San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy again in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Western Conference Finals four times.

San Jose Sharks at SAP Center

The San Jose Sharks have made the SAP Center in San Jose their home since 1993. The "Shark Tank," as it is affectionately known, is one of the most raucous buildings in the league. In 2006, the SAP Center, which also hosts concert events year-round in addition to hockey, sold 633,435 tickets to non-sporting events — the most out of any venue in the Western United States and fourth-highest in the world.

    It's the Sharks home opener!!!!

by marwai on 10/9/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San Jose

The opening sequence was great and Sharks performed on the ice to another win in their home opener for the 10th time in a row. High scoring game with a hat trick by Heatley. Venue is the same, except seating capacity has increased by a hundred since they moved the broadcasters way upinto the press levels. The menu is slightly better with more choices of the same type of foods, i.e. Bratwurst hot dogs, buffalo chicken poppers, etc. The Free street fest for opening night is always a bonus.

by KTSSAM on 10/9/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San Jose

1st period the Columbus Blue Jackets started off strong- looked like the Shark's were a tad confused, unfocused. But the Sharks came back in the 2nd period fighting , alive and strong....a few blue jackets took a beating from Shark players....in the 3rd our New Shark Dani Heatley scored an opening game hat trick.......Has that ever happened before!!! the crowd roared!!!! Everyone was on their feet!! Sharks won 6-4 Another great night at the Tank!

    Sharks!

by MirandaD on 9/28/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San Jose

Thank goodness the bay area has an OUTSTANDING sports team! I can't ask for a better sporting event close to home and always provides excellent entertainment and a venue with outstanding food choices. The trades this year were hard to swallow for me, but I look forward to an awesome season!!!

    Hat Tricks Rock

by SharkFan57 on 9/28/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San Jose

It was a very good game; but I have always been of the opinion that you have some rude fans. The usher let a young couple with two kids proceed up the stairs but the jughead sitting five seats in of their row told them they had to wait. They stood there for at least 5 minutes on the stairs before play stopped and he finally got up to let him pass and he seemd to have attitude. He could have let them pass and they would have been in their seats in 30 seconds. What a jerk. Good thing I wasn't sitting closer to him.

    Always exciting at the Tank!

by fandog42 on 9/28/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San Jose

Just saw the sharks play the ducks in the pre-season. I was nervous that it wasn't going to be as fun as the regular season but I was definitly proved wrong. 6-0 victory over the ducks is always fun! So glad I went....can't wait for more games this season. Go Sharks!

    Sharks Shutout Ducks

by SharknLivermore on 9/26/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San Jose

Anytime the Sharks beat the Ducks is great. When it's a Naby shutout with a Douglas Murray Hattrick, it doesn't get any better. Unless, there's more free stuff to be given away.

    great place to watch hockey

by hey345 on 9/26/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San Jose

I really enjoyed this place for watching hockey. the seats are very steep so no one's head is in your way, which is very nice. the fans are very rude and disrespectful, but hey, what can you expect when wearing the opponent's jersey?

    Great Game

by Ksquaredracing on 9/26/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San Jose

Sharks Hockey games are a lot of fun. I don't follow any sports other than motorcycle racing and hockey. The games are a lot of fun and they make a good show of things.

    Sharks were amazing

by AuzzieGirl on 9/26/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San Jose

The game was really exciting! The Sharks were amazing. Imagine, Doug Murray scored a hat trick and we were there live to witness it. AND, we saw it all up close and personal with our glass side seats. Yeah, definitely a great experience.

Pre Season is like a Playoff Preview

by LAWR on 9/21/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San Jose

The Sharks were back on the ice and getting a clear message to the Coyotes that they will continue to dominate. Game was hard hitting with great checking and more than a few fights. Great to see some of the guys trying for spots on the team. Always a pleasure to go. 5 to 4 OT

    Fights were nice

by jermy on 9/21/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San Jose

The first five minutes the crowed was fired up with all of the fights. It continued throughout the game, even into overtime.
