SHAKEY GRAVES IN CONCERT:

Stripped-down folk rock act Shakey Graves has long been a favorite in his native city of Austin, but lately he's been making waves far beyond the borders of the Lone Star State. Taking the stage with a jerry-rigged drum kit that includes a suitcase, Shakey Graves, a.k.a. Alejandro Rose Garcia, captivates audiences with a variety of idiosyncratic techniques including unexpected tempo changes, drastic register shifts, and his off-kilter lyric sensibility. Whether he's crooning on "Built to Roam" or creating an intricate percussion backdrop on "Roll the Bones", Shakey Graves always satisfies on his unforgettable tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Shakey Graves is the one-man band of Alejandro Rose Garcia, an actor turned singer-songwriter who launched the project in 2009 while living in Los Angeles. After cutting his teeth in LA's eclectic underground folk scene he returned to his hometown of Austin, TX, where he quickly became a huge local draw with his unique performances at venues on and around artsy Annie Street. In 2011 he released Roll the Bones, wowing critics with his creative, lo-fi take on traditional folk and receiving a nod from NPR, which named him one of ten artists fans "should've known in 2012." He followed up with the Donor Blues EP in 2012, a bluesy slice of poetic folk that drew another round of praise. As renowned for his one-man performances as he is for his recordings, Shakey Graves continues to stun on his must-see tours.

I love Shakey! He and the band sounded amazing! I just wish they played more songs and songs off his new album. The concert was just over an hour :(

    Love Him!

    by PghMomof5 on 11/13/23Roxian Theatre - Pittsburgh

The show was amazing! Luckily we had seats, because the venue was filled, and most of GA areas you couldn't see the stage if you were less than 6-ft tall! The vibe in GA was amazing, so despite not being able to really see, the concert was still amazing!

    An absolutely marvelous concert

by Pgh Bob on 11/13/23Roxian Theatre - Pittsburgh

Shakey Graves gave a powerful performance - I expected his superb guitar playing, but his voice blew me away; recordings didn't prepare me for how good he is live. The entire band was great as well, with the show alternating full band songs with songs with just Shakey, his guitar, and drum suitcase. Shakey's vocals were occasionally a little lost in the mix in full-band songs is the only nit I can think of to pick. One of the best concerts I have been to. I am now a confirmed fan, and will see Shake Graves any time I possibly can.

    Cringe Moment with Audience Member

by Jayne S. on 10/31/23Moody Amphitheater - Austin

In the middle of the show, Shaky Graves stopped to call out an audience member who was trying to get his attention. He stopped between songs to address her saying that she would not be coming up on stage. It felt totally awkward, inappropriate, and unprofessional to stop the show in order to say something to one person in the audience. First, he should have ignored her like any other professional artist or performer who might have overactive fans in the audience. Second, he should have paused himself, removing himself from the stage under the pretense of a water break or fixing a guitar string or something, in order to privately ask security to remove her or consult with her. His reaction brought down the whole tenor of the show and made everyone feel uncomfortable. I went to this show only to see Flipturn and did not know who Shaky Graves was before I got there. I liked his music at first but his rude behavior interacting with this audience member made me never want to support to him again. Whoever the audience member was deserves an apology and his management team needs to consult with him about performer professionalism.

Shakey shakes it up in Houston

by Thom on 10/31/23White Oak Music Hall - Pulse Power Stage on the Lawn - Houston

An amazing show. It was our first time at White Oak Music Hall, and the venue is great. Prices aren't (too) crazy. Shakey Graves, as expected, put on a fantastic performance consisting of old favorites and new material (future classics).

    Open act was on fire

by Bk&Vc on 10/30/23White Oak Music Hall - Pulse Power Stage on the Lawn - Houston

The opening out was fantastic. That the 4 stars..They had lots of energy and we’re amazing. Shakey’s performance. He’s technically a good musician and is personable when he talks to the crowd lighting was amazing sound was a bit off his mic needed to be a little bit louder and the band just didn’t give the energy. the slower genre of music seemed like it would’ve been better for a smaller venue. We left early because we weren’t really feeling the slower genre of music seemed like it would’ve been better for a smaller venue. We left early because we weren’t really feeling his vibe which is sad because that’s why we came.

    Amazing

by Desi on 10/30/23White Oak Music Hall - Pulse Power Stage on the Lawn - Houston

He is such a good performer. He’s not one of those people you here who sounds good on the radio but then live they suck and hit a bunch off key and sharp notes. He’s very talented and interacts with the crowd well.

    Not a worthwhile headliner

by Nick on 10/23/23The Union - Salt Lake City

Shakey Graves was a disappointment. He seemed to want to talk more than play music that people actually know. We left half way through because we didn’t like the show. Most of the songs you could hear a lot of people talking over the music. Just not a good, love show. Flipturn was awesome though! I will definitely go see them again but hopefully they’re the headliner!

    Sound check

by Last time at the knit on 10/17/23Knitting Factory - Spokane - Spokane

Shakey Graves was not the worst show ever but..... it wasn't the artist. We sat upstairs just to the right of the sound booth. I couldn't tell you what the new songs they played were about because the sound was not clear just muddied and distorted. As we left the band came out for the last songs and we were downstairs by this point and had an easier time listening to the actual singer and band. The venue is lacking in every way shape and form. From being scolded by the bartender for starting a tab with a bartender downstairs where the taps weren't working and then ordering from the closer bar upstairs.... why would the computer not transfer a tab.... and why is that my fault to assume that it would. Why start a tab? Make them take my card every time. To the sound this place needs some updates and upgrades. Not again. I'd rather see shows elsewhere

    Shakey Graves is pure genius

by Em on 10/16/23Knitting Factory - Boise - Boise

Shakey Graves is absolutely brilliant. Movie of the Week is a masterpiece and I believe it will be seen as the masterpiece of this time for many years to come. The whole concept of the album is just absolutely genius. If you aren’t familiar with it yet, check out his website to make your own Movie of the Week album. The coolest concept EVER! I’ve been a fan for years and am even more in love than ever before. I was at both Boise, ID shows and SLC, UT. I’m really sad he didn’t play Heartstopper as that’s been my fav song leading up to shows. I love that he played some new ones from new album as I’ve been listening to it since it came out and also older songs. It was great balance. Had so much fun dancing. He’s just SO GOOD!! 🤩😍 My only complaint is actually about the venue in Boise. The only water available at The Knitting Factory was Liquid Death water. Seriously! The only water that you could get in the whole venue. I refuse to drink something called that. It’s also just really irresponsible for a venue to serve alcohol and not have water available. It’s almost seems like a violation of a major human need to consume water. I’d love the venue to reconsider this policy. I drove a long way to get there and would do it again because I really liked the venue so I really hope they will reconsider this policy.

by Eddy on 10/16/23Knitting Factory - Boise - Boise

Flipturn was incredible! Shakey Graves is a great musician and I've been listening for years. However, however his live performance left much to be desired. With lighting out of sink, poor mic quality or no enunciation, to mocking the crowd with a ball like we're dogs. Flipturn had a great presence and the live quality was jaw-dropping!

Rude guests, meh venue, left shortly after starting

by jr on 10/16/23Knitting Factory - Boise - Boise

Pros : sounded good, bar was good with nice bartenders Cons : cramped, rude guests (I had more beer spilled on me than at any other show I’ve been to)

    Underwhelming

by AT on 10/16/23Knitting Factory - Boise - Boise

Shakey was okay, but he seemed more interested in theatrics and interacting with the crowd than performing. I'm not crazy about the new album. The opening band, Flipturn, was HORRIBLE. I can't believe anyone brought them on tour. It seemed like one of the parents bought them their equipment and sent them on the road as a vanity project. SO BAD! But, the many highschoolers in the audience loved them, so I guess there is no accounting for taste. I wish I could get my money back.

    Average at best!

by Bek on 10/15/23Knitting Factory - Spokane - Spokane

It was so slow!! Flip turn was awesome and got the crowd so pumped up and then Shakey came out and out us all to sleep! It’s a standing venue and I wanted to lay down! He didn’t play anything upbeat or his old stuff until the encore. Could have been so much better!
