Seton Hall Pirates Men's Basketball History

The first tip-off for Seton Hall’s men’s basketball team was in 1903, although with no coach and no arena, the team didn't play again for another five years. The "Pirate" became the team mascot in 1931, and in 1936, intrepid professional basketball player John "Honey" Russell took the head coach post and held it for two terms, totaling 18 years. Russell created a winning team that convinced Seton Hall to build its first sports arena, Walsh Gymnasium, which still serves as the home for Seton Hall's women's NCAA basketball team on the university’s campus. Russell's Pirates appeared in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) seven times and won the NIT title in 1953.

The Seton Hall Pirates have made the NCAA Tournament final once, in 1989 when they fell to Michigan in overtime. The team has won three conference tournament titles and four regular-season conference championships. In total, they’ve made the NCAA Tournament 14 times.

Since 1948, 28 Seton Hall Pirates have been drafted into the NBA, including NBA champions Bobby Wanzer, Bob Davies and Andrew Gaze. As a member of the Big East conference since the 1979-80 season, Seton Hall counts among its rivals their fellow "Catholic Seven" universities on the East Coast.

Our first trip to the Rock

by BillyBedlam on 1/10/11Prudential Center - Newark

The building was beautiful and even though we were Syracuse fans, the staff was extremely helpful and friendly. My son got his face painted and they had a lot of interactive things for him to do. The only problem was that we were seated behind the basket with a walkway in front of us. The seats were on a riser and we felt every step people took up and down the stairs. Also, being behind a walkway made it extremely difficult for my son to see.

Richmond was dominant in improving to 10-3 and we thoroughly enjoyed watching the Spiders rock The Rock.

    Poor Location

    by njdevils2003champs on 11/19/10Prudential Center - Newark

It should be stated on the tickets that Section 2F (Floor) is considered a obstructed view seat because the Seton Hall Band stands throughout the entire game which they have a right to do but at least have all the students sit in the same section. The seats were a little cramped and having the guy next to me being so close that he can breathe on me. Section 2 should be strictly for the students. I hate to say it but I do feel somewhat robbed that I was able to see half the court. I would recommend seeing the Pirates but sit in a different location.

I had a great seat and the game was fantastic. Too bad Pirates lost, but you couldn't have asked for better. Game went into overtime.

    SHU vs. MU

by Anonymous on 3/1/10Prudential Center - Newark

Excellent. Exciting. College hoops is easily more enjoyable and entertaining than the NBA and the Big East is the premeir conference now, so all the games are competitive.

    Great Game...Great Venue

by MarquetteMom on 3/1/10Prudential Center - Newark

Didn't know where to sit: I'm a Hall Alumna and my son is a Marquette Alum. Didn't matter, though, the game was awesome!!! Our first time to the PruCenter. Seats were great. Directions were on the mark, and the pre-paid parking quite convenient. Staff friendly and helpful. Marquette in yet another hair-raising "they might lose in the last few minutes" game, but the Hall almost, almost made it. Golden Eagles (Warriors) rule!!!

I laughed, I cried, it became part of me. Especially like the $8 service charge per ticket

    Seton Hall

by Hanksta on 3/1/10Prudential Center - Newark

The game was fantastic, as was the venue. VERY helpful attendees working as well, seem much happier than anyone working at other local sports venues.

    Seton Hall @ Prudential Center

    by ChrisCon40 on 3/1/10Prudential Center - Newark

Great game, Marquette won by one point in overtime. It was my first time at the Prudential Center. The upper level was curtained off, so seating was limited to the lower bowl. My friends and I sat in the corner in the middle of the row. Additionally we took the PATH train from WTC out to Newark. The trip was relatively easy, and it was only a short walk from Newark Penn Station to the arena.

    Seton Hall Basketball

Great game; enjoyed the band; seats wide and comfortable; too expensive ($72/ticket) for a college basketball game; parking too expensive ($20).

Seton Hall vs Marquette was great

    by fifa15 on 3/1/10Prudential Center - Newark

My first time to the PRu Center and I must say what an improvement over Continental Arena. Our seats were great and the action was intense. The game was sweet and sorrow with Seton Hall losing on the last shot of overtime. The overall experience for my son and I was great. Definetly looking forward to going to a few games next year. I will being telling my friends that they should go to a game also.

Always a great place to go

by JosieO on 2/15/10Prudential Center - Newark

Another great time at the Rock (Prudential Center). The game was exciting with Seton Hall managing to stay on top the entire game for a win. The staff at the Rock is pleasant and helpful. I found out it is better to have to tickets sent rather than use Will Call as it makes using the parking lots and meeting others easier. The parking garage next to the Center is very convenient but you need to have your tickets with you in order to go directly from the garage to the arena. You need to go the box office to pick up or purchase tickets so you want to park close to the box office entrance. On my previous trips I had taken the train (which is also a great way to get to the game). I will continue to attened Seton Hall games and may considering a Devil's game

    ND vs Seton Hall 2/11/10

    by NDMets86 on 2/14/10Prudential Center - Newark

The event at the Prudential Center was a very satisfying experience. I am a Notre Dame grad and they lost but I loved the seats, loved the club area, and just had a great experience.

    Good Time

    by Bill1952 on 2/12/10Prudential Center - Newark

Hey the Hall is not a UConn or Villanova, but perhaps could be close next year with a big man, so to see quality top 20 basketball right in your back yard, (within 30 min drive), not a bad deal!!!!

    Pirates basketball

by Anonymous on 1/26/10Prudential Center - Newark

The game was great! The parking was easy. The Arena is state of the art. Could've used a few more fans in the arena, but it was the Jets Playoff day so I understand. Great value and high quality basketball.

Seton Hall was an undisciplined team that looked more fit for a playground than the Big East. Herb Pope is a great talent and it is a shame that it has taken him this long to get it together. Pitt played like they had never touched a basketball before and was not able to pull off the win. The Seton Hall student support was terrible and embarrassing. I don't think they made any noise until a few minutes were left in the game.
