About

Santana in Concert

Few musicians in the history of American popular music inspire the same reverence as Carlos Santana. For more than four decades, he has been one of the music world's most distinctive and exciting guitarists, maintaining his reputation as an artist who continues to revolutionize the form.

Long before listeners knew terms like "fusion" and "world music," Santana was already a master who blended genres and traditions into a sound that was all his own. It's no wonder the young guitarist generated so much excitement as a foremost member of the Bay Area's fertile music community of the late 1960s.

With the release of his debut album Santana and an incendiary set at Woodstock in 1969, Santana established himself as one of the key artists of the era, gaining worldwide fame for his band's combination of Latin, jazz, blues, rock, and R&B. The new star proved his staying power when Santana remained on the Billboard charts and successors Abraxas and Santana III both reached No. 1.

In 1998, Santana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In addition to racking up career sales of more than 100 million records, he earned another spot in history books when Supernatural — the multiplatinum 1999 album that included such hits as "Smooth" and "Maria Maria" — won nine Grammy Awards, tying the record for most wins by a single project.

In 2014, he published his best-selling memoir, The Universal Tone: Bringing My Story to Light. Among his recent musical endeavors has been Santana IV, a thrilling album that saw him reunite with musicians from his band's early-‘70s lineup; and Power of Peace, a deeply soulful collaboration with The Isley Brothers.

Santana returned with more new music in 2019. In Search of Mona Lisa is an EP featuring three instrumentals inspired by the awe he felt the first time he saw Leonardo da Vinci's painting during a visit to the Louvre. Santana continues to inspire the same reaction at shows by the current incarnation of the band that bears his name. His team of first-tier players includes drummer Cindy Blackman Santana (Lenny Kravitz, Pharoah Sanders), bassist Benny Rietveld (Miles Davis, Sheila E.), keyboardist David K. Mathews (Tower of Power, Etta James), and percussionist Karl Perazzo (Mariah Carey, Tito Puente).

Santana on Tour

Grammy Award-winning, legendary artists Carlos Santana and Earth, Wind & Fire embark on a North American tour. A continuation of 2019's Supernatural Now tour for Santana, the Miraculous Supernatural 2020 Tour marks the first time these two powerhouses share the stage in the U.S. The Live Nation-produced outing kicks off June 19th in San Diego and makes stops in Los Angeles, Dallas, New York, Chicago, Toronto, and more before wrapping August 29th in Tampa.

Santana, and his band (which also features Santana's wife, Cindy Blackman Santana) highlight songs from both his Supernatural and Woodstock eras, as well as newer tracks from his 2019 full-length album Africa Speaks and some incredible surprises. Earth, Wind & Fire is one of music's most celebrated musical forces in history with an iconic music catalog that has been the soundtrack of millions of lives around the world.

In 2019, Santana celebrated the 20th anniversary of his revolutionary, multiple Grammy Award-wining album Supernatural, along with the 50th anniversary of his Woodstock performance. Santana's 1999 album Supernatural featured the back-to-back No. 1 singles "Smooth" and "Maria Maria" and sold over 30 million copies worldwide, topping the charts in over a dozen countries and sweeping the 2000 Grammy Awards.

  • Santana was cathartic!

by firstimesantana on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

This was the first time that I saw Santana in concert, and WOW! 12 musicians on stage, a whole rack of guitars and the talent and spirituality of Carlos made for an amazing evening.

  • Santana w/ Steve Winwood

by GearGirly on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

All in all it was a good show. However they didn't have the jumbro tron (Big tv screen so that everyone can see what is happening on stage) on when Steve Winwood played and that meant that most of the crowd couldn't see anyhting. The sound was great but I was seated in the first level and everyone looked like ants. Santana was good but I could have done without his political views.

  • Santana is Amazing!

by jaded234 on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Steve Winwood was good but Santana was fantastic! Played a long time and the music was incredible.

  • Santana Rocked!

by fanofchickenfoot on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Steve Winwood did some of the favorites everyone wants to hear, but I'm not sure his band wanted to play them. Something off there. Santana and the huge back-up group, were fabulous! The music was all familiar and fantastically arranged. Both drum guys were great, the horns were a welcome addition and both singers have wonderful voices. Could have done with a little less "preaching", but all in all it was my favorite Santana show.

  • Santana included too much politics!

by Chichelle on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 2 out of 5

Santana sure knows how to rock on the guitar. The music was awesome, but his rambling on about Obama and the Bible, were a bit too much. I was at the concert to hear some great music, but almost felt like I was at a Democratic convention of some sort.

  • Santana Too Political

by NeutralNancy10 on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 1 out of 5

Santana, and all other musicians, who take advantage of a stage and a mic to talk politics is disgusting. And that's just what he did last night. Santana did not make his fame by campaigning for D.C., he did it with his amazing talent for music. I did not pay to listen to him talk about his opinion. If I wanted to attend a rally for either side, I'd stand outside our capitol. Unfortunately, this has left such a bad taste in my mouth, any of his music I hear on the radio with be tainted with this concert image. Not cool, Santana, not cool.

  • Santana and Winwood-great show

by mamelson on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

The first time seeing Carlos Santana. I took my son who is 23 and we were not sure what to expect and we both were impressed by the show. It was a pretty diverse group of people but you knew who the grew up with them. We had floor seating (last row) which were good seats except when people stood up. But how could you not. As always, you wish they could play every song.

  • Is it just me or were the vocals bordering disco?

by Anonymous on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 3 out of 5

There is no one like Carlos Santana, and he was true to form last night. He's amazing to watch and one of the few lead guitars who knows how to play a melody with interest. In short, he was absolutely compelling. All of the drums and the keyboard were top notch. The absolute best. And everyone of them cute as could be. The bass player was an utter distraction. I might have been a little crabby last night but I wanted to jump up on stage and choke him. He may have done a good job on the bass, I don't know. His goofy 'limelight' expressions and movements were so distracting I had to block him out. The 2 lead vocals had powerful, beautiful voices. I did not, however think they were appropriate for the music. I wanted to tell them to 'de-richen', flatten out. This is Carlos Santana, not Donna Summer. But, being the generally polite human I am, I said nothing.

  • Santana Rocks!

by Jawzy on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome concert, danced the entire time! Sound was fantastic, seats were spectacular, couldnt have asked for a better time!

  • Santana rocked the X!

by HoldYourOwn on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

The Santana concert was amazing! Steve Winwood was marginal. He performance was good, but, because I'm not a follower, I only knew two of his songs. Santana, on the other hand, was simply amazing. He's still git it! If you have the chance, GO!

  • Santana still has the magic!

by VeeMo on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

This man still has the magic and his show was AWESOME!!!! How anyone was able to stay in their seat and not get up and dance is beyond me! So much energy!!!! Every member of his band has a God-given talent and the lead singers were fantastic! A very energetic and fun concert! My second time seeing Santana and I hope it's not another five years before I get the chance again!

  • Carlos is still Hot!

by EProckdad on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

This was a high energy show that just kept on coming. The band is fantastic, and the leader, Carlos Santana is a joy to watch. He plays guitar better than anyone and he does it with great passion. The jam sessions were incredible, as my wife says they don't play as many songs because they play such long version of great songs. Carlos played the old stuff as well as new covers. It was a tribute to rock. Great show!

  • Santana and Steve Winwood were spectacular

by MJRocked on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Winwood was great though he did not say much to the crowd. And even though Santana got a little preachy, it was all good. The instrumentals rocked. So nice to hear that sometimes over all the loud singing and "show". This concert was about musicians and they were truly awesome.

  • Santana Winwood

by thisfieldisapain on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Santana was absolute amazing. So much energy. Amazing guitar playing. two ok, high energy singers, nor Rob Thomas grade but good. highly recommended. Winwood seemed a bit shy but did great. He deserved a better intro than he got (none.) He still has amazing vocal strength but had a few off moment during Back in the High Life Again. He had more fun playing the same venue with Clapton. It probably did not help him and he nursed a bum leg.

  • Santana was worth it!

by RJC74 on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

Santana's show last night was great. Took my son to his first "real concert" and we both had a blast. Excellent sound and visuals, great song selections and execution. Nice mix of youth and experienced concert-goers!

  • Good music, too preachy

by ROACHCLIFF on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

Santana has a very tight band. Let's stick to the music, and not do any preaching between songs.

  • Windwood & Sanatana

by numberonegrandpa on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

I couldn't tell you the name of more than one of Steve windwood's hits, but I recognized everything he played. He was fantastic. Santana was everything I expected. I never knew you could do some of those things with a guitar. Wow!!

  • Santana/Winwood

by lipschitzforever on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 1 out of 5

We were disappointed - the sound quality was the worst ever experienced at Xcel center and we've seen many concerts there. No large video screens for Winwood. Both artists played unrecognized songs. It was as if we paid them to sit in one of their jam sessions. Left early. Glad we didn't pay full price for tickets.

  • Santana too loud

by KillerBee on 7/1/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 2 out of 5

Stevie Winwwod was fantastic... perhaps the best 1 hour of live rock I've ever heard. Santana I ahve seen several times now and I don't need to see him again real soon.... way too loud (painful). He's impressive but.......next time can be in a smaller arena/venue. Also, Santana has become too preachy.......

the man is godly, dammit! He talks, thinks and acts in the highest order. Forget the pope this guys the real thing. Oh, and his music is UNBELIEVABLY SMOKING HOT!
