About

Spring Awakening is a deaf accessible show that is signed in ASL simultaneously with speech. Deaf patrons seeking to understand through sign would best be served by a seat with a center view of the stage rather than a seat with close proximity to the stage.

Spring Awakening is the story of two star-crossed lovers: the brave and brilliant Melchior and a beautiful, young, deaf girl named Wendla. The musical follows this turn of the century Romeo and Juliet as they learn how to communicate, and how to love, in a world that’s trying to keep them apart.
EXTREMELY LIMITED ENGAGEMENT - NOW THROUGH JANUARY 24 ONLY!

"ONE OF THE GREAT MUSICALS OF THE LAST DECADE IS BORN ANEW."
–The New York Times

"A FIRST RATE PRODUCTION OF A TRANSPORTING MUSICAL."
–The New York Times

“BRILLIANT and BEAUTIFUL.”
–New York Magazine

"REVELATORY & MOVING. An original all its own"
–Newsday

“ELECTRIFYING & EXHILARATING. A Sheer Triumph!”
–AP

Deaf West’s production of SPRING AWAKENING floored the critics when it premiered in California, prompting the Los Angeles Times to write, “It's hard to enumerate all the ways in which Deaf West's SPRING AWAKENING is so very, very good.” Now this unapologetically brilliant new production is coming to New York. When it debuted on Broadway, SPRING AWAKENING’s raw and honest portrayal of youth in revolt shattered expectations of what a musical could do, earning it 8 Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, Best Book (for writer, Steven Sater) and Best Score (for composer, Duncan Sheik). Deaf West’s innovative new production takes this already revolutionary musical to electrifying new heights by choreographing sign language into the production, intensifying the rift between the lost and longing teenagers and the adults who refuse to hear them. Directed by Michael Arden and starring Golden Globe and Academy Award® winner Marlee Matlin (Children of a Lesser God), Deaf West’s SPRING AWAKENING is full of knockout performances, explosive music and soul-stirring emotion, but it’s only on Broadway through January 24th.

    Left at intermission

by 1193 on 9/15/15Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

I was so happy to find cheap tickets to a show I had fallen in love with several years ago. A friend of mine was visiting from out of town, and I was eager to experience the show for my second time, her first. Nowhere on any summary, disclaimer, or confirmation before purchase browser did it say "in sign language." Had I known, I would have absolutely chosen a different show for my friend's visit to the city. Imagine watching a sex scene while there is a shadow actor in the corner speaking for the characters. Never in my life have I left a show at intermission, but unfortunately this show required it. Truly disappointed.

    Spring Awakening was magnificent

by Demselle on 9/15/15Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

I loved the depth and beauty of Spring Awakening. I loved the way ASL was the basis of the choreography; the music was beautiful. The story was serious ;it flowed well. Cast was wonderful. I was in rear mezzanine and, as someone said, there were no bad seats ;the staging was high.

    Spring Awakening

by Pacor on 9/15/15Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

An amazing production that should not be missed. Thought the first production of the Broadway play was powerful. This production exceeds all expectations. Must be seen by anyone who has an appreciation for the theater. All parents should see it. The production will make anyone with a child consider the messages that we give our children and the high cost of unfair expectations and not letting an adolescent live and enjoy his and her life. Masterful production from beginning to end.

Spring Awakening is the best show I've seen. The ASL and voicing were on point. The musical aspect was perfect; the ASL added so much to the show. I enjoyed it, and I recommend all going to see it - whether you know ASL or not. It's beautiful!

by manhattangrandma on 9/13/15Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

The use of the American Deaf Theater and the total fluidity of their acting/emotion with the fabulously talented ensemble make this an experience to remember. One of my top ten - of over 50 years of Broadway theater-going. We'll definitely go again.

One of the coolest productions I've ever seen

by phlemma on 9/11/15Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

The choreography, staging, direction, acting, singing, signing, EVERYTHING was just incredible. A great deal of thought and planning went into this production, as there were so many things to coordinate and perform just right, and they 100% pulled it off. I've truly never seen anything like it; this was a fantastic production. I can't get over the level of talent and precision involved. It was breathtaking.

    "Spring Awakening" was awesome!!!!

by Eastpole on 9/11/15Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

The play was wonderful. The lights, the screnery the props, the music, the dance, the background, the stairs, the deaf and hearing actors, the signing, the singing and most of all the unity of the whole play were simply great! 5 stars! Best view for the Deaf is to sit in the middle orchestra a few rows up.

    Spring Awakening is Broadway Gold

by Billfrank on 9/11/15Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

We were able to see Spring Awakenings first 3 previews and came away wishing we could see every show of the run. Each night saw multiple well deserved standing ovations, lump in the throat moments and goosebumps of excitement. I can not say enough about this dynamic groups performance except that you must see it and not just once. Bravo and encores to all that are honored enough to be members of this production.

    Most Breathtaking Production Ever

by ReeneeG on 9/11/15Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

I went into Spring Awakening expecting a great show, but in reality it was the best production I have ever seen. The directors, designers, and actors all made choices that brought new depth to the story. The addition of sign language created such a strong emotional force to the piece that had me in tears at some points. It's been a couple days and I am still analyzing everything from the show because everything that went on that stage was there for a purpose that varied from social commentary to basic human emotions and more complex themes like how adults do more harm than good by trying to keep their children innocent.

    Amazing!

by TKirk727 on 9/11/15Brooks Atkinson Theatre - New York

This show was fantastic. Better than the original (and I saw the original twice). The chemistry and trust on stage between deaf and non-deaf actors was unlike anything else. Highly recommend to anyone who loves theatre.

Deaf West Spring Awakening NOT TO BE MISSED!

by StageTwo on 8/19/15Brooks Atkinson - NYC

I saw this production last year at a small theatre in Downtown LA and I will move mountains to get to New York to see it on Broadway! Honestly, the stunning performances of the deaf and hearing actors & musicians and the creative staging and direction, truly elevate this musical to a whole new level. So powerful and moving. I had never seen a Deaf West production and was blown away. Have to get to NYC before it leaves, and will look forward to following this dynamic company in the future. Telling all my friends in NYC and beyond: this SPRING AWAKENING is not to be missed!
