Seton Hall Pirates Men's Basketball History

The first tip-off for Seton Hall’s men’s basketball team was in 1903, although with no coach and no arena, the team didn't play again for another five years. The "Pirate" became the team mascot in 1931, and in 1936, intrepid professional basketball player John "Honey" Russell took the head coach post and held it for two terms, totaling 18 years. Russell created a winning team that convinced Seton Hall to build its first sports arena, Walsh Gymnasium, which still serves as the home for Seton Hall's women's NCAA basketball team on the university’s campus. Russell's Pirates appeared in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) seven times and won their first NIT title in 1953.

The Seton Hall Pirates have made the NCAA Tournament final once, in 1989 when they fell to Michigan in overtime. The team has won three conference tournament titles and four regular-season conference championships. In total, they’ve made the NCAA Tournament 14 times. Across Seton Hall’s 19 total NIT appearances, the Pirates have won twice, in 1953 and 2024.

Since 1948, 31 Seton Hall Pirates have been drafted into the NBA, including NBA champions Bobby Wanzer, Bob Davies and Andrew Gaze. As a member of the Big East conference since the 1979-80 season, Seton Hall counts among its rivals their fellow "Catholic Seven" universities on the East Coast.

  • Amateurish at best

    by Jbm1127 on 1/6/15Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 1 out of 5

Visiting fans should stay away from this amateur operation! Half of the concessions are closed. Those that were open closed right after halftime. Don't get thirsty or hungry. Second and more absurd was the unprofessional PA announcer. Besides sounding like he was up all night yelling so hat he had no voice left, he basically narrated the game. Example: visiting team calls timeout, he says "It looks like Team X needs to talk it over." You had to be there to get the full feel for this guy. He sounded like an NBA wannabe announcer. However, this is the NCAA and we don't need to ruin the collegiate environment. All of this on top of being in Newark. Don't go!

  • St John´s!

by Espen on 1/3/15Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 4 out of 5

We went to see St Johns play Seton Hall in the Prudential center in Newark. The arena was nice. Definitely home area for the Pirates. A few St Johns fans had made it over from New York, but we were outnumbered by the many Pirates fans. The Pirates won. Too bad. However, the overall experience was good. Tickets were a bit too expensive.

Loved the game - very exciting. Venue fantastic EXCEPT for the screaming PA announcer(play caller) No need and really took away from the quality game being played. Please remind him the game is about other people.

  • Seton Hall vs GWU

    by 4Schneid on 12/2/14Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 5 out of 5

Ticketmaster made this a breeze. Tix were affordable, 5 rows off the court, and the prepaid parking made it easy for a quick in/out. Already signed up for the Creighton game on February!!

  • Seton Hall Basketball game

by Anonymous on 2/23/14Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 2 out of 5

I have been to many college basketball games. I have never seen so many security guards near the student section. The Seton Hall students were largely represented by fraternities that were very boisterous and blatantly obnoxious. I will never attend another event like this. Even the Seton Hall fans {adults} near us were apologizing for the students!

  • Seton Hall vs. Villanova

    by Ben39 on 1/16/14Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 5 out of 5

Although it wasn't a great, competitive game, the event was still a ton of fun. Can't beat a college basketball atmosphere, and the venue is both easy to navigate and very family-friendly.

College basketball is family friendly and economical.

  • Wonderful Experience

    by 2dave on 1/11/14Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 5 out of 5

The event was the first draw, the price was the second. We bought the PSEG priced tickets at $33.. No only did we get great seats, we each got vouchers for free hot dogs and soda. If that wasn't enough, there were free Seton Hall t-shirts at our seats when we arrived. It was a tremendous experience and the kids loved it!!! Thank you PSEG...Thank you Seton Hall.

Seton Hall needs a scorer. McDermott is going to be an NBA star

  • McDermott - awesome player for Creighton

by Anonymous on 1/7/14Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 4 out of 5

Seats were good- as a SHU alum, it was disappointing in the result but fun to see a team of Creighton's caliber play in the Big East. They are a definite NCAA team to be reckoned with in the tournament. Pirates need to get healthy and will be a competitive team down the stretch.

  • Seton Hall vs. Creighton

    by Ben39 on 1/7/14Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 5 out of 5

Had a great time. Even though Seton Hall lost, it was still an enjoyable experience to watch a game with the family. Terrific venue. Easy to navigate and close to public transportation. Definitely will be going back.

  • College athletics at its best

  • SU v SetonHalll

    by SUFAN13 on 2/18/13Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 4 out of 5

Seats were great and game ws even better with SU winning. The Food Service was a Plus with an area for ticket holders in Sec 7 or so who ONLY had access. made getting food easy!! Pnly drawback to Prudential Center is how you enter the bldg..few doors open and long lines outside in the cold....I know they need to scan for items..but this is my second time there..and still no change in procedure. Overall a great facility. Tip: Park outside the structure...use a local lot a few blocks away. You will get out a lot faster after the game.
