South Florida Bulls Men’s Basketball History

The South Florida Bulls men's basketball team first took the court in 1971 as the Golden Brahmans in what is now NCAA Division II, but quickly made the jump to Division I in 1973. The Bulls joined the Sun Belt Conference in 1976 and made further moves to the Metro Conference in 1991, Conference USA in 1995, the Big East in 2005 and The American in 2013.

The Bulls, who adopted their current mascot in 1980, have made three appearances in the NCAA Tournament, in 1990, 1992 and 2012, and advanced the furthest to the Round of 32 in their most recent outing. In 1990, the team won the conference tournament championship as members of the Sun Belt Conference. USF has also competed in the National Invitation Tournament nine times, as well as the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) once, where the Bulls claimed the tournament championship in 2019.

For the 2023-24 season, late head coach Amir Abdur-Rahim led the Bulls to a program-best 25-8 overall record and a 16-2 conference record to claim their first regular season conference championship. The Bulls also achieved their first national ranking on the AP Top 25 College Basketball Poll, while Abdur-Rahim was named the American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Following Abdur-Rahim’s passing in October 2024, USF announced their hiring of Arkansas State head coach Bryan Hodgson.

South Florida Bulls Men’s Basketball at Yuengling Center

USF men’s basketball plays at Yuengling Center on the University of South Florida campus in Tampa, Florida. Opened in 1980, the 10,500-seat venue was originally named the USF Sun Dome until 2018, but it has also earned the nickname the “Rose Garden” after the exceptional Bulls gameplay under head coach Lee Rose between 1980 and 1986. Following the unexpected death of first-year coach Amir Abdur-Rahim in 2024, the arena’s spirited So Flo Rodeo student section was officially dedicated in his honor. A $35.6 million renovation was completed in 2012.

  • Game Great; SunDome Not So Much

by InspectorT on 2/21/11USF Sun Dome - TampaRating: 4 out of 5

The Hoya-Bulls game was exciting, with the Bulls hanging in there against a much more talented team. The SunDome, however, is a slum. I hadn't been in the Dome for 8 years or so. It wasn't great then, and has gone significantly down hill. And the concession stands have St. Pete-Times Forum prices, but without the quality.

Great Seats . Price of tickets was fantastic. Great view of court

  • Go Irish!

    by sjm4 on 2/15/11USF Sun Dome - TampaRating: 5 out of 5

We had a great time at the USF Sundome. Everyone there was very helpful and friendly. We were excited to see the Irish play in Florida!

We had a great time. We are ND fans and do not have many chances to see ND play. It was a wonderful experience. Our seats were the best.

  • Irish Humble FSU

by mountaneerman on 2/14/11USF Sun Dome - TampaRating: 4 out of 5

Good Game for the Irish A very cold shooting day for the FSU Bulls But they never gave up and the Kid from North Port Fl # 22 is going to be a great player for the Bulls The Irish just had too much good defense and and a Great Team effort even thier Center Cooley who is a Sub off the brench scored 18 points in about 10 mins of playing time The Irish could be a Final Four team in the NCAA in March They are real Good

  • USF Sun Dome

    by JoeyD15 on 2/14/11USF Sun Dome - TampaRating: 2 out of 5

Went to watch the Fighting Irish play the Bulls on Saturday, February 12th. The Sun Dome is by far the worse Division I arena that I have been at to watch a college basketball game. The sound system was horrible. Construction occupied numerous parking spaces. Had to pay $10.00 to park. Concessions were that off a high school game. For a public university that has over 40,000 students enrolled, they are running a division III outfit.

  • GO ORANGE!!!

by SUgirl on 2/9/11St Pete Times Forum - TampaRating: 5 out of 5

So amazing paid only $30.00 including taxes and fees and got floor seats 2 row from the basket! Could hear the players and watch the Orangemen crash them baskets up close and personal! All i can say is buy early it pays off!

  • Goooo Orange

by FanOfTheCuse on 2/8/11St Pete Times Forum - TampaRating: 5 out of 5

Couldn't have been better, because Syracuse stomped 'em. We had great seats too.

  • SU Basketball

by Pfloyd33 on 2/8/11St Pete Times Forum - TampaRating: 1 out of 5

I follow SU Basketball, but "C'mon Man", $9.00 for a beer outside at St. Pete Forum and $11.00 for a beer inside, that is insane. I paid $4.50 for a coffee and $4.00 for a cookie. That is totally greedy. Plus all the hidden add-ons for the cost of a ticket. Some-one is getting rich fast on events like this. I'm going on Facebook and Twitter to voice my concerns. This has got to change. I realize I have to pay a higher price, but not that much. NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I LOVE SYRACUSE

The Syracuse crowds were great!!!! It was a real suprise to see all the Orange in attendance at this away basketball game. Syracuse really has a great fan base in Central Florida!!!

  • SU vs USF at the Forum

by NewYorkSunbathers on 2/7/11St Pete Times Forum - TampaRating: 5 out of 5

Great game - miss seeing live Syracuse games since moving out of the frozen tundra of upstate New York. Crowd was amazing - it was like I was at the Carrier Dome - only mini! Definately will go to more games at this venue.

  • Great Syracuse Crowd

by Gait on 2/7/11St Pete Times Forum - TampaRating: 5 out of 5

The Syracuse fans attended this game in number. Should play every Big East game @ the Forum.

  • USF basketball

by LeeGo on 2/7/11St Pete Times Forum - TampaRating: 3 out of 5

USF played a very good Syracuse team. They are in a tough conference but they played hard and I wish them a new great recruiting year.

  • by JennHuber on 2/7/11St Pete Times Forum - TampaRating: 2 out of 5

It was like we were in New York! There were hardly any USF fans.

  • by Anonymous on 2/7/11St Pete Times Forum - TampaRating: 4 out of 5

$10 to park on top of garage....heart attack walking up 5000 steps, while lower levels were fairly empty....what's with that? The game itself was great...

  • by Anonymous on 2/7/11St Pete Times Forum - TampaRating: 4 out of 5

Biggest issue we had and numerous other people had was the event was listed at two different locations. At the sundome and at the st petes forum

  • Bulls Away game

by IMFlann on 2/7/11St Pete Times Forum - TampaRating: 4 out of 5

Game was good--Syracuse has some young talent--USF is struggling without Dom Jones--turnout for Bulls was not impressive--Syracuse faithful far outnumbered home fans, as the game was basically a "home" game for Syracuse, which was a bit annoying to have been a part of. We're just not a big area for "Hoops", although I'm not stating anything new about this neck of the woods. Venue is great--seats were awesome, but next time, I'll try to attend a "home" game for the Bulls.

  • SU/USF Basketball Game

by SNJ81 on 2/7/11St Pete Times Forum - TampaRating: 4 out of 5

Forum is a very nice venue. Seats were very good (section 218). Looked like and SU home game (crowd was mostly dressed in Orange). Orange won convincingly. Consessions seemed very expensive. Parking in nearby garage was convenient.
