Seton Hall Pirates Men's Basketball History

The first tip-off for Seton Hall’s men’s basketball team was in 1903, although with no coach and no arena, the team didn't play again for another five years. The "Pirate" became the team mascot in 1931, and in 1936, intrepid professional basketball player John "Honey" Russell took the head coach post and held it for two terms, totaling 18 years. Russell created a winning team that convinced Seton Hall to build its first sports arena, Walsh Gymnasium, which still serves as the home for Seton Hall's women's NCAA basketball team on the university’s campus. Russell's Pirates appeared in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) seven times and won the NIT title in 1953.

The Seton Hall Pirates have made the NCAA Tournament final once, in 1989 when they fell to Michigan in overtime. The team has won three conference tournament titles and four regular-season conference championships. In total, they’ve made the NCAA Tournament 14 times.

Since 1948, 28 Seton Hall Pirates have been drafted into the NBA, including NBA champions Bobby Wanzer, Bob Davies and Andrew Gaze. As a member of the Big East conference since the 1979-80 season, Seton Hall counts among its rivals their fellow "Catholic Seven" universities on the East Coast.

The Prudential Center is beautiful and we got prepaid parking in yello 10 and walked directly from the garage to the PC via the sky bridge. Super convenient. Our team won which made it even better... Go 'Cuse!!!

    Nice arena, but....

by Sydrick on 2/18/13Prudential Center - Newark

Nice arena. It would be better if all of the concession stands, etc...were open. Why are they in the arena if they are going to be closed during a game?

    Seton Hall Basketball

by Dukee on 2/13/13Prudential Center - Newark

Seton Hall played uninspired basketball as evidenced by their 2nd half play. How many free throws are they going to miss and how many passes are they going to get stolen?I know they have a lot of injuries but I have 2nd thoughts about spending money to go see them again

    Game Was Over Early

by SKisala on 1/17/13Prudential Center - Newark

One myth about basketball is that the games are always decided at the end. Sometimes, the game is won/lost in the opening minutes. Such was the case with the 1/13/13 Seton Hall-Providence game. providence had a 22-5 lead halfway through the first half;though Seton Hall cut the deficet to nine points (28-19) in the first half and eight points (52-44) in the second half, the game was never really in doubt. Still, the ticket prices were reasonable ($28 for a lower level seat) and the Seton Hall band, cheerleaders and dance squad kept the crowd entertained during the TV timeouts.

    Sinking Ship

by VinBic on 1/15/13Prudential Center - Newark

The Pirate ship is in troubled waters. The crew is ill-prepared to fight and win.

    Kids loved the game

    by twanna23 on 12/31/12Prudential Center - Newark

Game was worth more than the price of the tickets. The teenagers we took were very excited and had a great time.

couldn't ask for more excitemewnt and nail biting

    by shu1969 on 12/30/12Prudential Center - Newark

game was pretty tame for first half; second half each time played more intense d and moved a lot quicker; when it got down to 15 seconds the Hall was ahead by 1 point and I thought they would lose; but they played really smary ball by killing Stony's momentum and caused several time outs and out of bounds.

    Good Local Competition

by JosieO on 11/27/12Prudential Center - Newark

The game was back and forth in the first half. Seton Hall took control in the second half. Great game for a Seton Hall fan. Tthe Rock is a great venue and it's always a pleasure to attend an event there. Looking forward to attending a few more games this season.

    Great Sports Event!!

by stnyjets on 11/27/12Prudential Center - Newark

We took our son to the game with 5 of his friends for his birthday. He loves basketball, and we could not afford an NBA game, so we thought we would try College. The event was very family friendly, no drunk obscene fans!! The mascot came by and took pictures. Overall, it was a great experience, and we will go again!!

Great atmosphere and game. We were in the back row but that is still actually close, and gives easy access to concessions, rest rooms, and the balcony area right behind you. Go RU! We own Jersey!

    Fantastic Experience

by JosieO on 2/27/12Prudential Center - Newark

The Rock was rockin!! Great Senior Day presentation. Game ball arrived via ROTC cadets dropping from the ceiling. The game was a sellout and the fans were rousing the entire game. The game was hard fought throughout. Unfortunately, Seton Hall lost. Can't wait until next year for more great games at the Rock.

I ordered the family four pack, but never received the gift card or basketball that was supposed to come along with it. Where was I supposed to get that from?

    Great Pirate Victory

by branchburgpirate on 2/18/12Prudential Center - Newark

The tickets were Christmas presents for my boys and they had a wonderful time. What was more special is that my son loves Pittsburgh, so I have bragging rights for this year!

    Such a fun evening!

by Ladybughugs on 2/16/12Prudential Center - Newark

This was much better than fighting the crowds for a table on Valentine's Day. My son (8th grade) loved watching the game, my daughter (1st grade) loved watching the cheerleaders and dance team. We would definitely do this again.

    Awful

    by jimmypirate1 on 2/16/12Prudential Center - Newark

Low turn out and a blow out. Who plans games on Valentines Day?? Thank goodness the bar was open and the Knick game was available on one of the TVs in the Men's Room. The more I drank to drive away the pain of the 30 point near high school level competition the more times I could get an update on Jeremy Lin. Far more enteraining than the woodshed whoopass the Pirates put on the Storm.
