  • Samara Joy a Joy, but the venue and preshow, not so much

by Bill on 6/7/25The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - DetroitRating: 3 out of 5

Samara Joy and her band was absolutely fabulous. If it were just her performing, I would've given a 5 star. But the venue and preshow really let down the whole experience. Door opened at 6:30. At 7:30 a comedian did a 30 minute set. A 8 o'clock a local band did a 30 minute set. The band has only two dynamics levels: forte and fortissimo. My ears hurt after the first 5 minutes, and I didn't even get good seats that are close to the stage. The repertoire was thin and repetitive and they tried real hard to stretch a 10 minute set to something that is 30 minutes long. But the worst part of the experience was that after the local band left the stage, the crew took a whole 50 minutes to reset the stage for Samara Joy. That is almost as long as the preshow itself. There is no reason that a show with a 1hr preshow and a 1hr performance should include a 1 hr intermission. Now, it could entirely be possible that there were unforeseen technical problems that caused some delay. But they should've made announcements informing the audience. Just leaving us hanging with zero information is not a good way to host a concert.

  • I had an amazing experience..Samara Joy is a must-see.

by MoniLove on 6/7/25The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

If you are a jazz lover. I mean Ella, Nancy, Betty (Carter) kind of jazz lover. You MUST see THIS woman live. I have been on her band wagon for a few years. Her voice is like velvet. Samara Joy is an amazing songstress. I took my mother to see her last night. I knew I had a winner when my mom closed her eyes and rocked back and forth to the music. That's when you know it's good. Love the new table and chairs too. Makes it more of a VIP experience .

  • Amazing talent

by Sir Derek on 6/7/25The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

I was a fan before and expected good things; but what she brought exceeded my lofty expectations! She was nothing short of incredible. Literally brought tears to my eyes with unparalleled power and control of that beautiful instrument that is her voice. Easily a top 5 gig and I've been to a lot.

  • Wonderful show.

by Mrs I love music on 6/7/25The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

Wonderful show. Wish Ms Joy didn't come out at almost 9:30. And the sound kinda sucked. The orchestra before her we could barely hear the vocals. Kept missing ques for the strings. But other than those 2. It was a good show.

  • Aretha Franklin Amphitheater? Some words of advice!

by Ms Wolf on 6/7/25The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

Very much enjoyed Samara Joy! What a talented performer who is certain to achieve stardom. Everyone in our party agreed we’d most definitely see her again! Very much liked the Aretha Franklin Amphitheater (visiting from Oakland, California!) although there were a few issues: 1) Their website clearly spells out what kind of bags/purses you can bring to the amphitheater- clear bags and wristlets. There are even signs posted on the grass providing visual examples walking up to the theater. Given these rules, I specifically shopped for clear bags, purchasing three bags for each person in my party; this was a complete waste of money! While the Amphitheater rules are clearly spelled out, the Amphitheater does not follow their own rules as 50% of the bags inside the theater were bags not meeting the posted criteria! Basically, if you attend a show at the Aretha Franklin Amphitheater in Detroit, bring any bag you want!! 2) Two rows directly in front of us a gentleman was smoking a cigar. Not sure if the Amphitheater has rules for smoking during the concert but the cigar smoke was obnoxious and many people had to leave their seats. 3) The Amphitheater gets cold at night, dress warmly!! 4) Park is dated, it needs to be updated. Get a grant!

  • incredible but... short set

by musichead89 on 6/7/25The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

Samara did an INCREDIBLE show. Her voice was phenomenal! Feels like she can hit any note on the piano effortlessly but also connect with the material and tell the story. My only critique was the set was very short....maybe 50 minutes and started 2 hours after the start time of 7:30pm. The opening comic started around 7:40 and then the opening act did a set from around 8:15-9:10 and then they changed the set for Samara to start at 9:30. I wish I could've seen just her show because the comic and the opening act had nothing to do with jazz. I wish they would've paired her with an up and coming jazz act. She was incredible though. Next time I'd like to see her by herself ...no opener.

  • Amazing Concert

by Arthur on 6/4/25Orpheum Theater - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5

As a boy in his 20s listening to jazz it’s good to be able to identify a jazz diva also in her 20s. Her voice tells us a story that only few can achieve !

  • Great Concert - Samara Joy is Genuis

    by MarT-Joe on 6/4/25Orpheum Theater - New OrleansRating: 4 out of 5

Absolutely great show!! Loved the atmosphere of the theater and of course....LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the brilliant performance by Ms. Samara Joy!! This young lady is the rebirth of jazz!! If I have one complaint it would be that the seats in the theater could be more comfortable. Never understood why seating has to be so jammed packed, preventing you from being comfortable throughout the entire performance. Nevertheless, it was worth that small discomfort to hear this young goddess do her thing!! Awesome young jazz band as well.

  • Voice like an Angel

by Nancelita on 6/4/25Orpheum Theater - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5

Samara Joy’s voice is unequaled. She just opens her mouth and these beautiful sounds emerge with no effort. She is a definite must see live because she sounds even better than recorded.

  • Wonderful!

The seating was perfect. The entertainment was wonderful!

  • Out of this world!

by Anne on 6/4/25Orpheum Theater - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5

Her voice, her runs, her melody, her skats, are other worldly. Her singing is so extraordinary that one is transcended during her performance, rendered unable to even take a photo under her spell!

  • Venue and talent were great!

by Eric Jarmann on 5/1/25Bardavon 1869 Opera House - PoughkeepsieRating: 5 out of 5

Second time seeing Samara, first time ever in the Bardovan. Fantastic seats and venue staff were very welcoming.

  • A Voice with Incredible Range

by CDJAZZ on 4/30/25Bardavon 1869 Opera House - PoughkeepsieRating: 5 out of 5

Samara Joy did not disappoint! Her vocal range is very impressive. She is a modern day Sarah Vaughan. She is a cordial entertainer with a sweet disposition. Her band is also talented. I'd would definitely see her again.

  • Amazing at 25!

This young woman is incredible. Great voice and arranging singling jazz standards. I look forward to watching her career and musicality mature and evolve. She's fantastic.

  • Stunning Night

by JazzyD on 2/21/25Rating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time seeing her live! I tried for over a year to get tickets to see her anywhere. I was blessed to find out that she was coming back to Morgan State for the holidays. The concert was flawless. Love the mixture of Christmas music and stuff from her other albums. A wonderful night a Jazz. My only downfall was that I didn’t get her to sign my album. The line was so long and some people left before the concert was over just to hope in line. Maybe offer a VIP experience to watch her do sound check, sign albums and even get a picture. I would have definitely paid for that. Overall a wonderful night a jazz.
