South Florida Bulls Men’s Basketball History

The South Florida Bulls men's basketball team first took the court in 1971 as the Golden Brahmans in what is now NCAA Division II, but quickly made the jump to Division I in 1973. The Bulls joined the Sun Belt Conference in 1976 and made further moves to the Metro Conference in 1991, Conference USA in 1995, the Big East in 2005 and The American in 2013.

The Bulls, who adopted their current mascot in 1980, have made three appearances in the NCAA Tournament, in 1990, 1992 and 2012, and advanced the furthest to the Round of 32 in their most recent outing. In 1990, the team won the conference tournament championship as members of the Sun Belt Conference. USF has also competed in the National Invitation Tournament nine times, as well as the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) once, where the Bulls claimed the tournament championship in 2019.

For the 2023-24 season, late head coach Amir Abdur-Rahim led the Bulls to a program-best 25-8 overall record and a 16-2 conference record to claim their first regular season conference championship. The Bulls also achieved their first national ranking on the AP Top 25 College Basketball Poll, while Abdur-Rahim was named the American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Following Abdur-Rahim’s passing in October 2024, USF announced their hiring of Arkansas State head coach Bryan Hodgson.

South Florida Bulls Men’s Basketball at Yuengling Center

USF men’s basketball plays at Yuengling Center on the University of South Florida campus in Tampa, Florida. Opened in 1980, the 10,500-seat venue was originally named the USF Sun Dome until 2018, but it has also earned the nickname the “Rose Garden” after the exceptional Bulls gameplay under head coach Lee Rose between 1980 and 1986. Following the unexpected death of first-year coach Amir Abdur-Rahim in 2024, the arena’s spirited So Flo Rodeo student section was officially dedicated in his honor. A $35.6 million renovation was completed in 2012.

After playing from behind basically the entire game, the Bulls finally stormed ahead during the final minutes to pull it out. A lot of scoring in the second half which brought th eexcitement up a few notches. Seats were inexpensive and it was a fun atmosphere.

Great game, great facility......GO BULLS! USF basketball is starting to take off

  • Good game, good environment, small issues.

    by Jaultma2 on 2/17/10USF Sun Dome - TampaRating: 4 out of 5

The only issue I really had was that there was someone sitting in my seat and they were quite rude when i asked them to move. I know USF basketball hasn't been good in a long time and as a former student I remember going to games and being able to sit wherever you wanted because it was extremely likely the actual seatholder wasn't coming. That being said it was a frustration and the only blemish on an otherwise good evening of basketball.

Food was great, all you can drink was a definite plus. Wasn't crowded so no lines for food or drinks.

the sun dome is small and taking the one end for big time donors is not good put them in sky boxes. and let the kids set in the end sets.

  • game and cabana awesome

by rbta on 2/1/10USF Sun Dome - TampaRating: 5 out of 5

had a great time food and beverages were perfect., everyone was nice and the service was unbeatable best of all usf beat pitt what a win . my guest is an die hard pitt fan and came down from pittsburgh for the event. he also enjoyed the venue and cant wait ot come back. nothing like this at pitt home games.

  • USF Bulls

by Zozie on 2/1/10USF Sun Dome - TampaRating: 4 out of 5

The basketball game was great. However, the tickets bought through ticketmaster were for seats in the middle of the Pittsburgh fans and we are USF fans, so not so cool. The three guys who sat directly behind us were especially annoying screaming loudly for Pitt the entire time, even singing the song the band played...We had to move at half time and find other seats where we could enjoy the game without going deaf and where we were able to cheer for our home team without ridicule and grief from the surrounding fans.

Well organized event. The building was very clean. Special events during the game and half time were very interesting. Big plus the Bulls won!!

  • Great Jump Start

by Anonymous on 2/1/10USF Sun Dome - TampaRating: 5 out of 5

The Bulls jump started the game with a lead that never folded... Great excitement watching the Bulls hustling and dropping in the baskets... Nice going guys...!

  • Long line

by sorrysally on 2/1/10USF Sun Dome - TampaRating: 3 out of 5

The game was ok, seats were pretty good, but the WILL CALL line had only one person working and the line was so long we missed the beginning of the game. USF should have known Pitt would be a large draw and had extra people working! After all, they knew in advance how many will call tickets there were to be picked up!

  • Bulls were fantastic!

by Edswife on 2/1/10USF Sun Dome - TampaRating: 4 out of 5

While the shooting percentages from the field were not great, the Bulls did their job on the free throw line to knock off the Panthers from Pittsburgh Sunday afternoon.

  • Courtside Cabana was awesome!!

by jobremi on 2/1/10USF Sun Dome - TampaRating: 5 out of 5

I took my wife & son to the USF-Pitt game Sunday & had a GREAT time (except for Pitt losing)!!! With the Cabana tickets we were able to enter the arena prior to regular seat ticket holders which was nice due to the chilly weather. When we entered the arena we were pleasantly surprised to see that we would be in a "special" area where wristbands were required to enter. The area was nicely set up with couches, high tables, a carving station & other miscellaneous food stations & a beer, wine, soda & water bar all in a carpeted area. All staff members were very professional, courteous, friendly & helpful. We were also pleasantly surprised to find out that we could sit in any of the seats right behind the hoop. We sat in the 1st row & could hear the players "chatting" between & during plays. I would highly recommend this ticket to anyone!!

  • USF Men's Basketball

by Netterp on 1/29/10USF Sun Dome - TampaRating: 5 out of 5

The game against Seton Hall was a real nail biting screamer right until the end! Really good game and the fans were really nice.

  • Entertaining

by ZIGS on 1/29/10USF Sun Dome - TampaRating: 4 out of 5

A very entertaining college basketball game that went down to the wire and then into overtime.

  • USF Vs. WVU

by IslandDad on 1/14/10USF Sun Dome - TampaRating: 4 out of 5

Great game! My children loved it. It would have of course been better if the Bulls would have won, but great game none the less.

  • Had a ball

by leftywrite on 1/14/10USF Sun Dome - TampaRating: 4 out of 5

The Sun Dome is a good venue for college basketball. It is easily accessible. Parking is convenient. Food and beverages are available. Fans are pretty enthusiastic even if the game is pretty much a blowout. In addition to the main event there is enjoyably cheesy entertainment that ranges from Hootie the Hooters owl to kids trying to sling shot a taco through the basketball hoop. A good evening's entertainment.
