About

In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway… and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson’s RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world. And now, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning masterpiece returns to the stage in a vibrant 20th anniversary touring production. A re-imagining of Puccini’s La Bohème, RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters—love.

Rent was a perfect show to enjoy as an early Mother’s Day treat!

Overall it was a good performance but a bit disappointing since it is the farewell tour. One of the main characters was weak and it took away from the performance. There were times when the music was louder than the actor that was singing.

Colorful, fun - fresh face take on one of the best shows ever... farewell!

  • Stunning

I’ve seen this cast three times now. The first in New Orleans, the second and third in DC. They are all truly fantastic with powerhouse voices and presence. I will say I thought the acoustics were better at the Saenger in Nola, but I liked the intimacy of the National Theatre. Both experiences were worth every second.

  • Wow and wow!

After watching the movie Tik Tik Boom, I was blown away by this young man who made broadway history with Rent. I immediately looked to see where it might be playing and found it at the National Theater. It was the most exciting musical I’ve seen! The singing, dancing, gymnastics, costumes and sets were perfect! I loved it! La Boheme is my all time favorite, and I had no idea Rent is to La Boheme, as West Side Story is to Romeo and Juliet. What a production! What a thrill! Thank you for keeping it fresh and real!!

Casting staging ans the performance itself were spot on. Strong actors and musicians. Wish it wasn't a farewell tour.

  • Thee Stars review

by Theee Stars on 3/29/22The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

Pros-, sat In balcony but I still had great view. Performers had great energy, singing, etc Mimi, Angel were ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️! When Angel “died” I felt his loss. Cons- the music was very loud. One woman sat with covered ears and it was even louder after intermission. I couldn’t really get a good grasp of some of scenes.

  • Excellent!

I’ve seen Rent more times than I can count, including with the original cast. This cast was one of the best! My favorite characters are Mimi and Angel, and I think for the success of a show these two have to be on. They were so good. I didn’t want it to be over.

  • Good performance, suboptimal experience

by DC resident on 3/29/22The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 2 out of 5

Seated in orchestra left, row W, on the inside aisle. Newcomers were still being seated 30 minutes into the show. Missed much of the on-stage activity due to blocked view from ushers and late-comers standing in the aisle with their cellphone flashlights on full brightness as they searched for their seats. Ushers were carrying on normal-volume discussions at the back of the hall (so they could hear one another over the performers…?) and patrons near us repeatedly had to ask for them to be quiet. Ushers then blamed the requesting patrons for being noisy. Very frustrating experience. Considered walking out repeatedly.

  • BEST SHOW EVER

this show was everything and then some! The cast is excellent and captures your attention the entire way through. I’m still on a high from Saturday’s show. Highly recommend!

Tremendous show all around!! Hope they plan to do another tour before too long!

  • too loud

by Mimi on 3/28/22The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

The acting and dancing were great, and we loved some of the tunes, but all of us found the music was amplified way too much, making it hard to get most of the words and making the overall experience a bit painful. The bright light that periodically shone right in our eyes also detracted from our enjoyment of what could have been a great show. I think many of the singers had great voices that could have carried better if you had turned down the amplification. Same for the band.

  • Blown Away

  • Great talent and music

by J. D. on 3/25/22Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San AntonioRating: 3 out of 5

The vocals and acting was great. Interesting story line that jumped around but was entertaining. I wasn't excited about the mask mandate or the hypocrisy from theater staff surrounding the issue. Overall, it was enjoyable, just not on my top list to see again.
