About

Sarah McLachlan is one of most distinctive female vocalists after breaking out in the ’90s behind singles such as “Building a Mystery” and “I Will Remember You.” With 1994’s Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, McLachlan became a star. The album peaked at number 50 on the Billboard 200 chart and number five on the Canada Top Albums/CDs chart. As of 2023, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy has been certified platinum three times in the United States. McLachlan released her debut album Touch in 1988. Her 1997 effort Surfacing debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and hosted her three highest-charting Hot 100 singles: “Building a Mystery,” at No. 13, “Adia” at No. 3 and “Angel” at No. 4. The album went on to win two Grammy Awards. Surfacing coincided with the first Lilith Fair, the wildly successful all-female touring festival co-founded and hosted by McLachlan that took place from 1997 through 1999. In 2003, Afterglow marked McLachlan’s third consecutive Top 10 album, and she maintained that streak with studio albums released through 2014’s Shine On. McLachlan has won 12 JUNO Awards and in 2017 was inducted into The Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

A lot less bass in the monitors please!

by majorletdown on 7/3/10Sleep Country Amphitheater (Amph at Clark County) - Ridgefield

Though the weather wasn't on our side we were ready to kick back by the main stage and under cover and listen to some great music. As in past Lilith Fairs I've been too I expected top notch acts and a nice variety of female performers. First up was Colbie Caillat , I couldn't tell you how she sounded because the mix was horrible. The bass and drums so loud it was feeding back , I kept thinking the sound guys would bring it down but no, they appeared to not do anything. We thought it was were we were sitting, (far right row M) but for the top bucks we paid for those seats we shouldn't have to be sitting in the middle to hear a good show. I'm not sure how the sound was for the rest of the crowd, but for us we were very let down. The next act, Erykah Badu I'd never heard of before. She arrived 20 minutes late and left 5 minutes early. As with Caillat the sound mix was unbearable so we didn't get a feel for her music, but I could probably give you the bass line. Sheryl Crow was next...... I love Sheryl and she played a lot of her older favorites, which helped in figuring out what she was playing. She did an awesome Led Zep cover and rocked the house. Sugarland was good for the country fans, we are not. But again the sound sucked. It wasn't until Sarah was setting up that we saw the sound guys come in what looked like a new mixing board. Sarah sounded great! She had a nice mix of old and new and we were able to hear all the instruments, which smashed my earlier idea that we were just in a bad acoustic spot to hear well. I can tell you that in the past Lilith's I've been too...... all in Vancouver B.C. the energy and feeling to the crowd was electric. I don't know if it was the weather or the venue but it all seemed very disjointed at this Amphitheater. The two side stages seemed far to separated, and hard to navigate. Most people were lost trying to find the stages. There were no maps or people to help. By the time you got to the other stage the set was almost over. We got to see Grace Potter and it was awesome, she can rock it! Overall we were very let down. Everything was very expensive, I don't mind spending 8 bucks for a beer if I'm going to be entertained by top notch acts and sound, but this sucked. I left feeling it's all about the money now Sarah.

    Lilith program confusion

by PDXDave on 7/3/10Sleep Country Amphitheater (Amph at Clark County) - Ridgefield

While there were great and memorable moments at the Fair, many of the attendees found great confusion once we arrived. Tickets indicated doors open at 2:30 which was OK but the website had NO program information and upon arriving we discovered that on the main stage (where our seats were), there was no music act scheduled for over 3 hours. On top of that, programs provided upon entrance were confusing as it was unclear which stage (of remaining 2) was which, no maps provided. Turns out, the stages were at opposite sides of the venue park so most people stayed at one hoping for the best rather than shuttle back and forth in the minimal time allowed between acts. Overall, we had a good time but spent a great deal of time just hanging around waiting for music that many fair goers assumed would start earlier. Spending 10 hours at the site was difficult for many. A clear program would have allowed people to arrive closer to the acts they wished to see.

Crow, McLaughlin, Sugarland and Collita were fabulous. Weather was horrible but venue at least provided cover from the rain.

    Lilith Live

by taterann on 7/3/10Sleep Country Amphitheater (Amph at Clark County) - Ridgefield

The intensity built as the sun set. Caillat kicked things off with a great set, followed by the enigmatic Erykah Badu in all her glorious refinement, incredible band and amazing voice - too short a set however. Sheryl Crow rocked the house....I mean really rocked the house with sequined skirt, flowing mane and guitar slung over her shoulder. The crowd was on its feet and never sat down. Wow! Sugarland hit it out of the ball park. Great music, theater at its best. And the energy. Everybody dancing on stage and in the crowd. Interestingly, the last act, Sarah McLachlan was fantastic, but seemed out of place. Her style and music brought everything back to earth, quieter, more contemplative. But everyone was back on stage for a finale that kicked it up. Great feeling walking back to the car and getting up this morning. Well worth the long lines to get in while standing in the rain. When is the Clark County Amphitheater going to get it right? Amazing venue, not well organized.

    Lilith is back!

by Anonymous on 7/3/10Sleep Country Amphitheater (Amph at Clark County) - Ridgefield

For the most part, the performers at Lilith Fair lived up to expectations, and then some. Though not a country music fan, I was surprised by the energy and likability of Sugarland. They did a lot to energize the audience. There didn't seem to be a lot of information available before the show about how the acts were going to be set up. At the Amphitheater, the main stage was of course inside, and there were two subsidiary stages set up outside: the Village Stage on one side, and the ABC stage on the other. These were not well-publicized and it wasn't until we saw someone playing music on one (Annie Bethancourt, all by her lonesome with that big hungry wet crowd, amazing performance) that we got an inkling that the show had started. Then we saw, posted on the stage, a schedule of acts, and had to look around to find the ABC stage. It was quite a hike around the amphitheater, but they wouldn't (initially) let us pass THROUGH. (They finally did). There was also only, believe it or not, ONE espresso stand. The wait in line was about 40 minutes. By the time we got through, I had missed an act I wanted to see (Grace Potter and the Nocturnals). After all the trekking around I was actually too tired to see A Fine Frenzy, one of the other acts I really wanted to see. My apologies to both performers; when they come next year I WILL make the time. A 14-year-old (her first concert) that I was with asked why they didn't pipe the music and video of the two outside stages onto the screens in the amphitheater itself. Listen up, Sleep Country folk! Finally, Erykah Badu seemed like she'd just as soon not have been there. It may not have been her fault, but she started quite late, gave an all-but-perfunctory performance, and didn't return for the show-ending gathering.

    Lilith Fair was Fabulous

by lagollan on 7/3/10Sleep Country Amphitheater (Amph at Clark County) - Ridgefield

Fine Frenzy was so good- Sugarland was fullof energy & VERY ENTERTAINING! Sheryl Crow in our opinion REALLY OUT DID EVEN HERSELF- BROUGHT DOWN THE HOUSE- SHE WAS REALLY ROCKIN!!! Sara was unreal! Her voice is amazing - She did alot of old, new- she radiated and mellowed the crowd- got them ready for major traffiic/parking issues. Erika Badu - I like but was a lil disappointed she didn't play more. I loved Sara inviting everyone on stage that performed for a last song- It was worth the price of the ticket- to see them all dressed down after performing and still willing to get on stage and entertain the crowd you could tell they were enjoying it as much as we did. - unfortunately Erika must have had alnother commitment because she wasn't their for the grand performace.

    Lilith was Outstanding

by Anonymous on 7/3/10Sleep Country Amphitheater (Amph at Clark County) - Ridgefield

Loved the main performers, but was dismayed by two things, and not sure if it was the fault of Lilith or the venue management. 1, Why didn't you inform people that the performance by the artists listed would not start until 6 pm. We were a trio of older women who waited outside the gates for nearly two hours for the line to diminish enough that we could stand in line. We thought we were missing the actual main performance because we could hear singing. Also, it did a disservice to the outside stages that we didn't know they would be performing. 2. The event was held in Vancouver.....NOT Portland. Understandable if the event was listed, and the artists greeted Vancouver AND Portland. But, come on.....Vancouver was never mentioned - by the artists or in the program - and damn it, the event was held in Vancouver, not Portland! All of that said, the performances were great and we really loved all of them.

    Glad Lilith is back.

by SmokinHotMama on 7/3/10Sleep Country Amphitheater (Amph at Clark County) - Ridgefield

Though not quite as amazing as 10 years ago, I'm glad Lilith is back. Sarah, Sheryl Crow, & Sugarland were awesome, and the artists on the other stages were impressive. Overall, it's wonderful to see a celebration of some great female artists.

    Lilith Fair 2010

by Bwaggles on 7/3/10Sleep Country Amphitheater (Amph at Clark County) - Ridgefield

I took my wife to Lilith Fair, so wasn't really there for the show myself, but nonetheless everyone on the main stage was fantastic. Especially Sheryl and Sara. Sheryl is a fantastic performer, you can tell she loves her band and it was just great entertainment and Sara is a real pro man. Very very professional. Colby Colait was great too. Wonderful voice and very pro. It was fun even though I was not a big fan of any of the acts. Oh Yeah, and Sugarland, even though I don't like country music in general, I can appreciate these guys as entertainers. Really great, lotsa energy and no reservations in their performance. So there ya go.

Main stage lineup was great! The only disappointment (a big one) was the Erykah was virtually a 'no show'. She came on late and sang only about 4 songs and then left; not to return with everyone else at the finale. And what's with the yellow sweatpants rolled over at the waist??? Sheryl was amazing! What energy and enthusiasm! And I loved the homage she paid to her band.

    Lilith!

by ezb1 on 7/3/10Sleep Country Amphitheater (Amph at Clark County) - Ridgefield

This was my first concert at the Sleep Country Amphitheater. I hope that not all concerts there have an entrance line that takes an hour to get inside. By the time we got inside, the first singer was already performing and we missed most of it. Also, they did not hand me a schedule so I had no idea what time everyone was performing and where the stages were and where their albums were for sale, until I found someone to ask. The Lilith Fair website did not have the lineup schedule posted either, but it was on the Lilith Fair phone app (once I downloaded it when I was already at the concert wondering where I needed to go at what time). That being said, overall I had a good time and would recommend it to my friends. I enjoyed Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Lucy Schwartz, and a Fine Frenzy. Sheryl Crow and Sarah McLachlan were phenomenal! Their performances were the best of the evening.

    Music Great Event Center Horrible

by Astou on 7/3/10Sleep Country Amphitheater (Amph at Clark County) - Ridgefield

Lilith Fair was sited as being a performance of 8-10 artists from 2:30 - 10:30 pm 8 hours of music. I was there from 3:30 on - 7 hours and heard about 3 hours worth of music from 5 people. I liked the music a lot. Colbie was light and fun, Sheryl Crow rocked out, Sugarland had wonderful energy and pizzaz and Sarah was truly magnificent - but the Event Center frankly stunk - over priced food, long lines, upgrades for lawn to covered seats were going to cost my family of 4 $220 at the minimum ($55 a seat) - ridiculous. It rained on us for a couple of hours. The time between sets was20-50 minutes and included an ABC TV show. I did not pay money to sit in front of a TV show - really angering. Tops had to be left off drink bottles in a place where there was no public water, you couldn't bring in water and water cost $4 for a 16 oz bottle - that you then had to figure out how to keep from not spilling on a slanted wet crowded lawn -extremely angering. Almost no vegetarian options where you weren't even allowed to bring in carrot sticks - inhumane and discriminatory. I will not return to Sleep Country Amphitheater again, unless these policies change.

Sheryl Crow was so wonderful, she truly rocked steady. Sarah was so delightful. One thing though some the songs came through muffled, hard to dicern the words. We arrived later than planned.

    Portland Lilith Fair event

by Lilithfan on 7/3/10Sleep Country Amphitheater (Amph at Clark County) - Ridgefield

If you've never gone buy a ticket now. The event was so fun. Each entertainer gave their all. It was fun to see some new up and coming performers close up and the headliners were fantastic. Sheryl Crow and Sugarland rocked the house - they were so full of energy. Loved the information booths. Wonderful atmosphere. Great for multi generations. Lots of men came to the PDX event.

We had fun, but it kinda sucked

by RENT32 on 7/3/10Sleep Country Amphitheater (Amph at Clark County) - Ridgefield

It was pouring rain. That was awful. It said the show started at 2:30, but it didn't start until 5:50. That was a lot of sitting around and waiting, especially in the rain. Colbie Callait was okay. Erykah Bady only performed 4 songs, which SUCKED. Too short of a set. Not sure how she can get away with that, when everyone else performed for an hour. Sheryl Crow didn't look very excited to be there, and she played WAY TOOOOOOO long. Sugurland was AMAZING. That was the only good part about the entire show. We left before Sarah Mclachlan.

  • Rating: 5 out of 5

by Emerald525 on 7/3/10Sleep Country Amphitheater (Amph at Clark County) - Ridgefield

Great show! The tickets were expensive but worth it when you think of all the people singing! They were real sticklers for having the show run on time which was nice but also sucked because Erykah Badu was 20 minutes late so she only sang like 4 songs. Sheryl Crow was my favorite act. I love Sarah too! I'm not a country fan but Sugarland did put a lot of effort and energy in the show.

The show itself was great, Sugarland totally rocked the stage!!!! The acoustics on the other hand were not so great, at least when the stars were talking, all you really heard was "Blah, blah, blah, blah", the only exception was when Sarah was onstage.

A little rain can't dampen Vancouver!!!

by Mandodoc on 7/3/10Sleep Country Amphitheater (Amph at Clark County) - Ridgefield

The rain came but we were prepared. The show came and it was totally awesome.Colbie started the fun with a great set. Erykah got us into a totally great grove. Sheryl was absolutely wonderful. Sugarland had so much energy and were rocking the house. Sarah brought us home with an intimate and wonderful set. The rain actually held off for the rest of the night too. The final peice of a great night was the YES parking, we were home in no time. It was so much fun. Thank you Sleep Country it was great.
