  • Sweet Voice Gone Sour

by JDDJD on 11/1/11Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 2 out of 5

Stephen Stills is a rock legend. Who amongst we baby boomers didn't enjoy his music and talents during our formative years? What a talent! But, with great disappointment, he can no longer sing. Those sweet melodic sounds of Stills' voice in so many rock standards can no longer come from him at this stage of his long career. People come to hear the legend. They see the legend but like many of his peers, he sounds nothing like we remember. And as for the show, if one wishes to attend desiring mostly to hear old favorites, this is not the show for you as this part of the show was limited to about six pieces. If, however, one wishes to hear this legendary artist's blues selections in an often subdued environment as part of the "art of music," then this was a more enjoyable show for you. The lesson to be learned when considering attending a show from a rock legend is, do not expect to hear what you heard 30-40 years ago, understand that the legend is the same name, but not the same performer, and you won't be disappointed like me.

Really great show. Wouldn't have changed anything other than making it about an hour longer. ;-)

  • Stephen Stills - one of the best

by Pickindoug on 11/1/11Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

I saw Stills with CSNY and the Stills/Young tours of the 70s. All of us lose a few notes on the high end along the way, but he still hit the important ones. Guitar picking was great, hasn't lost any of his chops. Guitar tones from the strat, penguin, and martins all sounded perfect. With Vitale and Passarelli, a perfect combo to rock the night. Great crowd rapport and stage presence. He was clearly having as much fun as the audience. Hope to see him again.

I thought the Variety might be General Admission (which it said on the ticket) -- but noticed on our way down that our seats had Seat #s on them (although it did also say "General Admission"). In any case, since I thought we had seats, we showed up five minutes before the show; the only seats were standing on the floor near the stage. On the one hand -- great view. On the other hand, at 54 years old with others in that age range, it was tiresome, hot and not comfortable. If I had been seated, the 10-15 rows deep of people standing would have blocked my view. So unless I can show up very early next time and I have some idea of whether people will be standing (like they were not 6 years ago when I saw Randy Newman) -- I won't go to the Variety anymore.

  • Thanks Stephen

Stephen, thanks for being the entertainer you are! You are indeed one of the top guitarists in the world.

Even at his age he still has it! Wasn't sure what I was going to hear but he was fabulous...enjoyed every second of it.

  • Stills at the State Theater

by bucksport on 10/28/11State Theatre - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Stephen Stills has long been a favorite of mine. He was the main force behind the playing on the first CSN album and I could hear that hear. His sets were filled with great songs and a couple of well-chosen covers. He had a great attitude about himself and his place. His humor was a little "barbed" but funny... Nice versions of Helplessly Hoping, Suite:Judy Blue Eyes, and Southern Cross (my wife's favorite). Not a big fan of his distorted Strat tones but a huge fan of his Gretsch White Falcon and Martin sounds... Like hearing an old friend play some great tunes...

An wonderful show, he is still the entertainer we all have come to know and appreciate. I feel bad for those that didn't see the show.

  • Stills in Maine

by loafa on 10/27/11State Theatre - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

It is nice to see an artist that is still - no pun intended - evolving. His voice is not as smooth, but the guitar playing is top notch. Great band, great music and stuff people had not heard before. This is not CSN or CSNY, its Stills accept that and enjoy great music. Recommended.

  • Great Show!

    by Bondo1951 on 10/27/11Wilbur Theatre - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Stills showcased his excellent guitar work on both acoustic & electric sets. His backup band was tight as they weaved their way through his catalog of songs from solo hits to CSNY numbers. I've been a Stephen Stills fan for decades & he did not disappoint.

Terrific show; great venue! The music got better and better right up to the last note!

  • Great Show from Stephen Stills & Band

    by Yoda74 on 10/26/11Wilbur Theatre - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

I thoroughly enjoyed Stephen Stills' show here in Boston at the Wilbur Theater. Vacationing here, I've never been to this venue, and the converted interior had good acoustics and sound, but uncomfortable seating (bar stools w/ backs) and not great sight lines. The songs were great, as was his band. He ripped through many CSN classics, as well as Buffalo Springfield and solo material. Bluebird opened the show and it was apparent early that his guitar skills are still considerable. He closed the first set with Suite Judy Blue Eyes, and had lively banter between songs with the audience. Really enjoyed this show. Joe Vitale was great on drums.

  • Stephen was great

by ChicagoFanFromNatick on 10/25/11Wilbur Theatre - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

Suite Judy Blue Eyes was so great you could hear him auditioning the song to Graham and David and those guys saying, yeah, he's in the band. Great performance by Stephen, the band was sloppy. He did not do Treetop Flyer or Black Queen, which would have been cool. Lots of missed cues throughout, very loose. Worth it to see Stephen play those licks in those tunings. Lost 40 pounds and is getting back to the guy he was. LOVED IT.

  • Josh Hisle/Stephen Stills - AWESOME

    by dlb01821 on 10/25/11Wilbur Theatre - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

The show was spectacular! Josh Hisle is a great musician and Stephen picked the right one to tour with him. His guitar picking is phenomenal, lyrics touching and his voice is smooth! Stills looks great, he lost a bit of weight ,was funny and his playing was right on ..for those who missed it, you missed a great show and do not forget to look up Josh Hisle, because I think that he will be around for a long time!,

  • Legend still has his skills

by LouLouL on 10/25/11Wilbur Theatre - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

Being a long time fan, growing up along with CSN, Stills has always been my favorite of the three. He proved it to me again at the Wilbur. His many years on stage showed as he displayed a very comfortable self assurance working with his audience. Vocally, he started out a little rough but steadily got better. His ability to change his classics "just a little": made them fresh to us, and I'm sure made it more enjoyable for himself. His guitar playing is always great, but I have heard him crisper. His band was terrific, and they were having as much fun as we all were. I think everyone left satisified and had heard the best of his 40 years of music
