San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy again in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Western Conference Finals four times.

San Jose Sharks at SAP Center

The San Jose Sharks have made the SAP Center in San Jose their home since 1993. The "Shark Tank," as it is affectionately known, is one of the most raucous buildings in the league. In 2006, the SAP Center, which also hosts concert events year-round in addition to hockey, sold 633,435 tickets to non-sporting events — the most out of any venue in the Western United States and fourth-highest in the world.

    It doesn't get any better...

by LadyShark on 11/1/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San Jose

The fact that I love the game and that the San Jose "Sharks" is the only "real" professional team in which San Jose truly can say is theirs, being born here I am biased to the core. Even had we lost (which we certainly did not), I would have given this event 5 stars! THX Ticketmaster for the great seat!

Amazing game. I never miss a Sharks/Avs game, as I have players on both teams. It is difficult to pick a team to root for, but in the end, I always end up picking San Jose because that's where my loyalties lie and always will.

game was amazing, but the traffic was a nightmare

by fcraccdf on 10/31/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San Jose

It was a great game to go to in a fantastic facility, but getting there from the northbay was a nightmare. It didn't help that the Bay Bridge was closed, and anywhere one went to avoid the traffic was a mess. Clowes first goal of the year gives him back to back great performances. I hope it keeps on for him and the team.

    Sharks topple Avalanche

by vacagal on 10/31/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San Jose

The tickets purchased through Ticketmaster were the best seats I've ever had at the Tank. The game was awesome. My vocal cords are strained because sitting in front of us were 4 Avalanche fans. Had to rub in our victory extra loud. How dare they come into our house with their gear on. Go SHARKS!!!

Sharks 3 vs. 1 Avs, incredible match!

by JayEffBee on 10/31/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San Jose

What else can a hockey fan ask for? 47 shots on goal, only 3 allowed makes for an action packed game but not too one-sided. It was a battle on ice! A breakaway goal for one team, a shorthanded goal for the opposition, amazing saves on both ends of the ice equals to adrenaline pumping ALL the time. I think the only thing we didn't get to see was a fight but oh well, the season will be long enough for that! >:)

    NHL at its best!

by Boffster on 10/20/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San Jose

Had an awesome time at the HP Pavillion in San Jose for the Sharks first home game of the new season against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The sell-out crowd created an fantastic atmosphere, & the game itself was fast paced, with plenty of goals! A 6-3 final score to the home side was more than anyone could have wished for! A lovely lady sitting next to us was even nice enough to give me her San Jose jersey as a memento of my trip to the States! Fantastic!

Didn't Used To Be This Bad

by Bob27138 on 10/13/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San Jose

At least one fight broke out on the upper level. Spectators couldn't remain seated for a 20 minute period--view of game blocked a lot. A block of people were even doing the 'wave' in front of us for half a period and during some pretty tense play--missed seeing that too. There didn't used to be a lot of heavy profanity used in the upper level. Not a problem for us, but if you got kids you might want to rethink going.

even though they lost...it was still fun. Bring a thick sweater, they are finally keeping the temp low so the ice quality is good

    Sharks vs Wild

by Sharksfanatic on 10/11/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San Jose

Great game. 1st period the Sharks seemed a bit slow and out of sink but in the 2nd and 3rd periods they rocked! If you never have been to an ice hockey game in person you must go once..you'll be hooked..tv doesn't do it justice.....the speed of the game, their skill and how hard they shoot is realized much more in person..and the Shark tank is an electric place to be..the fans are very knowledgable and LOUD!!..I have been going to hockey games in the Bay Area for 35 yrs since the Oakland Seals....plus both my kids play..love it! Try out the Tank..there isn't a bad seat in the house...even the cheapest seats!!

    Electric Sharks Home Opener!

by thatanne on 10/9/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San Jose

Wow! The seat couldn't have been better, located in row 2 where the action is taking place. The crowd was electric, the players were amazingly fast on the ice and the whole experience was well worth the cost of the ticket.
