatriots — the Steep Canyon Rangers — for a couple of hot-picking musical moments in the bargain.

Steve Martin & Martin Short Background

Steve Martin debuted his offbeat brand of stand-up comedy in the 1960s, when he first reached a wide audience via the TV shows of the Smothers Brothers and Sonny & Cher. His appearances on Saturday Night Live in the mid '70s helped him become one of the most successful stand-up comedians on the planet. His idiosyncratic, often absurdist style translated to sold-out arena shows and platinum albums.

In short order he became a film star, with movies like The Jerk and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. It was on the 1986 film Three Amigos that he first worked with Martin Short, who had become famous for his outrageous characters and sketch comedy mastery on SCTV and SNL earlier in the '80s.

Short went on to plenty of big films himself, and the two teamed up again in 1991's Father of the Bride as well as its 1995 sequel. Short became a Broadway star in the '90s with shows like The Goodbye Girl and Little Me, and he inhabited the classic character Jiminy Glick in the '00s for his Comedy Central series Primetime Glick. But for all the many accomplishments lining both their legacies, when Martin and Short come together for their live performances, they create an utterly unique comedic force.

  • It was just ok

The show is called a "stupid conversation" and I found it was just that - a conversation, pretty stupid, old jokes, tired schtick etc.... I can count on one hand how many times I laughed (once) or chuckled (maybe 3 times.) The highlight was Steve Martin's band. Expensive tickets for a show that just wasn't worth it.

  • Steve Martin was so so

Martin Short still has it and was 90% of the show. Steve just isn't that funny anymore but is one heck of a banjo player. The show was very short (pun on words) and in the end I would say, not worth the money.

The two of them together were as entertaining as you would expect. It was clear there is a deep friendship. The show allowed them individual entertainment time as well. The time went by too quickly.

  • The two Martins put on an excellent show !!

The show was funny from beginning to end !! An excellent way to spend a Saturday night !!

  • Non stop laughs

by Helpmefindaname on 4/27/15Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

This show did not disappoint. the opening video montage warmed us up by showing clips from some of their classic early work, pieces fans never tire of. The show itself was funny and fun from the very first moment each one appeared. The only awkward moments were when they tried to localize, ie. mentioning our border relationship with Canada, trying to joke about the Governor, and bringing up the national political scene. I guess that audience took politics VERY seriously. Each comedian had some solo time on stage. Martin Short's was hilarious. Steve Martin played excellent banjo with the Steep Canyon Rangers.

  • Good time!

I really enjoyed the show, 2 comedy legends keeping you entertained for the amount of time the contract says.

  • Steve Martin and Martin Short were timeless!

by dawnllev on 4/27/15Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

The comedy of these two is fantastic! They never seem to age, both men had all the energy and spot on wit as they always had. The band is amazing!

  • Excellent, an hour and half of laughs

    by Ed2097 on 4/27/15Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

I would see this again! This brings back the FUN comedy that we grew up with in the 70s and 80s!

  • Dirty & irreverent

by Geofrey on 4/27/15Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 1 out of 5

Very disappointed - a lot of impurity from two old men who used to be talented enough that they didn't need to resort to that. Martin Short's sketch on the Holy Family had us walking out....

  • Great show

I thought the show was going to be more slow paced based on how it started out but wat a surprise. The show just got funnier and funnier! Loved it and I have recommended it to others.

  • Very disappointed

Steve Martin needs to hang it up as far as his comedy is concerned. He seems to have lost his edge and his familiar speaking voice as well. He sounds like an 86 year old man. He is a talented musician and should stick to that. Martin Short stole the show, but since the show was really poor to begin with, he could have done a lot more. Their funniest stuff was the taped old clips shown on the big screens. And now the absolute worst thing....the show was the day after the death of pioneering comic icon Joan Rivers and not one mention of her! What poor manners not to acknowledge that anywhere in the whole show. Shame on them both for that! I should mention that I have been a fan of Steve Martin since his early days before the wild & crazy guy bit, but this is the first time seeing him doing comedy onstage. I wish I hadn't bothered. It will take a lot of effort on my part to enjoy his movies in the future. Damn it, Steve.

  • Not worth it

    by nina224 on 9/15/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 2 out of 5

I absolutely love Steve Martin - but this was disappointing. 1 1/2 hr split between Steve Martin & Martin Short. First, I thought there would be more 'conversation' and jokes between the two of them - there was about 15 minutes of it. Then Martin Short did an over-the-top routine. Then, was Steve Martin who played some of his bluegrass hits (which I love) but I just saw him on his amazing bluegrass tour last year - was expecting a lot more.

  • They still have it!

by haaskeeka on 9/15/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

This was a legendary show! I couldn't stop laughing and besides the amazing chemistry between the two of them I felt like a little girl again getting a chance to get nostalgic with these amazing comedians from my youth. If I get a chance to see them again I definitely will.

  • Two Icons - One Great Show!!

by Anonymous on 9/15/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

Seeing Steve Martin and Martin Short live, in person, was awesome!! Just don't expect to see the characters they played in their movies, and you won't be dissapointed. It was really neat to see them banter, and although the jabs seemed more than real, the show was well written, and seeing them sans screen-written scripts was cool. I laughed - just not as much as I thought I would. PS - SM's Bluegrass band is pretty sweet.

I do not like the debasing nature of their comedy. I do not like when they put down each other. That type of comedy reminds me of childish put downs

  • by Anonymous on 9/12/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

hilarious! all the classics and a little bit of this and that. martin short dances in multiple characters. you have to see to believe what he does!

  • Steve Martin & Martin Short Were Disappointing

by Fritzzz on 9/12/14Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 2 out of 5

With two very funny men, I expected great comedy. Instead we got bluegrass, general conversation and guys trying to "fill time".
