South Florida Bulls Men’s Basketball History

The South Florida Bulls men's basketball team first took the court in 1971 as the Golden Brahmans in what is now NCAA Division II, but quickly made the jump to Division I in 1973. The Bulls joined the Sun Belt Conference in 1976 and made further moves to the Metro Conference in 1991, Conference USA in 1995, the Big East in 2005 and The American in 2013.

The Bulls, who adopted their current mascot in 1980, have made three appearances in the NCAA Tournament, in 1990, 1992 and 2012, and advanced the furthest to the Round of 32 in their most recent outing. In 1990, the team won the conference tournament championship as members of the Sun Belt Conference. USF has also competed in the National Invitation Tournament nine times, as well as the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) once, where the Bulls claimed the tournament championship in 2019.

For the 2023-24 season, late head coach Amir Abdur-Rahim led the Bulls to a program-best 25-8 overall record and a 16-2 conference record to claim their first regular season conference championship. The Bulls also achieved their first national ranking on the AP Top 25 College Basketball Poll, while Abdur-Rahim was named the American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Following Abdur-Rahim’s passing in October 2024, USF announced their hiring of Arkansas State head coach Bryan Hodgson.

South Florida Bulls Men’s Basketball at Yuengling Center

USF men’s basketball plays at Yuengling Center on the University of South Florida campus in Tampa, Florida. Opened in 1980, the 10,500-seat venue was originally named the USF Sun Dome until 2018, but it has also earned the nickname the “Rose Garden” after the exceptional Bulls gameplay under head coach Lee Rose between 1980 and 1986. Following the unexpected death of first-year coach Amir Abdur-Rahim in 2024, the arena’s spirited So Flo Rodeo student section was officially dedicated in his honor. A $35.6 million renovation was completed in 2012.

We were told we purchased the best seats available, but there were many (more than a thousand) much better seats unoccupied for the entire game.

  • USF vs UCONN

With seats available in lower arena, was wondering why only seats available when we went online were in row X in upper section

  • PICK BETTER SEATS

by WTFITZ on 3/5/14USF Sun Dome - TampaRating: 4 out of 5

This is my third trip to the Sun Dome. The first two trips were great. Nice clean, spacious, facility, with very good parking.Traffic arriving & leaving was very well directed.Seats are comfortable with good viewing. USF puts on a good show, with lots of cheerleaders etc. They badly need venders in the isles in sections 202 & 203 [plus maybe others] People were needing something to drink, but these sections are too hard to get to,so no one wanted to go to the refreshment stands or bathrooms. Especially don't buy tickets in these sections if you are elderly.

  • Exiting close game!

Very nice arena and smooth entering and exiting. The game was surprisingly close. Not always well played but exiting.

  • Great place to watch a good game.

First time at USF to see a basketball game. I don't think there is a bad seat in this place. Great time to watch an exciting game.

We took our daughter for her 13th birthday and her bff. We all had a great time. Everyone was very nice and fun. We will definitely attend another basketball game. It was also good for the girls to see university students in action. We arrived early enough to sit in on a coupe of innings of girls softball.

  • Fun USF Family Day

by xominimo on 2/18/14USF Sun Dome - TampaRating: 5 out of 5

It was a fun game! Close until the end when UCF got that last night to win by one point. Regardless, I'm a bull for life and will always love my bulls. It was another great family day at USF.

  • Go Cards

    by Liberty1 on 1/28/14USF Sun Dome - TampaRating: 5 out of 5

I had never been to the Sun Dome it is really nice! The parking was easy thought expensive. At The O'Connell Stadium it's free in Gainsville but the Dome is nice and being a Tampa Resident will definitely return!

A pleasure to access and see my favorite team play. Staff was helpful and informative. I knew ahead of time that my seats were higher than I am used to. Thank you for providing me access.

  • USF Basketball is very exciting!

    by SueBQ1977 on 1/21/14USF Sun Dome - TampaRating: 4 out of 5

The game was a challenge and it was great to see them play the Cincinnati Bearcats (near my hometown). Just being with a college group can be invigorating.

  • Bama lost

by RTRR on 12/10/13USF Sun Dome - TampaRating: 5 out of 5

very good seats for the price, right behind visitors bench where we wanted

  • Unfriendly arena

    by Mike3925 on 3/8/13USF Sun Dome - TampaRating: 4 out of 5

UConn played without two key players which made the score lopsided in favor of the Bulls. I guess the renovation created a few new seats, but getting to and from seats on the 2nd tier was a real chore. All the way up to the top, across the back of a section or two then back down to the bottom to get to the restrooms or food stands

The USF Basketball team was uninspired and played a lackluster game. Very disappointed.
