Seton Hall Pirates Men's Basketball History

The first tip-off for Seton Hall’s men’s basketball team was in 1903, although with no coach and no arena, the team didn't play again for another five years. The "Pirate" became the team mascot in 1931, and in 1936, intrepid professional basketball player John "Honey" Russell took the head coach post and held it for two terms, totaling 18 years. Russell created a winning team that convinced Seton Hall to build its first sports arena, Walsh Gymnasium, which still serves as the home for Seton Hall's women's NCAA basketball team on the university’s campus. Russell's Pirates appeared in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) seven times and won the NIT title in 1953.

The Seton Hall Pirates have made the NCAA Tournament final once, in 1989 when they fell to Michigan in overtime. The team has won three conference tournament titles and four regular-season conference championships. In total, they’ve made the NCAA Tournament 14 times.

Since 1948, 28 Seton Hall Pirates have been drafted into the NBA, including NBA champions Bobby Wanzer, Bob Davies and Andrew Gaze. As a member of the Big East conference since the 1979-80 season, Seton Hall counts among its rivals their fellow "Catholic Seven" universities on the East Coast.

Enjoyed event a lot. Seats were great but a little too pricey to do anymore than once per season. Seton Hall has a great arena and a good product (Big East basketball) but they are way overpriced for the market. If they lowered pricing, they could get so many more people into the building and create a great college atmosphere.

Great game at the Prudential Center

by MCBEAR on 1/6/12Prudential Center - Newark

On Tuesday, January 3rd I had the pleasure of going to teh UCONN vs Seton Hall men's basketball game at the Prudential Center. It was a great night. The venue was so great. Not too big and not too small, just right with great views from everywhere. It was clean and easy to navigate. Parked in the yellow garage which was $20 but prepaid it on line and it was SO EASY and convenient which was nice on such a cold night. The parking garage staff was excellent. The "ushers" in the Prudential Center were rather unhelpful, bordering on rude and disinterested, but other than that a perfect night.

    Eight Dollars for a beer

    by ChrisF2415 on 12/4/11Prudential Center - Newark

Great game. Had a great time. However, it would've been a 5-star event had the beers been at least two dollars cheaper.

The game was great and our seats were fantastic. We attend at least 2 SHU games each year and these were the best seats we ever had. Of course being senior night and SHU winning the game made it a special evening.

    Pirates beat back red Storm

    by pattmaff1 on 3/5/11Prudential Center - Newark

I as an older person had a much better time than I'd expected. Loved the rally towels by the way..Seats had a really good view. section 22 lower level but were on the temp. aluminum,so we'd bouce when ever anyone came down. Lots of legroom there but we could not really ujse it lest we trip someone as they passed. Still I'd rather have it than not. I plan to go again. Also liked watching the fifth graders play and of course the cheer leading and dance squads were amazing.

The game fantastic...the seats terrible...the White Castle 4-Pack ...very disappointing...the 4 packs were not for dinner @ the Rock...but @ participating locations..therefore we had to feed 8 @ the arena....not a good way to start the evening....

    by Spin76r on 1/28/11Prudential Center - Newark

The staff at the Prudential Center were very friendly and helpful when it came time to help us find our seats, and when the attendant realized that we were Hoya fans and our seats were located in the student section she was very accommodating and helped us find other seats with just as good of a view if not better.

    Exemplary service

by jayemmpea on 1/25/11Prudential Center - Newark

As i phoned to the Pru Center Director of Client Services (I think her title was) on Monday after the event, there were a few employees who went above and beyond to help my over 80 year old dad and I. From expediting our journey to the seats (as mobility is less than ideal) to ensuring he was able to see all the activity and game action, these employees are an asset to the Center. We look forward to visiting the center a couple more times this winter and are thankful for their courtesy and professionalism. Unfortunately the wrong team won, but that is why they play the games. Thanks for the opportunity to comment.

Good seats but the game was so-so

    by CuseFan4Ever on 1/10/11Prudential Center - Newark

I went to see Syracuse, but unfortunately they did not play their best game. They won, but they allowed Seton Hall to stay in it until the end. The Cuse fans follow their team all across the east coast and further, so it was a largely partisan SU crowd. Unfortunately, there were not enough ticket buyers to fill the entire arena, as the curtain was closed on the top level. Other than that, it was a good experience. The seats were really nice and the atmosphere was good.

It was a very entertaining afternoon. The seats were good and priced reasonably. Access to and from the arena was relatively easy. It was our fist time at the Prudential Center, and the staff and employees were very friendly and helpful. It was a very enjoyable time and we certainly plan on returning.
