Oh, dear--what happened?
by grannylou on 12/5/16Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 1 out of 5We remember the Steep Canyon Rangers when we first saw them at Merlefest, perhaps it was 2005--an exciting young bluegrass group with energy and lots of good songs. Steve Martin found them and they had a exciting tour (which we saw) and a great CD came out of that. Now it's all different. It's mostly instrumental, of some Americana-type non-melodic, who knows what--lots of flashing lights, with Graham Sharp (banjo) and Mike Guggino (mandolin) prancing around the stage. Woody Platt, their erstwhile lead singer, is barely allowed to sing anything solo. Nicky Sanders is still doing his thing. But, kiss of death, they have added a drummer. So go see them is that is your cup of tea. Bluegrass it ain't.
