SHAKEY GRAVES IN CONCERT:

Stripped-down folk rock act Shakey Graves has long been a favorite in his native city of Austin, but lately he's been making waves far beyond the borders of the Lone Star State. Taking the stage with a jerry-rigged drum kit that includes a suitcase, Shakey Graves, a.k.a. Alejandro Rose Garcia, captivates audiences with a variety of idiosyncratic techniques including unexpected tempo changes, drastic register shifts, and his off-kilter lyric sensibility. Whether he's crooning on "Built to Roam" or creating an intricate percussion backdrop on "Roll the Bones", Shakey Graves always satisfies on his unforgettable tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Shakey Graves is the one-man band of Alejandro Rose Garcia, an actor turned singer-songwriter who launched the project in 2009 while living in Los Angeles. After cutting his teeth in LA's eclectic underground folk scene he returned to his hometown of Austin, TX, where he quickly became a huge local draw with his unique performances at venues on and around artsy Annie Street. In 2011 he released Roll the Bones, wowing critics with his creative, lo-fi take on traditional folk and receiving a nod from NPR, which named him one of ten artists fans "should've known in 2012." He followed up with the Donor Blues EP in 2012, a bluesy slice of poetic folk that drew another round of praise. As renowned for his one-man performances as he is for his recordings, Shakey Graves continues to stun on his must-see tours.

    only came for flipturn

by jessmag on 10/14/23Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

I think similar to a play or hockey game, guests should not be allowed to find their seats during a song, I find that that’s extremely rude and disrespectful to the performers. People should wait until the song ends for them to find their seats. The lights were too bright & the audio could have been better. Comparing to the Vogue Theatre, which has much better sound. Seats are very close together but I understand there’s nothing you can fix there.

    awkward experience

by nicki d on 10/14/23Paramount Theatre - Seattle

It was a very weird show… the lights never were shining on Shakey Graves / the lead singer. Instead, bright / uncomfortable lights were pointed at the audience and anywhere except center stage. I don’t know if that’s his style or a production mistake? Regardless, he has a great voice but feel like the show didn’t reflect that / we got tired of squinting and trying to see him on stage and left early.

The concert gave me a headache.

by GravyShaken on 10/13/23Paramount Theatre - Seattle

After this concert I stopped liking Shakey Graves. It is rare, every now and then a concert is so bad you stop liking the artist you use to like. I never commented on the lighting on a show. Usually you notice the lighting because they do something cool but in this concert the light (many of them ) were shining at full intensity at the audience, interrogation style, like torture room style. I legit got a headache. The stage however was completely dark , I couldn’t tell where the artist was or if the band was on the stage or not. Maybe they were running a social experiment on torturing the audience, who knows. I blame the artist. At some point the spotlight was on him for about 2 sec and he stopped the concert . But what about the music you may ask, well he opened by teasing and rifting on his biggest hit but he never quite played the song, then he went into a bunch of songs I never heard, solo ballads, just him and his guitar. It may had worked on a 200 seat venue without torture lights shining on your eyes. But this venues was about 3000 seats. For the encore he half played his other popular song. Seemed like one of those artist that resent playing the song that made them famous. TLDR: terrible show. Don’t watch him live. Maybe he prefer that sweeet Spotify money instead of touring

Good staff, Great Music, Wrong Crowd

by tom on 10/3/23Ace of Spades - Sacramento

I came for flipturn. The event staff were friendly and everything with the venue went smoothly. The crowd was a bit rude. My little sister was there and the ladies in front and to the side were pushing her around because she was tiny. I really did not appreciate that.

    Great show

by OldLadyRay on 10/3/23Ace of Spades - Sacramento

First show for me at the Ace of Spades. We’re middle aged so opted for seats which I would do again. Opening act was great, Shakey Graves was great. I recommend.

One of the best live shows I have seen

by James N on 10/3/23Ace of Spades - Sacramento

At first I was not sure how the show was going to go. It was immediately evident that he knows how to engage a crowd, but starting with all new album songs seemed confusing. At times it felt like the crowd was getting lost because they wanted to hits they knew. However, once he ended the show I got it. With the entire band, he really elevated the new album. It gave vibrancy and energy to the songs in ways not even captured on the album. The lighting was artfully chosen to create a silhouette of each member only. If you didn’t know Shakey was in the center you wouldn’t know which he was. Such a cool way to honor the band. The songs really hit hard. Throughout, he engaged the crowd conversationally and I don’t know if I have felt more connected to a frontman than this. As he transitioned to his most popular song, the band left and his biggest hit turned into a sing along with the crowd. He showcased his ability to remix the song on the fly, changing the pace and adding in humor. He then proceeded to play solo for many of the older hits, explaining the logic behind the song writing, and showing the vulnerability to explain the youthful mind that wrote many of them. His guitar playing skills blew me away, as did his ability to emote energy and soul in his songs. It exceeded all expectation, and my bar was set high coming into the show. He returned for an encore with the entire band, first playing a newer song that sounded wonderful and finishing with a classic favorite after a story about loving and recognizing the friends and family who are with us and those we might have lost touch with over the pandemic. The band only elevated the classic song, and he performed a new version of it that accentuated the band. It was a beautiful performance and my girlfriend and I left just blown away. Small venues really highlight how talented this man is. I hope you all get a chance to see him live. You will not regret it!

    Phenomenal Show

by Lindsey on 9/29/23The Sound - Del Mar

I had only ever heard Roll the Bones but I love live music and Shakey Graves happened to be coming to San Diego while I was in town visiting friends and family. I’ve been to hundreds of concerts, literally, and this had to be top 3. Shakey Graves is a natural performer and he and his band both are incredibly talented. I was mesmerized. I’m not sure what I was expecting but I know I wasn’t expecting the show to be THAT good. I am now a fan and am so glad I decided to buy these tickets on a whim. If you haven’t seen him, YOU ARE MISSING OUT!

    SHAKEY GRAVES

by MARTY on 9/24/23The Van Buren - Phoenix

LOVE THE BANDS , BUT THE VAN BUREN IS NOT AS GOOD AS IT USED TO BE SINCE WAS BOUGHT OUT BY LIVE NATION. RIDICULOUS THAT YOU CAN ONLY GET SEATING UPSTAIRS...AND HANDICAP IN THE BACK BY ALL THE NOISE MAKES IT HARD TO HEAR AND SEE THE BANDS. ALSO HARDLY ANY BANDS COMPARED TO WHAT USED TO BE THERE BEFORE LIVE NATION.

Opening musician should have matched the vibe

by Shakey rocks, that opener though… on 9/24/23The Van Buren - Phoenix

I’m a huge shakey graves fan and love his rock and roll/folk/country fusion. The opening musician (don’t know his name) was a completely different genre and during many songs there was some weird Disney-like music playing. Really gross. We couldn’t stand it so we had to go outside to wait for shakey to come on. So we lost our good spot next to the stage and had to be in the back. Still upset that tickets were not cheap and half of the show was complete garbage.

    Did Shakey Graves Even Play?

    by Trish on 8/20/23

Evidently bored & tired of touring, Shakey Graves announced they were mixing things up. They altered their music into various genres. (surf/death metal/reggae/depressed). This made their songs unrecognizable. Not even the same mood. They should have done that on their own dime, not mine. I LOVE this concert venue but Shakey Graves robbed their fans. By the time they started playing recognizable songs, we'd left the stage because we were heading home.

    Best SG Show Yet

    by Steve on 8/19/23

So, this was the third time I have seen SG, and by far, this was the best, most entertaining, engaging, and energetic show yet. SG is probably one of the best frontmen/artists I have had the pleasure of seeing and hearings. The format for this show was great. After the opening song, SG and band did a portion where they had a audience member randomly choose the name of a SG song from his shirt pocket and another audience member choose the style (funk, metal) from his other pocket and the band would perform the song in that fashion. It was amazing- genius in action, What incredible musicians! After that portion, SG did several solo numbers with his kick-suitcase, and was rejoined by the band for the final song of the show plus a Dearly Departed encore. The band left the stage, but SG remained behind and did a final, unexoected solo encore. Every time I see SG, I want to see him again!

    Lucius is Luscious

    by AriHell on 8/18/23

Love the space - everything was easy, and it didn't feel over crowded. There isn't a bad sightline to be had. Can Shakey Graves and Lucius play there every year?

    Lucius and SG are great

    by Erin on 8/18/23

Both bands are amazing. The venue is so fun and lines aren’t bad getting in. Concessions not bad, either. I always have a good time at this venue.

    Venue seating

    by Kelly on 8/6/23

The bands were great, the venue was great. The seating situation needs improvement. Blankets or standing were the only two options. Not sure why. Allowing chairs would have made it a much more enjoyable experience. The ground was hard and miserable!!

    Little short

    by George on 8/5/23

Shakey Graves played a really great set here in Louisville Ky. That being said, there were a few songs missing from the set and since the show was over early. I feel it was a missed opportunity to play a few more songs in the end. He played here in Late July that would have been special since it was July 30. Also thought that set could have been 2 songs longer overall really great. Nothing wrong with any of the show sound was good, energy was good. Just that it will be some time before he is back always play more

    Want a fantastic show!

    by Sgt2025 on 8/2/23

So let me start out by saying my wife wanted to go to this show. She and I have completely different tastes in music. So I had never heard any of Shakes’ music before that night. What i can say is I have never seen an artist more in tune with the crowd. His participation with the crowd was absolutely amazing! He broke 2 microphone stands in 5 mins. We all laughed, we all sang along, we all had a great time. I started listening to his music because of that show. On the off chance Shakey might read this. I have to say thank you! In all my years of going to concerts, I have never had as much fun as I had that night. Your energy really made it an amazing experience! I look forward to seeing you come back.
