Shen Yun was out of this world!!

by ZackSt on 3/11/11Orpheum Theater and Robinson Center Music Hall, - Memphis and Little Rock

I got to see Shen Yun twice this year (2011). I was astounded by the skill of the dancers, which was true perfection. Then the digital backdrop which was very pleasing to the eye. The orchestra sounded magnificent while the Chinese instruments were different, but sounded good. The costumes and props were very full of color, vibrant, and well designed. The portrayal of ethnicity broadened my perspective; the Mongolian dance and Plum Blossom were especially astonishing in terms of acrobatic feats and choreography and the story-based dances let me in on the richness of China's 5000 year culture. The best one was probably the story of Creation; the dancing and costumes in this one were extraordinary! The one about the monk who drank and fought bad guys was classic. The stories of present day, where Falun Gong practitioners being persecuted was beautifully portrayed, and I felt both sadness and hope while watching them. From these pieces, I teared up several times, in a completely good way. Interwoven throughout, I received this message: Being good brings goodness, while being bad begets ill returns. I sincerely express my appreciation to Shen Yun for gracing me with this performance that everyone should really go see for themselves. It's 5 stars, and amazing!

    Shen Yun

by singleGR on 3/11/11Ohio Theatre - Columbus

The first half of the show was boring and basic dance moves. I thought I was back watching my 7 yr old daughter in a dance recital except they had more expensive costumes. Really bad.......The 2nd half was better - more involved with stories and dances to tell the stories. The screen with the dancers moving on/off the screen was very different and very interesting. The singing used very talented singers, words were displayed to us that don't speak the language, but no tune that anyone knew and seemed to be repeated over and over again just to stretch the song. I expected to see lots of really complicated dances, jumps, involvement of swords or dragons or something. Comic relief attempted by the emcees fell flat.........even the chinese sitting in front of me were bored. Pyrotechnics were expected as the Chinese founded them - even inside they could have accomplished it. Again, very boring and basic stuff and I definitely felt that I didn't get my money's worth.

OK ONLY because my Dad was laughing the whole time

by OrangePanda on 3/10/11Cobb Energy Center - Atlanta

The performance wasn't what I expected. I thought it was going to be WAY better. My neighbor in the theatre asked me "was this what you expected?" That's how boring it was. After intermission he left the show. I think this was a nice show if you like performances without a lot of action. I paid 145 for two tickets so I expected to be entertained. It was a very traditional Chinese dance. The best thing about the performance was the costumes they were extremely beautiful. I took my dad to see this performance and was kind of embarrassed that I took him because it was so boring. and because he knew I paid so much for the tickets. Tickets weren't worth the value. The best thing about the performance was my dad’s jokes throughout the performance. Not about the show just in general. My Dad enjoyed it of course because I was taking him out but the performance wasn't worth the money at all. Most of the seats were empty, I guess I missed the memo about how boring the performance was. They used a projector as the set which was kind of corny. The performances were extremely cheesy. The highlight of the night was my coke and king size bags of m&m's. The billboard made the performance look so interesting but trust me it was a FACADE. But now I can say I've went and I won't be going back next year or feel like I missed out on anything. If you are second guessing going like I was then don’t go. But at the same time it looked like all the performers put in a lot of hard work. The performers had great intentions.

The music was wonderful. The dancers were very good and the outfits were beautiful. Some dancing was repetitious, but it was overall a very nice performance.

    Fantastic costumes

by lrgirl on 3/8/11Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

My husband, our 8yr old daughter and I attended Shen Yun. We had no idea what to expect. The costumes and dancing were fantastic. The narrators provided a much needed service by giving an introduction for each piece. Otherwise we would not have necessarily understood the symbolism of each segment. Even so, I think I only understood some of the pieces. It was enjoyable nonetheless. We will probably return in 2 years when our other daughter is 5, but I don't know if we'd necessarily come again after that. It's not something I would need to see over and over.

Shen Yun a treat for the eyes and ears

by cagey17 on 3/8/11Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the glimpse into ancient Chinese culture as brought to light by the fantastic Shen Yun troop. Their perfomance exemplifies beauty and grace as well as a spiritualism that is sadly no longer looked upon favorably in China today. We can only admire the committment and dedication that it ceratinly must take to perform the intricate dance moves at the high level demonstrated throughout the show. We highly recommend the Shen Yun show for anyone looking to expand their knowledge of this ancient culture and/or to just enjoy a beautiful blending of sights and sounds that take you to a place that few of us will ever see.

Shen Yun, the most spectacular show EVER!(:

by JazNatalia on 3/7/11Robinson Center Music Hall - Little Rock

Shen Yun is the most beautiful show you will ever see. The dance, choreography, music, clothes etc. all beautiful. I love the way the dancers move their feet and body in a vey delicate matter and how they are so flexible!! The choreography is A M A Z I N G! It just goes with the music, backdrop, clothes, EVERYTHING!! When i sit and watch the show, i feel so peaceful and the beauty just brought tears to my eyes. I've seen so many ballets, folk dances, etc. overall i'd say Shen Yun is the ABSOLUTE best show i have ever seen. The facial expressions are very unique, unlike ballet. You can acctually FEEL the way the dance is supposed to be, whether it is happy, sad, or anything! Unlike ballet, they do this so well! I love the music too. I have never heard music so beautiful like Shen Yun's before. They have the western and the chinese instruments. I love the erhu, a chinese instrument, which only has two strings! You'd think that an instument with only two strings wont make so many different sounds, but it does!!!! wonderfully!!!! I would recomend this show to anyone and everyone. To me, i feel that nobody should miss this incredible show. Its not only an entertainment, but it is also very educational that contains 5,000 years of chinese history.

    Shen Yun was great!

by mommadance on 3/7/11Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

The dancing was precise, beautiful and difficult. The costumes and scene sets were very colorful and bright. Enjoyed the history of China as it was portrayed through dance. The male dancers did amazing acrobatics and again the timing of the dancers was amazing. I would go and see them again.

Beautiful dancing but heavy-handed hidden messages

by Winnychan on 3/7/11Ohio Theatre - Columbus

I enjoyed the dancing and costumes, and the story telling in some of the pieces like the mischievous monks and the one about the drunken monk hero. However this production overall felt like a vehicle for the Falun Dafa association and how their religion is being oppressed and driven out of modern China. The teacher being beaten in front of children by figures who are supposedly the Chinese police but dressed and portrayed like evil ninja with big red communist logos on their backs... And then after people have been killed by ninjas (that's right, murder by commie police ninjas happens more than once in this production) there's always this big production of angels that come down from the sky to take to the faithful martyrs to heaven while their family looks on and waves in gratitude. Yyyyyeah. Maybe I'm a horrible shallow person, but all of this was kind of unexpected and uncomfortable to watch. All the songs performed in the piece were flowery praise to this oppressed religion and not very powerful... maybe it was just all lost in translation, but with all the repetition of only so-so imagery I found myself kind of bored and hoping it would be over soon. By contrast, the dancing was quite good, especially the bright vivid colors of the costuming and creative use of props all made this an enjoyable event. The plum flower dance with the pink feathery fans was incredible and took the breath away. I DID enjoy myself overall so I feel a little bit bad about leaving such a mixed review. But I can't help feeling just a little duped.

    Event was great... crowd wasn't

    by MJ07 on 3/7/11Ohio Theatre - Columbus

The show was spectacular when it wasn't interrupted by giggling, immature audience. The view and sound was great! The problem?.... a row of teenagers behind us that whispered the whole time and a row of children beside me that kept giggling, eating, fidgeting and being an overall nuisance. I wish the theatre would not permit eating in the theatre. The smell and sound took away from the enjoyment of the event. The cost of the show is very expensive and something my husband and I can only do on very special occasions. It is sad when people disrespect your space and don't attend to their children. My husband and I are not going to another show because it is too expensive for the rudeness of the audience. This is our third attempt at having a quiet, pleasant time at the theatre. No more.

    Shen Yun was Beautiful

Loved this performance of traditional chinese dance. Especially loved the narrative before each segment explaining the history and interpretation of each dance. The costumes were beautiful, the staging was awesome. Dancing was suburb!

    An amazing show

by ColumbusOhio on 3/6/11Ohio Theatre - Columbus

This Chinese culture show dazzled with amazing choreography and music. The singers and dancers were the next thing to perfection! My 9 year old daughter was spellbound and loved the gorgeous costumes. Even the backdrops for the performances were beautiful. The thing that I liked least was that there were too many political statement performances (complete with dancing military police). I understand that this is a part of China's history and occurs even today, but one or two performances would have been enough to inform the audience. Otherwise, it is a great show that I would highly recommend.

    Shen Yun was too political

by Kaylon on 3/5/11Ohio Theatre - Columbus

The narrative made the show to choppy and the narratives were about the civil rights violations in China. We thought we were going to see a fantastic dance show not be lectured.
