Seton Hall Pirates Men's Basketball History

The first tip-off for Seton Hall’s men’s basketball team was in 1903, although with no coach and no arena, the team didn't play again for another five years. The "Pirate" became the team mascot in 1931, and in 1936, intrepid professional basketball player John "Honey" Russell took the head coach post and held it for two terms, totaling 18 years. Russell created a winning team that convinced Seton Hall to build its first sports arena, Walsh Gymnasium, which still serves as the home for Seton Hall's women's NCAA basketball team on the university’s campus. Russell's Pirates appeared in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) seven times and won the NIT title in 1953.

The Seton Hall Pirates have made the NCAA Tournament final once, in 1989 when they fell to Michigan in overtime. The team has won three conference tournament titles and four regular-season conference championships. In total, they’ve made the NCAA Tournament 14 times.

Since 1948, 28 Seton Hall Pirates have been drafted into the NBA, including NBA champions Bobby Wanzer, Bob Davies and Andrew Gaze. As a member of the Big East conference since the 1979-80 season, Seton Hall counts among its rivals their fellow "Catholic Seven" universities on the East Coast.

Great seats however it was the last row of the pull-out bleachers so everytime someone walked by or moved you would rock. Other than that it was a great game.

    Pirates 10, Prudential 10

SU did not take advantage of their skills. Too many turnovers, and failure to capitalize on forced TO's. But great effort by Wesley Johnson (he CAN elevate) and Kris Joseph. LOTS of SU faithful in the Prudential Center - may have outnumbered Seton Hall fans. Great time !

    Parking was a nighmare

by PopPopF on 12/31/09Prudential Center - Newark

Event and seats were great however parking was a nightmare. We parked directly across from arena and they tried to scam us out of another $20 telling us that our parking ticket was no good even though we purchased it as we entered the lot. They would not permit us to leave the lot demanding we pay the extra $20. Traffic out of the lot was terrible. Will take the train next time to avoid parking.

Pirates palyed great... except when it counted.

by eyeimager on 12/30/09Prudential Center - Newark

The Rock is an excellent venue for NCAA basketball games. The home team played very well until the game was on the line. The Pirates of Seton Hall played a top 10 nationally ranked team on an off night. They could have pulled off a huge upset. They played very hard to kept the game interesting until the last minute of play.

Great Game but Pirates come up short in the end

by jjchristi on 12/30/09Prudential Center - Newark

Great game tied 43-43 at half but the Pirates got cold in the second half and the Orange put it to them. Final score 80-73. Was a good Big East matchup and both teams are expected to do well this season although Seton Hall has had their problems with other top 10 teams. Comment: There were more Syracuse fans at the Prudential Center than Seton Hall. This is a disgrace that the Seton Hall Alumn don't come out and support their team. The school is a few minute ride from Newark.

Great Place to see a B.B. game!

by Buckmeister on 12/30/09Prudential Center - Newark

The last time I saw the Orangemen play it was the at the humongeous Carrier Dome in Syracuse back in the 80's. The Dome is NOT a good place to watch a basketball game if you're in the nether regions of the upper deck of the stadium that seats 50,000 for football. However, the seating at the Prudential Center was superb. We sat in the corner 3 rows from the top of the lower tier and had a great view of the court.

    Yeah Syracuse!

by Alohajax on 12/30/09Prudential Center - Newark

The game was fantastic, a real nailbiter. The stadium was lovely besides for the biased announcers and camera crew in the stadium (which is expected since it was an away game for Syracuse). The only thing that would make it better is if the man behind me didnt yell at me for standing/ cheering... He was probably upset that Seton Hall was losing.

The game was great. Unfortunately the only way we could see it was on the elevated screens. Our seats in row eleven were on the aisle and besides all the people walking in front of us, the first two rows on the other side of the aisle were at equal level to ours. The only way you could see the court is by looking around the people in front or standing. I was with my my grandchildren and the experience did not leave a favorable memory.

The Rock hosts a great bassketball game

    by OwlFan13 on 12/20/09Prudential Center - Newark

This was only my second Seton Hall game at The Rock. It is a great venue and the people are very friendly. the tickets were reasonable and the turnout was good despite the bad weather. As a Temple fan, I was routing against the home team but, the atmosphere was good and it was a great game.
