About

Shen Yun Performing Arts is a triumph of collaboration, bringing together over a hundred of the world's foremost classically trained Chinese dancers, choreographers, musicians, and vocalists. It also boasts the world's only full orchestra that embraces both Western and Chinese instruments as its permanent members.

Based in New York, Shen Yun Performing Arts is distinguished by its conscious effort to remain independent of China's communist regime, which has abused and impoverished the arts for decades. It is proud to thus include members who practice Falun Gong. The company aspires to create original performances that not only entertain, but also more deeply educate, enrich, and inspire. The company's rich repertory is drawn from the pages of history, universal themes, and the world around us. All choreography and music performed are original.

    Very very dissappointed!!!!

by PCster on 12/26/10Jones Hall - Houston

I thought it was false advertising. The couple beside us left early. Two people in front of us fell asleep. I did not hear one positive from others walking out and in the stairs or the parking lot. The dancsing was average, the hosts were boaring. Sorry but I wish I could get my money back. I just saw nutcracker 2 days before for $50, it was amazing and then $120 for Poor entertainment.

    Beautiful

by dutchinge on 12/26/10Jones Hall - Houston

The music was beautiful, especially the incorporation of the traditional Chinese instruments into the Western orchestra. The soloist were okay but I could have done without them although I did like the contents of their songs. The Soprano was worst of all, sang too loud. The dances, movements, costumes and decor were exquisite. There was a lot of energy in the dance. The Falun Dafa theme was repeated 3 times and that was a bit too much. Overall a great show and the MCs made it easy for the viewers to understand the meaning of the dances.

    Shen Yun

by bluesbroadtx on 12/26/10Jones Hall - Houston

Not at all what I expected - which was classic Chinese dance. The dancing was good, although each little dance was to brief. However this production's purpose seems to have been to to impart the teachings of Falun Dafa to the audience. Saying that, the costumes were quite nice and the staging interesting, and the dancers were quite talented.

An interesting insight into Chinese culture

by 1amuzed on 12/26/10National Arts Centre - Ottawa

The event was to say the least an interesting insight into chinese culture over the centuries. The costumes and songs as well as the interpretations were unique. I would have to say the illustrations of the plight of chinese people were reflected well in the dramatizations of the actors although the commentary by the MCs seemed to over-emphasize the political situation. Kudos to the actors and musicians for the an excellent performance. I would recommend this show to my friends.

    Shen Yun was lackluster

by Euni on 12/25/10Jones Hall - Houston

We found Shen Yun to be mediocre and not worth the price of our ticket. We would have left at intermission but the theatre was less then half full so we stayed hoping the second half would be more thrilling....not so.

My daughter and I (the father) went to this performance for the first time and was amazed at the great performance and attention to detail to tell the story of the Chinese culture. We are looking forward to next year!

We enjoyed it a lot and wish the show could have been more fluid with simultaneous translations for the masters of ceremony. Tickets were a little pricey for a family of 4. We were quite surprised that half of the theater was empty. Was it because of the day Wednesday 22 of December or something else?.I notice very few asian people in the theater and was expecting a lot more. Is this because they do not recognize this group as being really from China?. In any case. The dancer were good and well rehearsed. I think I was expecting one more singer because 4 were in the program but I recall only three. My kids thought the projected graphics were cheesy but I was OK with them.

Shen Yun HD color of China!!!

by Woodpaq on 12/24/10Jones Hall - Houston

Folks, all I have to begin with is: Color Color Color!!!! This is what a ballet can be with all the imagination and pageantry of theater, song, storytelling, fables, moving music with the blend of Ancient eastern and modern western music, out-of-this-world choreography and dance mechanics that defy gravity and human form. The clothing and colors of each set were stunning, as if amplified of color and textures. The flowing motion and rhythmic acrobatics were simply breathtaking. I really enjoyed the opera singers as well, such passion and expression, and the overall arrangement between the ballet, theater and song were well done and each one gives the performance a break, or a twist to keep the audience's attention. Two thumbs up!!!!

    Painful

by Geesje on 12/24/10Jones Hall - Houston

The orchestra was great, some of the dancers were great. But I felt like I was present at a High School amateur night. The performances were okay, but short. The presenters that came out after/before every piece were painful; their announcements were too long and their jokes just very lame. We left fifteen minutes before it ended, because we couldn't take it anymore.

    Shen Yun

by THartline on 12/23/10Jones Hall - Houston

Outstanding dance, orchestra and singing performances from start to finish and both emcees were spot on with their insights and linguistic skills in english and mandarin. The skills of all the performers was outstanding, styles and costumes were brilliant to see and the backdrops and landscapes brought the audience to see parts of China they probably have never experienced. We enjoyed all of the entertainment with the exception of the faith messages they were promoting.

The best show I have ever seen!

by BillHua on 12/19/10Civic Opera House - Chicago

It's a really top-level show! Very glad to see that Shenyun come back to Chicago again. I saw the show in Columbus OH. O, it's gorgeour. The combination of live orchestra and dance/song, the combination of modern society and ancient story, the combination of the stage and 3D animated backdrop, the combination of reality and the fairyland...Can't wait to see it asap!

Entering middle-age, less and less things could touch my heart. I was touched to tears when I watched this show in Milwaukee early this April. I couldn't tell what exactly touched my heart, I just could not help but crying serval times during the show. I felt something from the very very deep of my heart resonating with what is being played on the stage, the tranquility, the virture, the persistence...

First saw the show two years ago, have been going every year. Really enjoy the performance and the message the show carries. These days most performance carries messages that are quite negative, it's so hard to find artistically wonderful and also educational shows like Shen Yun. I would recommend it to people, especially if you want to do something wonderful together as a family.

    Absolutely the Best Show Ever!

    by Seeker1 on 12/9/10Jones Hall - Houston

I've seen Shen Yun at least 2 times, and each time it takes you to a most wonderful place both outside and inside. It makes your whole being just tingle! One simply bathes in the beauty of the music, dances, and colorful costumes while the mind and heart is lifted ever, and ever higher by the stories that are presented and the songs that are sung. China's history in it's purest and finest form... So hard to put into words....it is a "must- see" kind of show...at least once in your lifetime!!!

Such an amazing show! Can't wait to see it again!

by EvelynSi on 12/1/10Civic opera house - Chicago

You do NOT want to miss this show. Seriously. It’s purely AMAZING. The choreography was so extraordinary, and the lavishly colorful costumes were so beautiful. The dancers were extremely agile and the lines were so perfect. I like it that they put on an animated backdrop that added depth to the performance, and also let you grab the storyline more easily. It has an astounding visual effect. Though it’s presenting Chinese legends and history (in the tastiest artistic form), I did not have any difficulty in understanding the content. Oh, and the music, it could only be called heavenly! I was fortunate enough to get a seat close to the orchestra pit. Never seen that kind of orchestra before! Elegant Chinese musical instruments added on to violins and trumpets, producing a unique sound effect – very soothing, very uplifting. If only Shen Yun could release the soundtracks. Overall, this is definitely a worthy and enriching experience. I can’t wait to see it again!

Had some really good dancers, awsome lines, and a lot of really well cordinated moves during the ribbon dances with multiple dancers. Over all I loved it.
