About

Spring Awakening is a deaf accessible show that is signed in ASL simultaneously with speech. Deaf patrons seeking to understand through sign would best be served by a seat with a center view of the stage rather than a seat with close proximity to the stage.

Spring Awakening is the story of two star-crossed lovers: the brave and brilliant Melchior and a beautiful, young, deaf girl named Wendla. The musical follows this turn of the century Romeo and Juliet as they learn how to communicate, and how to love, in a world that’s trying to keep them apart.
EXTREMELY LIMITED ENGAGEMENT - NOW THROUGH JANUARY 24 ONLY!

"ONE OF THE GREAT MUSICALS OF THE LAST DECADE IS BORN ANEW."
–The New York Times

"A FIRST RATE PRODUCTION OF A TRANSPORTING MUSICAL."
–The New York Times

“BRILLIANT and BEAUTIFUL.”
–New York Magazine

"REVELATORY & MOVING. An original all its own"
–Newsday

“ELECTRIFYING & EXHILARATING. A Sheer Triumph!”

Deaf West’s production of SPRING AWAKENING floored the critics when it premiered in California, prompting the Los Angeles Times to write, “It's hard to enumerate all the ways in which Deaf West's SPRING AWAKENING is so very, very good.” Now this unapologetically brilliant new production is coming to New York. When it debuted on Broadway, SPRING AWAKENING’s raw and honest portrayal of youth in revolt shattered expectations of what a musical could do, earning it 8 Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, Best Book (for writer, Steven Sater) and Best Score (for composer, Duncan Sheik). Deaf West’s innovative new production takes this already revolutionary musical to electrifying new heights by choreographing sign language into the production, intensifying the rift between the lost and longing teenagers and the adults who refuse to hear them. Directed by Michael Arden and starring Golden Globe and Academy Award® winner Marlee Matlin (Children of a Lesser God), Deaf West’s SPRING AWAKENING is full of knockout performances, explosive music and soul-stirring emotion, but it’s only on Broadway through January 24th.

SPRING AWAKENING IS OUT OF THIS WORLD! - AMAZING

by Rommy23 on 8/18/15Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New YorK City

The songs, the performances, the incredibly poignant dialogue all combined to make this a truly wonderful and bar none experience! I highly recommend that anyone no matter what age or interest in theatre go see it.

    Better than the original!

by DanceTenLooksThree on 8/18/15Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts - Los Angeles

Saw this in LA before it moved to Broadway. I loved the original, but this improved on it in so many ways: choreography was amazing, having some of the characters deaf and using ASL really illustrated the communication problems between the kids and adults, and havis play the instruments was brilliant. Best show I've seen in years.
