I was thrilled to finalize see Steve Earle live in concert. He did not disappoint. The show featured a nice mix of old and new. One of the best songs came from his album about the mining accident in which he called out the names of all the miners who died and called upon support for the labor unions. He also presented a song in praise of firefighters and mentioned how people shouldn't be living in hazard zones. This casino crowd was fairly intoxicated and enthusiastic, but they all pretty much fell silent when he passionately expressed liberal views. I wondered if these people were somehow unaware of Earles progressive politics. I loved the show and hopefully can see him perform again someday.
This was a hard rocking and rowdy night out in one of my favorite venues. Earle and the Dukes played for about two hours. They covered material from the start of his career to the present and included excellent cover versions of tunes by other artists (3 from Jerry Jeff and one apiece from the dead and the Band). Both the artist and the venue are highly recommended.
To be clear, Steve Earle was my favorite performer, i bought his first twelve albums/discs. Then he stopped rocking, and started singing about his feelings and playing other people's music. I haven't bought a record of his in 10 years. I went last night to see him in a small venue, hoping to have my affection re-kindled. The band was good, he was OK, but his massive ego dictated the show. He knew what the crowd wanted to hear, and he refused to play it.
I drove up to Seattle from Portland because I couldn’t make the show here. I’m an old Steve Earle fan but have recently learned about the Mastersons and by extension, The Whitmore Sisters. I’ve become mesmerized by the Transient Lullaby and Ghost Stories albums so it was a great thrill to see guitar slinger/writer/producer Chris Masterson accompanying the sisters to open the show. Even without the support of a full band, their songs came vividly to life. They are remarkable artists, demonstrating a wide stylistic range and creativity in their songwriting, not to mention their “blood harmonies”. That is for real! The high point for me was their rendition of “Superficial World Of Love”, which the sisters co-wrote. Bonnie sang her heart out and although they joked about the drama afterward, there is no way on god’s green earth you can write a song like that without having had your heart broken to smithereens. I love these gals. Steve Earle and the Dukes took it from there knocking out classics like “I Ain’t Never Satisfied”, “Guitar Town”, “Galway Girl” and “Dixieland”, then launching into new material like their inspired tribute to Jerry Jeff Walker, “Gyspy Song Man”. The band was constantly switching out instruments to best capture the feel they wanted for each song; they morphed from folk to outlaw to celtic to blues to down and dirty rock n’ roll without so much as a hiccup. I got a huge kick out of their choice of covers, notably “Mr. Bo Jangles”, “Casey Jones” and The Band’s “Rag Mama Rag”. The Dukes are a crack band of veteran players backing up a guy who had the entire audience hanging on his every word. So damn glad I caught the show.
Loved seeing Steve Earle and enjoyed the gal on the violin!! The Neptune was great, you could sit up above or stand down below and get up close.
Excellent concert. Non-stop gorgeous music from a brilliant musician, songwriter and an amazing human being
I really enjoyed seeing Steve Earle and the Dukes. They are a wonderful band. It was great!
I've seen this group three times, and unfortunately this was the worst I've seen. The mixing was too loud and the accoustics of the venue were not up to the task. Will I go see Steve Earle and the Dukes again, probably because hope springs eternal.
Awesome show, reasonably priced tickets, great performance!
Awesome performance of both old and new material by Steve Earle. Fans definitely got their moneys worth with this performance!! Great opening performance by The Whitmore Sisters.
The only thing that was disappointing was that especially in the beginning the music drowned out the vocal. It got some better as the concert went on. I would go again sometime. And hope they had the right sound mix.
Steve Earle and the Dukes rocked it on Friday. The Whitmore sisters were a great opener too. We had the best time and loved every minute.
First time ever at the Hoyt Sherman and it was very beautiful venue , didn’t care for the bigger blonde whittmore sister the redhead was very talented and we really enjoyed Steve Earle
My friend gave us her tickets because she couldn’t go, we don’t usually get to sit in the front row!! It was a great show!!
It was a great concert, Steve and the entire band gave us an excellent show. The only negative I can give about the Birchmere is the seating process, it seems to be more complicated than it needs to be and having to wait in line twice shouldn't be necessary.
Great show. Well done. I was not familiar with a lot of his songs, but loved it. Great entertainers
Steve Earle opened the show with several tunes from his new Jerry Jeff Walker tribute album including Mr. Bo Jangles. The band, the Dukes which included the Mastersons, was tight and nothing short of outstanding. What a talented bunch of musicians! The show progressed quickly including Steve's past hits Galway Girl, Guitar Town, Goodbye and of course, the iconic Copperhead Road. Lots of ticket holders up dancing and enjoying the upbeat show. Ended with an encore and 2 more tunes. No merch and no meet and greet but that's just a sign of the times which will hopefully change as time goes by. Can't wait for a return visit.
I've been a Steve Earle fan forever. Can't get enough. He and his band were awesome. His tribute to Jerry Jeff Walker was admirable. Will be there next time he comes back. Steve just keeps on getting better and better.
Between the lousy sound system (nobody could hear the words to the songs) and inserting his political views it was a long night.
