Stephen Stills was amazing! He's so talented and passionate about the music. Great to see him live and to hear all the infamous songs. Loved it.

Stephen was at his best last night

by Anonymous on 3/21/10Grove of Anaheim - Anaheim

The first set was acoustic and excellent. The second set was all electric and Stephen can still pick it. However the guitar was so loud it seemed distorted and overwhelmed the vocals as well as the band. Overall I would do it again just for the first set.

He still has IT at 60+ years of age. Guitar chops still sound, and although the voice weakened a bit at the end, was still very good. His band (Joe Vitale, etc.) never missed a beat. I look forward to seeing him again the next time he comes our way.

    Stills has still got it

by ImpressedFan on 3/21/10Grove of Anaheim - Anaheim

I read a few reviews that were negative prior to going to the show. Wow, I have never been more surprised in my life. He was awesome. And it wasn't just my wife and I that thought so. He pretty much received a standing ovation after every song. I had heard his voice was gone ... well ... he got it back because he sure sounded like quality Stephen Stills to me. He was also having a good time with the crowd and you could tell he knew he was on his game. He is also one of the best guitar players I have seen live. Would go see him again without any question.

    Stephen Stills still has it!

by norwaysue on 3/21/10Grove of Anaheim - Anaheim

We saw Stephen Stills play last night at the Grove in Anaheim California and he still has it! Of course, most of the fans were 50 and 60 but there were also some 2nd and 3rd generation music lovers there, too. Stephen is a National Treasure and has been loved, appreciated and enjoyed by us for decades and we enjoyed his varied repetoir of accoustic guitar solos and electric guitar accompanied by some of his long standing muscian friends, including Joe Vitale on the drums. I purchased Joe's book, Backstage Pass, last fall when I saw Crosby, Stills, and Nash at the Greek Theatre and I have been enjoying it ever since. The book has lots of pictures and fun, positive stories of his experiences recording and touring with CSN, Stephen Stills, Joe Walsh, etc., etc. for the past 40 years. You go, Joebaub! These fellows were fabulous musicians back in the 60s and 70s and are wonderful, seasoned musicians in 2010. You all still have it! Thank you for sharing your gifts with us lo these many years! Time does fly when you are having fun and Stephen's music has been a large part of the SoundTrack of our lives!

    Stephen Still endures

by Gidu1 on 3/21/10Grove of Anaheim - Anaheim

This concert was very pleasantly surprising. I read the OC Register review, if you can call it that, and almost didn't attend. Stills vocals, while they cracked from time to time were strong and his dynamics were outstanding. The guitar work was awesome and some of those old protest songs still hold up. As Stills noted, we haven't learned a thing. I enjoyed every minute from the first note to the last. I have followed his career and consider myself a fan, and only wished he would have done more. I liked the idea that he paid tribute to other writers and simply said, this is another song that I like written by.... and then played it. I cannot thing of a better tribute to a peer than for a two time Rock n Roll Hall of Famer to sing your song.

    Stills was incredible

by RFSLegal on 3/19/10The Music Box at the Fonda - Hollywood

With an acoustic guitar that at times sounded like a band, and with a drummer, bass player, and organist that at times sounded like an orchestra; Stephen Stills gave a concert last night that was unforgettable. We were on Hollywood Boulevard, not far from Sunset Boulevard where Stills and Young and the others hooked up to form Buffalo Springfield, not far from the Whiskey where BS was the house band for a time in the 60's, not far from where Pandora's Box was closed in November of 1966 and Stills, seeing police overacting to people who were protesting the closure, composed his landmark song, "For What It's Worth." So though Stills is an international composer and performer, it felt like a homecoming. Stills started out acoustically and everyone in the crowd felt like we had been invited in to a friend's living room to have a glass of Jack Daniels, reminisce, and enjoy Stills play some of his great music. His version of Tree Top Flyer was joyful and his songs were full of drama, love, war, politics. He told wonderful stories, including the time Neil Young decided to push a car over a hill... Then the band came out and rocked. In particular, Stills' version of Rock n Roll Woman showed that as much as anyone, he can play electric guitar and rock a house whether it is an area or a smaller venue. He played several songs in his encore, ending with Love the One Your With. It was great hit after great hit, played with feeling and joy. His singing was real, and enjoyable, not perfect, not polished through computers in a studio. And you could see him warm up, it was like watching a great ballplayer take some practice swings, and then hit baseballs over the fence, one great smash after the other. His songs were celebrations not just of the times we all had as we listened to them, but also celebrations of a great composer and musician. Much of the crowd gave him standing ovations after songs, sometimes in the middle of songs after certain verses or guitar solos. And the venue was o.k. too, there were chairs, the sound was good (wished we could have heard some of the harmonies from the other musicians better) , but great music played by a great musician. I'd go again. And I can't help but observe that it was ironic that Judy Collins was playing a few miles up the 101 last night...

Stephen was absolutely fabulous. He did the first 45 minutes solo. I can go on and on about the amazing sound of the combination of his unique voice and the Martin D45 acustic guitar that he's been playing for 40 years, but let's just say that is was more than a concert...it was a Stephen Stills performance.

    so so

by lucky90 on 3/11/10michigan theater - ann arbor

Stills can still rock out on guitar, his voice however is shot. He was painful to listen to acompanied by only acoustic guitar, once the band came on to back him up it either muffled his poor pitch or he slightly improved, hard to say.

    Worse concert ever.

by Icedoc on 3/11/10Michigan Theater - Ann Arbor

Let me start by saying that I am (or was) a huge Steven Stills fan since the late 1960's. I have seen him twice before this concert. One, in a huge outdoor venture after CSN split up(1973) and a second time with Crosby, Nash and Young in a 20,000+ sold-out sports arena. Enjoyed each of first two immensely! After the first song sung at the Ann Arbor, March 6 concert, I looked at my wife and said.. "uh-oh" ! We listened to about 5 more tunes, (two of which were another artists songs that I never heard), looked at each other and walked out . Of the countless rock concerts I have been to dating back to 1968, I HAVE NEVER WALKED OUT OF A CONCERT. Even the artist himself was self-effacing. He appeared drunk (or high), not all that unusual, but he kept trying to hit high notes on the register and it actually hurt to listen to him. We are very dissapointed and angry that an artist would come into town and try to push such an outrageous performance on his dedicated fans. It has changed the way I will view all aging rock artists in the future, forever.

    Stills still has it !

by GAS1 on 3/7/10Michigan Theater - Ann Arbor

Stephen Stills showed he can still captivate the audience with his guitar , his quirky wit, and his "haunting" voice. It was a walk down memory lane for me, and I wasn't dissapointed. His first set was with his acoustic, and the second set went electric...and really showed he still enjoys rocking....wheather it be his Buffalo Springfield material ..the CSNY gems...or his personal material. His lyrics were always masterful pieces of his soul, but they live on in his enthusiasm for his material, and art. Bravo to Stills and I went away totally pleased and singing some of his tunes in my head the rest of the night.

Stephen Stills not a fine wine

by Dave670 on 3/7/10Michigan Theater - Ann Arbor

Stephen Stills was not at his best on Saturday night in Ann Arbor for a guy pushing 65 I suppose there are concessions but it wasn't his voice that was the issue his guitar playing was sub par and his bass player moved in very disturbing ways. His last two songs were his best Woodstock and his encore for what it's worth but they're not worth the price of admission.

No one got up except for the obligatory encore

by myfaveat18 on 3/7/10Michigan Theater - Ann Arbor

The good points- --small venue --a chance to see an icon --friendly banter with the crowd, though not easily understood --good songs (but not well done) --good riffs but not sufficient to get the crowd into it. Few cheers or dancing The bad- --Stills' voice is shot--not good for the acoustic set to start --Seating is bad if you get a big guy in front of you--had to crane my neck into my neighbor's seat --could not get the crowd going. I could not wait to stand up or even move in my seat but it was not to be Stills said he hurt his finger--maybe that had something to do with it

Stephen Stills reaching forward and back

by MrSoul on 3/7/10Michigan Theater - Ann Arbor

Great venue. Incredible guitar work with excellent drums, bass and keyboards. Vocals were a stretch but he acknowledged his limitations and that made it just fine. Covered some other classics that he handled very nicely.
