  • Oh, dear--what happened?

by grannylou on 12/5/16Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 1 out of 5

We remember the Steep Canyon Rangers when we first saw them at Merlefest, perhaps it was 2005--an exciting young bluegrass group with energy and lots of good songs. Steve Martin found them and they had a exciting tour (which we saw) and a great CD came out of that. Now it's all different. It's mostly instrumental, of some Americana-type non-melodic, who knows what--lots of flashing lights, with Graham Sharp (banjo) and Mike Guggino (mandolin) prancing around the stage. Woody Platt, their erstwhile lead singer, is barely allowed to sing anything solo. Nicky Sanders is still doing his thing. But, kiss of death, they have added a drummer. So go see them is that is your cup of tea. Bluegrass it ain't.

  • The Steep Canyon Rangers Are Simply The Best!

by randyCathy on 12/4/16Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

The Steep Canyon Rangers are simply the best there is in bluegrass music. These two time Grammy Award winning artists put on a great show lasting close to two hours, including TWO encore number. Almost all of their songs have been written by members of the group, Each member in addition to vocals, is outstanding on their individiual instruments. Nicky Sanders on fiddle is as good as it gets and he always puts on a very energetic and entertaining performance. Each and ever performance of this group is always very entertaining! A very professional group who have been together longer than almost any group in bluegrass and it shows. A not to be missed show whenever they are avilble near you!

I am one of those fickle music listeners that listens to genres according to my mood. The opening group, Pack away handle was rowdy and got you moving. The Steep Canyon Rangers surpassed my expectations of the show. They each handled their instrument as if it was an extension of themselves. When you hear them all together, it is amazing. The music flowed as a smooth sound that you wish will never stop. Thank you, Steep Canyon Rangers!

  • Fun and energetic show

by PCovin on 5/10/16Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

What sets the Steep Canyon Rangers aside from other bluegrass acts is that the energy level never wanes during their shows. The songs may slow down, but even then, they are infused with moments of excitement and unexpected twists and turns. This group is talented. Go see their show. Period.

by joegoseeyonder on 1/18/16U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 3 out of 5

how else can i put it? the crowd is a bunch of aging zombies that barely clap. no dancing no cheering and no excitement. I have never experienced such a dead boring just sit there and listen kinda show. you want to see something fun go see yonder. last time i will pay to see rangers...besides they usually play for free in sevierville in the spring. Also i swear the TM site and my email reminder said "Doors 8PM" so like most shows i see there i head in about 8:45 and they were already done with the first set...lame... seems about 9:15 after their return and a couple of songs i head to the bar for my first beer and they were closing. citing that the schedule indicated that steep canyon bordom would be done by 9:45??? WOW

These guys are all so talented on their instruments and keep your feet tapping the whole time. The fiddle player is so lively and never stops moving. They are all so friendly and it obvious they all get along well. This is my second show so far. I took a friend and she loved them also.

SCR is not your traditional bluegrass band. They have the classic harmony and play the traditional instruments but that's where it ends. Their harmony is terrific. They are first class musicians and performers. The music they have written is unique and displays their musical talent. It was a great concert, we could listen to that fiddle all night

  • Great show - come back soon!

    by si101503 on 10/15/15Bowery Ballroom - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Almost two hours of non-stop music. Many titles from their outstanding new album "Radio," but some oldies, but goodies also. A good vibe. Lots of virtuoso playing, especially on the fiddle. Steve Martin adds a different dimension, but the Steeps musicianship more than compensates for it.

  • Good Show

The Steep Canyon Rangers exceeded my expectations.

  • Steep Canyon Rangers at Penns Peak - 24-July

by PAblueGrassLover on 7/27/15Penn's Peak - Jim ThorpeRating: 3 out of 5

Great performance, as usual, by SCR. The venue, however, is horrible. Sound system was bad (not too loud, just very poorly mixed). Loads of people (half of the concert attendees?) clogged the 25 or 30 feet between the seats and the stage, bobbing heads, a few were dancing, but many were talking loudly and paying no attention to the performance. On softer passages of the music, the loud talking made it impossible to hear the instruments and singing. BOTTOM LINE: I highly recommend the band, but hate this venue. I will never come to another show at this location

  • Bluegrass at its best

by EasternGate on 4/21/15American Theatre - HamptonRating: 5 out of 5

Steep Canyon Rangers are master musicians who delight and inspire with the energy of their showmanship and songs.

  • Even Better Than Their Albums

    by Ivan44 on 4/21/15American Theatre - HamptonRating: 5 out of 5

We are Steep Canyon Rangers fans, so we listen to their albums often. We love their albums' cuts, know the order of the songs in each album, etc. However, their concerts are always even more exciting because they extend those songs with their outstanding instrumentality: It is inspiring to see them receive their loudest and longest ovations because of their expertise on the mandolin, banjo, and of course Nickie on the fiddle. They also have begun debuting their new songs (to come out on a new album in August), and we enjoyed every new creation: They are complete bluegrass artists, as singers, performers, and songwriters.

what talented musicians. Outstanding performance on the fiddle, mandolin, banjo, bass, guitar and percussion. There is a blend of old and new bluegrass. A lot of stage interaction. I first saw this group at a bluegrass festival at Manteo NC fall of 2014 and knew that I would be following their music.
