Steve Martin & Martin Short on Tour

As two titans of comedy, Steve Martin and Martin Short have conquered film, television, and the stage in the course of their long, dazzling careers. But the live shows that grew out of both their friendship and their undeniable comedic chemistry create something special enough to stand out even among the many achievements of these two show-biz veterans.

In 2015, they worked up a show that combined both of their quirky gifts and started taking it around the country. Even more people got a share of the laughs when one show was filmed for the 2018 Netflix special An Evening You'll Forget for the Rest of Your Life, where Short and Martin joke, jab, and jibe with each other and inject a little music into the mix as well. Martin showed off his Grammy-winning banjo prowess and Short displayed his Tony-winning vocal chops.

Later that year, the pair announced a new tour: Now You See Them, Soon You Won't. It presented an evening of all-new material and reunited them with Steve's Grammy-winning bluegrass compatriots — the Steep Canyon Rangers — for a couple of hot-picking musical moments in the bargain.

Steve Martin & Martin Short Background

Steve Martin debuted his offbeat brand of stand-up comedy in the 1960s, when he first reached a wide audience via the TV shows of the Smothers Brothers and Sonny & Cher. His appearances on Saturday Night Live in the mid '70s helped him become one of the most successful stand-up comedians on the planet. His idiosyncratic, often absurdist style translated to sold-out arena shows and platinum albums.

In short order he became a film star, with movies like The Jerk and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. It was on the 1986 film Three Amigos that he first worked with Martin Short, who had become famous for his outrageous characters and sketch comedy mastery on SCTV and SNL earlier in the '80s.

Short went on to plenty of big films himself, and the two teamed up again in 1991's Father of the Bride as well as its 1995 sequel. Short became a Broadway star in the '90s with shows like The Goodbye Girl and Little Me, and he inhabited the classic character Jiminy Glick in the '00s for his Comedy Central series Primetime Glick. But for all the many accomplishments lining both their legacies, when Martin and Short come together for their live performances, they create an utterly unique comedic force.

  • Steve Martin/martin short just so-so

by Shortymcshortyton on 4/27/15Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 3 out of 5

Love them both. However Steve martin was a little dry. Martin short was comedic and funny and active. Steve martin, not so much. It was nice to see him play the banjo with his band. But not so nice to watch just his band play while both Martin and Short were off stage. The clips of their years on TV and in Movie went on too long

  • Martin & Martin Werre Fabulous!!!

  • Martin Short was funny...Steve Martin not so much

by LHMI on 4/27/15Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 3 out of 5

They started out as joint effort, talking about each other, their friendship and such. Had 3 guys come up on stage and have fun..really a good laugh. Then Martin did his solo, very funny and entertaining. Steve came out with his banjo band and played music, not much singing, just band playing..BOOORRRINGGGG. No comedy act there. BATHROOM break time! Then they got back together for a few more moments and it was over.

  • Great fun

My face hurt from laughing and smiling as I left the Fox Friday night. The shameless Martin Short was the perfect foil for Steve Martin's slightly more subtle humor. What an entertaining evening, including the great bluegrass music by Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers! Such fun.

  • Martin and Martin

Loved the comment they made we are doing this show because we should have saved our money..... They are funny either separately or together. Can't believe how much energy Martin Short has. While Steve Martin seems more layed back. Enjoyable show and audience seemed to relate to their jokes.

  • Sorry

I have been a fan of both of these guys for many years so I thought I would treat myself to their show. $79. plus fees = $92.00. With $15. for parking, it's an expensive night out. I was sad, disappointed & then disgusted., & then embarrassed for them. The first 20 minutes they were disparaging each others work. Then told stories of their lives, maybe two each. With the scope of their careers these were sadly uninteresting. The four or more F-bombs dropped were also unnecessary. Once Mr. Short dropped the M-F-bomb, I was out of there. Sadly I missed Steve Martins musical talents, but I couldn't take any more.

  • Laughed until I cried!!

    by Jennifer314 on 4/27/15Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

This was so much fun! I haven't laughed this hard in a long time. They had a great rapport and clearly had fun with each other. It was a great night! My only complaint was that it was over too soon. I could have watched them all night! If the show comes to your town, don't miss it!!!

  • Had a great time

by Anonymous on 4/27/15Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

Martin was great but i did feel Steve was not as funny as i thought he'd be he could have never held that show alone but i did really enjoyed his bad.

  • Steve Martin was not great.

by Anonymous on 4/27/15Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

I was really looking forward to seeing Steve Martin but he seemed as though he was sick, or tired, and just not with it. Also, I expected a comedy show, NOT a bluegrass festival. Martin Short however was fantastic! I thought he was funnier than ever before and saved the show. I think both men are talented and were funny together, but I would have liked more comedy and less bluegrass from Steve..

  • Martin & Short were Hilarious!

by Deezsmom on 4/27/15Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

My only complaint was that the show had been a little longer. My husband and I laughed so much our faces were sore. Very entertaining.

  • Hilarious!

Steve Martin and Martin Short are hilarious together. Martin's slap-stick humor is the perfect complement to Steve's dry sense of humor. Steve Martin is a remarkable musician. He and the band were awesome. I laughed so hard my stomach hurt. It was well worth the money. I only wish we could have afforded to sit closer to the stage.

  • Fun evening

by NoVIskier on 4/27/15Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

Video from past shows was fun, but seemed to be filler for lack of new material. Some of the bits, jokes reminded me of Bob Hope in his late years - "long in the tooth." (For those that have never heard this, it's a reference to gum recession, making the teeth look long - a reference to aging). Still there were plenty of good laughs to be had. This might be a remembrance/farewell tour, as both Martins are getting up in years - so worth seeing. I've missed others (eg Victor Borge) and so was glad to see this pair. The bluegrass music was fantastic - wife now wants to make a trip to Telluride or southern bluegrass festival as a result.

Hilarious! They still are great comedians, especially together. Loved the video clips and the band!

  • Martin Short Stole the Show!

    by CPop0515 on 4/27/15Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

I was so excited to see Steve Martin & Martin Short and was hoping it would be as awesome as I had built it up to in my head--let me tell you, I was NOT disappointed in the least. I enjoyed the opening "conversation" between the two, but enjoyed Martin Shorts antics all the more. He is so talented, full of energy and hysterical. I was thrilled also to hear Steve Martin play his banjo and the Steep Canyon Rangers were awesome as well. Just all around great fun!

  • Steve Martin is the best!

    by 1940Hair on 4/27/15Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

Could have done without the naked Martin Short bit. More of Steve Martin and his Steep Canyon Rangers! Enjoyed being at the Fox.

  • Steve Martin and Martin Short Show was GREAT!

by JessiesGems on 4/27/15Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

The show was awesome. These comedians are hilarious. Additionally, Steve Martin is a talented musician and I really enjoyed his banjo playing and blue grass band. Of course, he found a way to make it funny too!

  • Steve Martin and Martin Short

by Mikfoy on 4/27/15Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

Almost everyone thought the show was too short. Would have loved it if Steve Martin would have done dueling banjos.too much film. It's all available on You Tube to watch at home.

  • Two white guys playing the dozens

by catlove on 4/27/15Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

It might not sound like it, but it was pretty funny watching two friends of thirty years ragging on each other. "You're so white it is like working with a ghost:" Steve Martin has developed a certain maturity over the years and sometimes it was like watching a big dog being yapped at by a small dog, but Martin Short who said he was 65 is so limber and spray that it was hard to believe. So when he danced around the stage ala Jerry Lewis, it brought lots of laughs from the audience. Steve Martin's banjo playing was spectacular. This is what brought me to the concert and I wasn't disappointed. The Steep Canyon Rangers have developed more stage presence since the last time I saw them, and their playing if anything is better. The clip from both men's work shown on the big screen was wonderful to see. Yes, it was a great night with two wild and crazy guys.

  • Steve Martin & Martin Short are hilarious

The show was fantastic. We didn't know what to expect but Steve Martin and Martin Short delivered a funny and memorable performance. Steve Martin is funny and can play banjo really well, and Martin Short is energetic and surprising.
