About

Santana in Concert

Few musicians in the history of American popular music inspire the same reverence as Carlos Santana. For more than four decades, he has been one of the music world's most distinctive and exciting guitarists, maintaining his reputation as an artist who continues to revolutionize the form.

Long before listeners knew terms like "fusion" and "world music," Santana was already a master who blended genres and traditions into a sound that was all his own. It's no wonder the young guitarist generated so much excitement as a foremost member of the Bay Area's fertile music community of the late 1960s.

With the release of his debut album Santana and an incendiary set at Woodstock in 1969, Santana established himself as one of the key artists of the era, gaining worldwide fame for his band's combination of Latin, jazz, blues, rock, and R&B. The new star proved his staying power when Santana remained on the Billboard charts and successors Abraxas and Santana III both reached No. 1.

In 1998, Santana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In addition to racking up career sales of more than 100 million records, he earned another spot in history books when Supernatural — the multiplatinum 1999 album that included such hits as "Smooth" and "Maria Maria" — won nine Grammy Awards, tying the record for most wins by a single project.

In 2014, he published his best-selling memoir, The Universal Tone: Bringing My Story to Light. Among his recent musical endeavors has been Santana IV, a thrilling album that saw him reunite with musicians from his band's early-‘70s lineup; and Power of Peace, a deeply soulful collaboration with The Isley Brothers.

Santana returned with more new music in 2019. In Search of Mona Lisa is an EP featuring three instrumentals inspired by the awe he felt the first time he saw Leonardo da Vinci's painting during a visit to the Louvre. Santana continues to inspire the same reaction at shows by the current incarnation of the band that bears his name. His team of first-tier players includes drummer Cindy Blackman Santana (Lenny Kravitz, Pharoah Sanders), bassist Benny Rietveld (Miles Davis, Sheila E.), keyboardist David K. Mathews (Tower of Power, Etta James), and percussionist Karl Perazzo (Mariah Carey, Tito Puente).

Santana on Tour

Grammy Award-winning, legendary artists Carlos Santana and Earth, Wind & Fire embark on a North American tour. A continuation of 2019's Supernatural Now tour for Santana, the Miraculous Supernatural 2020 Tour marks the first time these two powerhouses share the stage in the U.S. The Live Nation-produced outing kicks off June 19th in San Diego and makes stops in Los Angeles, Dallas, New York, Chicago, Toronto, and more before wrapping August 29th in Tampa.

Santana, and his band (which also features Santana's wife, Cindy Blackman Santana) highlight songs from both his Supernatural and Woodstock eras, as well as newer tracks from his 2019 full-length album Africa Speaks and some incredible surprises. Earth, Wind & Fire is one of music's most celebrated musical forces in history with an iconic music catalog that has been the soundtrack of millions of lives around the world.

In 2019, Santana celebrated the 20th anniversary of his revolutionary, multiple Grammy Award-wining album Supernatural, along with the 50th anniversary of his Woodstock performance. Santana's 1999 album Supernatural featured the back-to-back No. 1 singles "Smooth" and "Maria Maria" and sold over 30 million copies worldwide, topping the charts in over a dozen countries and sweeping the 2000 Grammy Awards.

  • Great Entertainment!

by nsadr09 on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Santana is, by far, one of the greatest entertainers I have ever seen perform! His band was amazing and he played all of his greatest work! It was literally a 2-hour long jam session!

  • Not what I hoped for

by sillymi on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 1 out of 5

Didn't know this was going to be a political rally. Just play the music! Love Steve Winwood, but could hardly understand a word - the sound was bad. We left early.

  • by MGsticks on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 3 out of 5

Steve Woodwin was Excelent !!! GREAT Band. GREAT change ups over all EXCELLENT. SANTANA on the other hand eas good but not excellent. soud was way to loud everthing thing was push to the limit decimal wise. For me it took the enjoyment out of the show. also it just was not the Santana I rember from old.

  • Santana/Winwood

by hoddydo on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 3 out of 5

Winwood was good but vocals were hard to understand sometimes.but over all good...Santana Music was way to loud and his new music the renditions were way to long, as we were wanting to hear some of the older music. He became unpoplar with the people around us when he started preaching and brought up Obama....Maybe he should le0ave that pa0rt of the concert home!!!!! Would I go see him again probably not...I will stick to listening to his old albums.

  • Santana bad sound

by stonez on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 2 out of 5

I thought Steve Winwood was great and so was sound. When Santana started it was great but sound stated to get bad. A lot of reverb from bass I think. Usually Xcel has great sound. Really disappointed at the sound quality. Feel I should get my money back.

  • Carlos Santana is a god!!!

by sage1957 on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Carlos' skill as a guitarist is amazing. But, what I admire most about him is his spirituality and love for others. Carlos has melded together an incredible group of mucisians.

  • Carlos was AMAZING!

by MzDaisy1 on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

Carlos was amazing, but the acoustics in the Xcel were horrible. Steve Winwood was OK, but sounded very garbled. Not sure I would ever go back there for a concert, but could definately picture seeing Mr Santana outdoors or a better location.

  • Santana is the "MAN"

by Sissyuggy on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Santana put on a fantastic outgoing performance. Loved the interaction Mr. Santana had with his fans. Both the instrumentals and the singers were a treat to listen to. I have enjoyed Santanas music since i was a teen and was not disappointed at all last night. I would highly reccommend to anyone that they go see and listen to Santana....!!!!

  • Santana and Winwood rock St Paul

by hillsyf on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

A great mix of old and new from both Steve Winwood and Carlos Santana. It is a shame that the crowd seemed like the leftovers from the Lawrence Welk show, during Winwood's set. He brought it all with a mix from the Rascal's to recent solo recordings. the Traffic tunes played were wonderful. Carlos Santana was full of energy from the first note played. He played a great mix of tunes as well from the five decades he has been mastering the most incredible sustain from his guitar. I am always impressed that he actively watches the solos of his bandmates. PEACE CARLOS

  • Spectacular!

by MollyDashJo on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Both Steve Winwood and Carlos Santana blew me away! They are superb musicians, as were their back-up bands. I was very pleased with the set lists of both artists. It was a good mix of hits, songs from every album, and covers. Well worth the money!

Great concert. However leave the political small talk on the tour bus. Just perform.

  • Too frenetic

by DMB299 on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 3 out of 5

The show lacked clarity. With no female back-up voices and only a cursory review through his classic hits, the show was too haphazard. While it is enjoyable at times to hear his mixed riffs, Steve Winwood played riffs that were clearly heard and enjoyed by most. Carlos has a style that is fine for a while, but would tire the concert goer before the finish. The tour just started and some things could be fixed. It would have been nice to get Steve out for a few numbers later in the show. The show was good, but it was not great, even though it could have been much better.

  • Amazing

by OSuziQ on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Carlos Santana has not lost any of the energy and original style from the 60's! The lighting and videos just added to an already awesome performance. Rock on...

  • Santana can still do it with a single note!

by T236 on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Enjoyable and Energetic! WOW! He knows how to bring music ALIVE!

  • Santana

by Uncletex2 on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

I really thought it was a fun party to a small crowd in ST.Paul. He was incredible!! The band played all the biggest hits including my favorite Black magic woman!! The percusion and the horn section generated a loud but clear sound in the Excel Center. I loved the huge video screen on the stage with extra details that promoted the songs. It was the best 10 buck KQRS seats. Thanks!! Santana was one of the best shows in ST.Paul in a very long time. His guitar playing was simply the best!! Sammy Hagar is no Santana!! A really fun night. Bring on STYX, Foreigner and Kansas tonight!! Love Rock N Roll.

  • Santana was awesome!!!!

by Giuseppina on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing concert, much better than the last 2 Santana concerts I attended. Played a lot of his old classic hits as well as his new music. His guitar playing, if you enjoy guitar, was the best I've seen. Played for two straight hours.......totally worth the price! Go see him if you get a chance:)

  • Santana Is Hot!

by JazzLover34 on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

Santana and his band rocked the house last night. It goes without saying that Santana is a legend. He also manages to fill the stage with TOP NOTCH performers. His whole band was TIGHT last night. It's unfortunate that he is touring with Steve Winwood, however. We almost didn't even make the show last night because Mr. Winwood is simply not worth the price of a ticket. We saw him with Clapton a few years back and he was equally disappointing at that show as well.

  • Better with age!

by brklnd on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Some people are like a fine wine and get better with age. Fantastic concert. Carlos Santana still rocks! His band members were the best. Steve Winwood is still rockin too. WELL worth the $.

  • A show of shows!

by JuggleMonkey on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

The show began with a fantastic set by Steve Winwood. As always, Steve brought his "A" game to the stage on both the keys and the guitar. His guitar solos were truely artful. More than just filler sounds, they reminded me of watching a concert violinist playing their heart out. A high energy way to start. After a short break (the set crew had this down) Mr. Carlos Santana took the stage with flair. There is an obvious love pouring off of Santana that can be felt by every member of the audience. His love of the music is shared by his band, made more aparent by the fun they were having. If you see one concert this year, make sure it's Santana with special guest Steve Winwood.

  • Tremendous Show

by JimmyStJames on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Winwood has lost little of his range over the years. He respects even the simple tunes and plays them the way you want to hear them, and remember them. Santana has always been a showman and never disappoints.
